KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The numbers are in: more Americans will travel this Thanksgiving than the past 12. The travel organization AAA released its annual holiday travel forecast Thursday. It predicts nearly 51 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles to celebrate the holiday. That's a 3 percent increase from last year, and the highest number since 2005. Travelers can expect to pay more for gasoline than years past, but less for airfare. AAA expects 89 percent of travelers to get to their destination by driving. To avoid getting caught in traffic, experts say you should stay off the roads the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving, especially in the afternoons. That's when normal workweek commuters and travelers are on the road at the same time. "Plan ahead. Try to make sure you're getting out the door early in the morning, if possible. La Jolla, CA- (KGTV) San Diego researchers are looking for people who have recovered from COVID-19 who are willing to donate their blood to be screened for antibodies. Dennis Burton, PhD, is one of the world's leading experts on antibodies. Burton is the chair of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research. His primary focus was developing vaccines for HIV and other infectious diseases, but now his priority is on the novel coronavirus. "What we are looking for is for folks who have diagnosed COVID-19 and have recovered. And preferably, we would like individuals who have recovered some time ago. So, ideally even a month, or two months since they had the illness. That gives time for the antibodies to the virus to have matured and become really good. We're after finding really good antibodies," said Burton. According to Burton, finding patients can be challenging because so many may not realize they were infected." We've heard from quite a few people, mostly, though, they were not actually diagnosed. They may well have had COVID-19, but we're not sure," said Burton. Once they get confirmed patients, the research involves two critical steps."One is we clone the antibodies, and test them, first of all, in test tubes basically and see how well, they do against the virus. Then, later we may try them in some model systems. So, that's what we would do, first of all, and if we can find really good antibodies, then it would be up to pharmaceutical companies to make them in large quantities for use in a therapeutic activity that's the first thing," said Burton. The next step involves using the antibodies to make a vaccine."That's a much, much longer process, but it's one that could be important," said Burton. Burton said there's still a lot to learn."There's also challenges in not knowing the behavior of the virus. We're very careful cause we don't really know too much about it. It's only emerged 3 or 4 months ago," said Burton. Scientists estimate a vaccine could still be at least a year away. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) — A Jamul woman who lost her home to the Valley Fire says her horses were likely saved thanks to fire retardant sprayed on her property. Shelley Brown still can't believe how fast the flames were moving. By 3 p.m. Saturday, the fast-moving flames were bearing down on her home on Lawson Hills Road."Ashes falling down around me. I could hear the fire burning. It was scary," said Brown.She only had time to try and round up her five dogs. One of them ran off. She also owned horses, including three she had just rescued, but she had no trailer. Faced with an impossible decision, she opened up the corral gate and released them."It was the worst. It was the worst. You don’t know if you’re doing the right thing," said Brown, choking back tears.As she drove off, she says the flames were within a few hundred feet of her home. She drove up a hill. She couldn't stop thinking of her horses."Went to the top and cried for a little while," said Brown.The next morning, Brown got back to the area and discovered her two mustangs in a neighbor's yard."So relieved. The search and rescue team helped me get them," said Brown.Not far away, she found the remnants of her home. Her two-story home of 10 years had been destroyed, along with all her belongings."I felt strange and little bit eerie," said Brown.And then, she felt joyful. About 20 feet from the burned home, standing in her yard, were the three rescue horses."I was shocked, so happy. Didn’t know what to expect. They weren’t singed," said Brown.A closer look around the property one possible reason they survived: a sign of a firefight."They were putting retardant around the edge of the property. I can still see it, and they kind of surrounded where my horses were. I’m guessing that’s what saved them," said Brown.A week after the flames swept the area, Brown is beginning to go through the rubble. She is thankful to fire crews."They are amazing. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - A construction worker killed on the UC San Diego campus in La Jolla was remembered Friday by his colleagues. Sergio Cruz, 32, was among five workers injured Thursday morning near Mandler Hall at Muir Lane and Scholars Drive. A 35-foot wall of rebar fell on Cruz, Cal/OSHA said. He later died at the hospital. Cruz and the other injured workers are employees of Clark Construction. The company said Thursday it was conducting an investigation. The San Diego County Building & Construction Trades Council said Cruz had worked in construction for eight years. “He was a skilled tradesman who was well-respected by those working alongside him,” said council spokesperson Carol Kim.The crew was building a mixed-use dorm and classroom building at the time of the accident. 805
