SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A teenager was injured after jumping from an Uber driver's vehicle on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley late Tuesday.The 13-year-old boy, who's from Yucalan, Mexico, was traveling on westbound Interstate 8 in an Uber ordered by his father at about 9:20 p.m., according to San Diego CHP officials. Due to a language barrier with the Uber driver, the teenager decided to jump from the vehicle on the transition ramp to northbound State route 163, CHP officials said.The teen was taken to Rady Children's Hospital with minor injuries, according to San Diego Police.Based on the statements taken by officers, CHP said they are not pursuing the incident as a criminal matter at this time. 707

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A staph infection led to the amputation of a 3-year-old boy's legs weeks after his family arrived in San Diego for a vacation.The Baumkirschners and some friends arrived in their RVs from Arizona in early October and immediately set up camp along Mission Bay.3-year-old Beauden and his two older sisters were part of a group that went for a ride on their bikes."He fell off his bike and scratched his knee. We put on antibacterial spray with a band-aid, and off we went," said his father Brian Baumkirschner.Baumkirschner says Beauden spent the next few hours riding bikes, running around, and at one point, playing in the dirt. Early in the evening, Beauden told him he wasn't feeling well."He said, 'My tummy hurts. Is it bedtime?'" said Baumkirschner.The next morning, Beauden woke up with a fever and eventually started favoring his right leg, where he had a scrape just under his knee. When he became lethargic the next day, his parents rushed him to urgent care, and then Rady Children's Hospital. Brian says his son's right knee was swelling up and turned purple."It started spreading up, his legs, down his leg, in his arms, and down to this hands," said Baumkirschner.Baumkirschner says doctors eventually diagnosed Beauden with a MSSA staph infection. Another type of staph infection, MRSA, is more associated with bacteria in the bloodstream."They kept telling us that there was swelling. All of his extremities are shutting down," said Baumkirschner.Beauden had developed a complication: toxic shock syndrome. His little body started to shut down. Beauden developed sepsis. His kidneys started to fail."It's been every parent’s worst nightmare. You can’t do anything. You’re helpless," said Baumkirschner.There were several leg surgeries to relieve the pressure. Baumkirschner says there were some harrowing days, but his son pulled through. On Monday, doctors had to amputate his legs below the knee.Baumkirschner says he's just grateful is son is alive. He's optimistic Beauden's arms and hands can be saved.Baumkirschner says doctors at Rady Children's Hospital told him similar serious staph infections are rare, and they only a see a few cases every year.Doctors also couldn't pinpoint exactly when or where Beauden contracted the staph bacteria.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with the family with expenses. 2365

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman died and her son was hospitalized after a shooting at a Linda Vista home early Monday morning.According to San Diego police, officers were called to the 2200 block of Crandall Drive at around 3:15 a.m. in response to a report of gunfire in a home.Officers arrived to find a male and female down with gunshot wounds to their upper bodies.The victims were taken to the hospital, but the woman -- identified by police as a 46-year-old Vietnamese female -- died from her injuries.The injured man -- described by police as a 28-year-old Vietnamese male -- is on life support, but police noted that he is not expected to survive his injuries.Police said they were not actively searching for a suspect, as they believe one of the victims was the shooter. 783

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman struck by a hit-and-run driver on a Logan Heights street suffered life-threatening injuries Friday, San Diego Police said. The crash happened about 11 a.m. in the 700 block of Cesar Chavez Parkway at Kearney Avenue. A white Ford F-150 pickup truck was driving west and struck a woman also heading west on the north sidewalk, police said. The truck made a right turn onto Kearney Avenue and struck the woman. The driver did not stop to help the woman and continued north on Kearney Avenue, according to investigators. The 52-year-old victim suffered major head trauma. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An ash-filled stolen trailer in Miramar contained heartbreak for more than 100 military families in the form of hand-carved model aircraft burned and damaged. Many of the coveted items are simply too far gone from the damages."They are hand-carved, hand-painted and personalized," said John Pineda, who owns Squadron Toys.He says his model aircraft are ordered by service members and veterans - and their loved ones to commemorate service. Many of them are gifts for a retirement or Christmas.Those gifts disappeared overnight, in minutes."We are heartbroken," said Pineda. He showed 10News the surveillance video.Just past 1 a.m. on Nov. 3, a U-Haul truck drives into the parking lot. Five minutes later, you can see it again, this time hauling Pineda's trailer, filled with more than a hundred model aircraft to be shipped out the next morning.The discovery of his trailer missing was followed a week later by a call from the CHP.The trailer was found on fire on a street in Vista. He towed it back Thursday.Pineda looked in the trailer and found about 60 of the models were missing. There were also burned model planes and helicopters.
