LA MESA (CNS) - The family of a grandmother who was struck in the face by a law enforcement projectile, suffering severe injuries, during a weekend police protest in La Mesa called Tuesday for the officer involved to be publicly identified, fired and charged with attempted murder.Cellphone video that has gone viral shows 59-year-old Leslie Furcron lying on the ground, blood streaming down her face, amid shouting demonstrators attending the Saturday evening protest against police brutality.Furcron remains hospitalized in an intensive-care unit in a medically induced coma and may lose one of her eyes, according to her family and their attorney. They held a news conference outside La Mesa City Hall to demand that the officer who fired the projectile, which struck her in the forehead, be held accountable.Dante Pride, an attorney representing the family, said he had reviewed dozens of videos and spoken with scores of people present at the protest outside La Mesa police headquarters and has seen no evidence that Furcron was violent or did anything to justify being shot.Furcron was holding up her cellphone, recording the protest, when an officer opened fire, Pride said. The other demonstrators also were being peaceful and received no warning from law enforcement before "the tear gas came and the bullets rained down," he said.Pride said he believes the involved officer purposely aimed at Furcron's head, in contradiction of the LMPD's rules regarding use of force, which he said hold that projectiles be aimed below the waist.It's uncertain whether the officer who opened fire was with the La Mesa Police Department or another agency, though Pride said he believes it was an LMPD officer.A representative of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said the regional agency had no role in the shooting."It did not involve a sheriff's deputy," sheriff's public-affairs Lt. Ricardo Lopez said Tuesday afternoon.A La Mesa police spokesman did not return a telephone call seeking comment.Two of Furcron's sons, Ahmad and Azim, described their mother as a law- abiding La Mesa resident. "Whoever that was needs to stand and (be) held accountable for it. That's attempted murder. My mom was shot between the eyes, 59 years old, protesting. LAKE CLARKE SHORES, Fla. — A Florida family is securing their home after two of their cats were shot in the back with a pellet gun, forcing them to be euthanized. Police are looking for whoever is responsible. First, it was Peanut, a black kitten, and then Fritz, a 4-year-old white and orange cat back in March and April, respectively.They came home to their owner, Debbie Hiatt, with a wound in their back and their hind legs dragging back in the spring. “The biggest thing for me was just wanting to find someplace else to live. Because I don’t trust anyone,” Hiatt said in an interview. In X-rays, you can see a single pellet lodged in each one of their spines A veterinarian would have no choice but to put them down. Peanut was the hardest. “His front was so full of life but nothing in the back. Even Fritz was hard, but the baby? It was a lot harder with the baby,” Hiatt said. Since then, taking no chances, she and her husband John had cameras installed around their home and secured their back porch for their remaining cats and dogs. She says six other cats have inexplicably gone missing over the last year. “It’s not fair to the animals. They don’t know. And what they could have done is come to me and said 'hey, keep your animals out of my yard.' And then at that point in time, we would have done this probably a lot sooner. And then I would have still have Peanut. And Fritz,” she said. Lake Clark Shores police say they have identified a person of interest but haven’t made an arrest yet.“Catch the person. (KGTV) - Researchers at UC San Diego have found a way to improve radar technology that can make self-driving cars safer."Our vision is to make self-driving cars much more safer than how we humans drive," says Dinesh Bharadia, an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC San Diego.Bharadia led a team of researchers working on ways to help autonomous vehicles see in bad weather.Currently, he says, self-driving cars rely on LiDAR, a light-based radar system. But it's performance is limited because it uses a low frequency that reflects in bad weather.Bharadia says his team tested wireless radar, which has a higher frequency wavelength and found it can rain and fog.However, the wireless radar's sight range is limited. So Bharadia's team built a system where five wireless radars work together to create a more full "view" of the road."From each radar's vantage point, you see something different," says Bharadia. "Those different things, observed from five different radars, gives you much more detailed aspect ratio of another car (on the road)."Bharadia says the combination of all five radars helps create a 3-D image of other objects on the road. That helps the car's self-driving system figure out how to avoid them."You need to know the exact aspect ratio of the other cars on the road," he says. "Only then can you drive around them if you need to."Bharadia says carmakers like Toyota and Honda have been helping with the research and development. He thinks this new technology could be on the road within 2-3 years."Radars are already out there," he says. (KGTV) -- Local cannabis shops are sounding the alarm, saying higher state tax rates set to take effect next year will drive more customers to the black market.Starting January 1, the state will change the way it calculates the excise tax on all marijuana products, effectively raising the rate by 12.5 percent.
