Edwards, 40, the founder of Social Savvy Marketing, admitted to submitting fake tax records and payroll information to receive a loan through the Paycheck Protection Program.The U.S. Attorney's Office said that in April and May, she applied for "tens of thousands of dollars of PPP loans" with three financial institutions, claiming in applications that Social Savvy Marketing had two employees who earned annual salaries of ,000 and ,000, when the company actually had no employees.Edwards provided fake addresses, Social Security numbers and W-2 forms for the nonexistent employees, according to prosecutors, who said that upon being rejected for a loan, she claimed, "This is a lifeline for my employees and my business and we won't survive without it."She was able to obtain a ,583 PPP loan, but will have to repay the entire amount as part of the plea agreement.Edwards entered her plea Tuesday in San Diego federal court and is slated to be sentenced Nov. 18. The charge of making false statements to the Small Business Administration carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment and a ,000 fine, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office."The PPP is designed to help struggling businesses meet legitimate payroll obligations, not to enrich sole proprietors engaging in outright fraud," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A shooting near Willie Henderson Sports Complex left a man wounded Friday.The 40-year-old victim was sitting in his vehicle in the 900 block of South 45th Street in Mountain View shortly before noon when a "large" man approached and shot him several times in the upper body, then ran off, according to San Diego police.Medics took the victim to a hospital for treatment of non-life- threatening wounds, Officer Tony Martinez said.It was unclear if the two men knew each other, and the motive for the shooting was unknown. 547

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A prominent local civil rights leader called on the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Monday to fire a deputy who allegedly shared a "lewd and racist and vile" altered photograph of George Floyd taken from the viral video of the Minnesota man's death in police custody.The doctored image showed a nude male "porn star" kneeling on Floyd in place of Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin, who kept his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes as the detainee repeatedly protested that he could not breathe, according to NAACP San Diego Branch President Francine Maxwell. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con and repeat DUI offender who was drunk when he drove on the shoulder of the freeway near Tierrasanta, striking and killing a tow-truck operator tending to a disabled trash truck, was sentenced Friday to 15 years to life in prison plus 10 years.Michael Gilbert Gray, 50, pleaded guilty in August to second-degree murder and admitted two serious felony priors, including a domestic violence conviction for hitting his wife and rupturing her eardrum.Charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and leaving the scene of the Feb. 23, 2017, collision that killed 55-year-old Fred Griffith were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.Griffith's sister, Danelle Ragsdale, said in a letter to the court that her brother -- a single father to three boys -- was "needlessly ripped from all of us."Ragsdale said Griffith and his three sons -- ages 15, 18, and 21 -- were "inseparable.""He (Fred) worked hard for the boys so they would have a good life," the victim's sister said in the letter read in court by Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright. "Fred was a ship in the night who would help you find your way to safety."Griffith's friend, Randall Resch, wrote in a letter that the victim was a "gentle giant" and one of the best heavy-duty tow-truck operators in San Diego County."Fred touched the hearts of everyone who knew him," his friend said. "To me, Fred died a hero's death."Before he was sentenced, Gray apologized to the victim's family and said he took full responsibility for Griffith's death.Witnesses testified during a preliminary hearing last year that they saw Gray's Ford Expedition swerve onto the shoulder of eastbound state Route 52 and narrowly miss a large disabled commercial trash truck before striking Griffith, who was standing outside his tow truck in front of the trash truck.Off-duty sheriff's Detective Mark Palmer testified that he activated his lights and siren in his vehicle and followed Gray's SUV before pulling him over a short distance down the highway.The defendant -- who had a half-empty bottle of vodka in his car -- was still showing signs of intoxication three hours after the crash, said Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright. Authorities said Gray's blood-alcohol content was .27 percent -- more than three times the legal limit -- at the time of the accident. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A masked man wielding an aluminum baseball bat robbed a Park West-area bank Tuesday.The thief confronted a teller at the Union Bank branch office in the 300 block of Laurel Street and demanded cash about 12:15 p.m., according to the FBI.After the clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of money, the bandit left the bank and fled the area in a red car, San Diego police reported.The robber was described as a roughly 6-foot-tall, 20- to 30-year-old black man wearing black pants, a blue long-sleeved shirt, tennis shoes, gloves and a white "theater style" mask, according to the FBI. 610
