SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- On Tuesday, county leaders, along with first responders and behavioral health experts, launched a new program named after a CAL Fire captain who died by suicide in 2017.The Fire Captain Ryan J. Mitchell First Responders Behavioral Health Support Program provides a confidential 24-7 helpline for any local first responder. The helpline is staffed by former and current first responders. The program also connects first responders to local behavioral health resources and substance abuse services.CAL Fire Captain Ryan Mitchell died by suicide on November 7, 2017, at the Interstate 8 Pine Valley bridge.“He loved the acts of fighting fires,” said his widow Denelle Mitchell, in an interview with ABC 10News in October 2019.She also spoke about the difficult days. “What comes with that is a lot of hard work, a lot of hours away from your home and your family and your friends,” she said.Ryan’s father, William Mitchell, became a fire chaplain after his son’s death. While he’s heartbroken his son is no longer with them, he is proud of the legacy he is leaving behind.“Heartbreak and pride are strange bedfellows,” William Mitchell said. “It's hard to process that sometimes. We were always and will continue to be very proud of our son.”Supervisor Nathan Fletcher introduced the policy to create and fund the program in September 2019. He told ABC 10News it cost roughly 0,000 to launch with subsequent costs as the program continues.Fletcher spoke about the trauma that first responders face on the job. “At a time where it feels like no one will sacrifice for anyone, we have a group of individuals who are willing to sacrifice their own safety. They’re willing to sacrifice their own life in an effort to protect us," he said.William Mitchell is one of three Advisory Committee members for the new program. He knows the need is there and encourages all first responders to utilize the new helpline.“The need hit our family like a storm that’s never going to relent,” he said.According to Blue H.E.L.P., 228 current and former law enforcement officers died by suicide in 2019, which is higher than the previous year. The Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance said 82 firefighters, 24 EMS personnel, and one dispatcher have died by suicide so far this year. Those who track the data said the numbers are drastically underreported. The program will be administered by Pathways. The free, confidential helpline is 1-833-YU-FIRST (1-833-983-4778). SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of America's best tiki bars is right here in San Diego, but you'll have to find it to enjoy one of their vibrant drinks.San Diego's False Idol, a hidden tiki bar inside Little Italy's Craft & Commerce, was named to Food Network's list of Best Tiki Bars in America. The speakeasy sports an array of tiki drinks from a traditional Mai Tai to concoctions dubbed Panther's Fang, Doctor Funk, and Hanalei Nights — nearly 40 cocktails in all featuring hundreds of different rums.RELATED: New urban, craft distillery opens in San Diego's East VillageFood Network heralds the expertise of Martin Cate, and the design of artists Bosko Hrnjak and Ignacio “Notch” Gonzalez as high points that transport guests from the secret entrance inside Craft & Commerce into a tropical paradise. If you've never been to the hideaway, CH Projects describes the oasis as an immersive environment complete with an indoor waterfall and flaming volcano, paying tribute to Polynesian elements and the, “'false idols' of mid-century American worship."False Idol is reservation based so you'll have to plan ahead of time. 1129

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One year ago, life forever changed for Navy EOD technician Kenton Stacy and his family. He was in a Syrian hospital clearing IEDs when one exploded, leaving him with a two percent chance of survival. His comrades fought to save his life and did, but Kenton was left paralyzed and unable to talk. He's now receiving care at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla.“We’re all ready for him to come home, it's just been hard juggling being here, being with the kids," said Lindsey Stacy, Kenton's wife. The couple has four children, one with special needs. As they work through Kenton's recovery, the family was hit with yet another unexpected hardship. They've been renting their Chesapeake, VA home for the last two years, not realizing tenants were destroying the house. The carpet and blinds were destroyed as well as much of the hardwood floors. The tenants also smoked cigarettes in the home."I just couldn't believe that people would destroy someone else’s property like that, shocking and it hurt,” said Lindsey. She shared what happened on their Facebook page #StacyStrong. It didn't take long for the community to step up and help make it right, with members of the EOD community spending hours to repair the house.Real estate agent Julie Fish, wife of an EOD tech, also stepped up to help. She's going to help sell the house without taking a commission and has enlisted help for labor and needed repairs. "The EOD community, they really have made it that they're taking care of it and it's one less thing I have to worry about," said Lindsey. "It really hits home that everyone really does just care and sees how much he has sacrificed for our country."Fish says many have already stepped up to help with the house but that they may still need a sliding door and fence. Those wanting to help the Stacy family can also donate to their Go Fund Me page.  1880
