The City of Glendale plans to vote on adding a permanent American flag to the top of Thunderbird Mountain. The Glendale Chamber Military and Veterans Affairs Committee sent a proposal to the city council asking to erect a flag. The committee will also manage it. Thunderbird Mountain falls within a conservation park, which means it is to be left as is. The picnic tables, garbage cans, and signage are all a part of the city's master plan, which is why they are allowed in the park. "We want people to enjoy it but not to disturb the wildlife the plants and not erect any structures in the park either, at least if they're not part of the master plan," said Vice-Mayor Lauren Tolmachoff. She is one of the council members voting to hold off on the change. "Not everybody on the council felt there was a conservation national park because there are signs and roads, and I disagree with that," she said. "You know there are roads in national parks, but they are still to be preserved and protected."No word on when the council will take an official vote, but it will likely be before the end of June.  1153

The death of unarmed black men at the hands of police is not an issue often broached in the epicenter of the technology industry.But Ebele Okobi, Facebook's public policy director for Africa, hopes the death of her 36-year-old brother, Chinedu, can begin to change attitudes in the clubby and largely white world of Silicon Valley.The Morehouse College graduate died earlier this month after being tased during a confrontation with sheriff's deputies near San Francisco."It doesn't matter what school you went to," said Ebele Okobi, 44. "You can go to Harvard. You can work in tech. Every black American will tell you they live in a state of constant anxiety. Every black man will tell you they can work at Google, they can be a senior person at Facebook or Apple but when you're driving and you're a black man, you recognize the danger that you're in."The circumstances surrounding Okobi's death on the afternoon of October 3 remain unclear.The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said deputies encountered Okobi "running in and out of traffic" on a street in Millbrae, a city about 30 miles northwest of Silicon Valley.Okobi "immediately assaulted" a deputy who got out of his vehicle, the statement said. There was a struggle with other deputies who responded.Okobi was taken into custody and transported to a hospital, where he died. A deputy was treated for injuries at a hospital, the sheriff's office said.Tasers were discharged at Okobi three to four times, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaff.One or more deputies fired Tasers. It's unclear how many times Okobi was struck, he said.An autopsy has been completed but investigators were awaiting toxicology reports, which could take four to six weeks, Wagstaff said.The district attorney's office, which investigates officer involved deaths, was still interviewing witnesses and combing through surveillance footage in the area, according to Wagstaff."We have hit a period of great concern regarding Tasers," said Wagstaff, adding that Okobi's death was the county's third since December during law enforcement encounters that involved the high-voltage stun guns.Wagstaff said it's still unclear if the Taser contributed to Okobi's death.The district attorney said his office will release video of the incident by mid-December.Ebele Okobi, whose family has retained an attorney, said prosecutors told her there was drone video of the encounter. "He was someone people connected to all his life. He was a kind person. He loved poetry. He recorded poetry. He recorded rap. He was also very spiritual and deeply religious."She marveled at the support from executives and others at Facebook."There definitely something insular about tech and definitely something insular about Silicon Valley," she said."But my colleagues at Facebook basically organized themselves and just kept telling the story and saying, this is important. Facebook's mission and Facebook's power to do good in the world -- that's the reason I work there. I've never seen this kind of solidarity and this kind of care."Ebele Okobi said that as a black woman she long feared losing a loved one in a violent police encounter.In 2014, after the birth of her son, she moved her family to London."I think it takes a huge amount of emotional courage to raise black children here and I knew that I didn't have it," she said. "I don't have the emotional fortitude to have a black husband and a black son in America. It's not as if I could take everyone I love with me."She said she hopes her brother's death resonates in Silicon Valley's corridors of influence and privilege."People who never thought this could happen to anybody they know, now know that it can," Ebele Okobi said."I hope this becomes a catalyst for more informed conversations" about police encounters with unarmed black men and the mentally ill as well as the use of Tasers on suspects. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say four people have died and 11 others have been hospitalized after they ingested hand sanitizer.In the report, the CDC said the 15 adults, 13 of which were men, were being treated for methanol poisoning, which occurred in New Mexico and Arizona between May and June.The CDC said three people suffered vision problems."Alcohol-based hand sanitizer products should never be ingested," CDC officials said in the report. "In patients with compatible signs and symptoms or after having swallowed hand sanitizer, prompt evaluation for methanol poisoning is required. Health departments in all states should coordinate with poison centers to identify cases of methanol poisoning."As of July 8, four people were still hospitalized, the report stated."Among the four patients who died, three had seizures at the time of admission; initial signs and symptoms were not reported for the fourth patient," the report said.According to the report, the average age was 43, with some of the incidents happening amongst Native Americans. 1076

The coronavirus pandemic, and the resulting lockdowns, travel restrictions and business closures, have caused many people to adjust their living situation either temporarily or permanently. As a result, the number of young adults, those ages 18-to-29, who live with their parents is at an all-time high.The Pew Research Center reports 52 percent of young adults lived with one or both of their parents in July. That translates to about 26,6 million young adults living with parents. The percentage of young adults living with their parents was 47 percent in February, and for most of 2019. The new data was released Friday.The research firm compared the data to available census data, and found the census of 1940, taken toward the end of the Great Depression, reported 48 percent of young adults lived with their parents."The peak may have been higher during the worst of the Great Depression in the 1930s, but there is no data for that period,” researchers stated.The percentage of young adults living with their parents has been above 50 percent since April, slowly climbing. This is the first time the percentage has been above 50 since data became available in 1976.Earlier research from the group found one-in-ten young adults reported relocating temporarily or permanently because of the coronavirus pandemic. More than any other age group.The 18-to-29 age group was hit hard with pandemic-related job losses, service-sector job furloughs and college campus shutdowns.
