OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- The beach may still be Oceanside’s biggest draw, but increasingly, people are coming for the beer.With seven breweries, several tap rooms and San Diego’s first meadery, Oceanside is earning a reputation among those looking for a pint.“They’ve brought a really interesting liveliness to Oceanside,” said the city’s economic development manager, Michelle Geller.Geller estimates Oceanside’s beer businesses have created 50 to 75 jobs, along with other economic benefits.LIFE IN OCEANSIDE:From 'Ocean Side' to region's third-largest city5 places to spend the day in Oceanside“It tends to give way to businesses that want to have their offices in the downtown,” she said. “Employees just like that creative culture of craft beer.”The oldest active brewery in Oceanside is Breakwater Brewing, the first to take up residence along Coast Highway. It opened in 2008 during the teeth of the Great Recession, when downtown had a different feel.“Lot of crime,” said co-owner Shannon Sager. “We had people grabbing money. Our tip jar had like in it once, people ran in, grabbed it and ran out. We started gluing it to the table. That doesn’t happen anymore.”As the downtown landscape shifted, more breweries opened nearby.“The next thing you know, it started taking off,” Sager said.Bagby Beer Company, Belching Beaver, Legacy Brewing, Northern Pine Brewing, Oceanside Brewing Company and Golden Coast Mead now round out Oceanside’s craft scene. At Inside the Five Brewery near the Michigan/Ohio line, patrons are divided heading into the debate. "I am for Biden," Marge Mizer, said. "I like an upfront person that’s going to tell me the truth," Mizer said. Meanwhile David Bartlett says he wants Trump to send a message. (KGTV) - Two North County bars have voluntarily closed down because of positive COVID tests.Last Friday, Kate Dionisio went to dinner with her husband at Masters Kitchen and Cocktail."We had dinner and one drink, and stayed about an hour," said Dionisio.A week later, Dinoisio, who has an underlying health condition, says the night of celebration has sparked anxiety."Panic. Scary. We've been so careful with masks and taking precautions, but this felt out of my control," said Dionisio.On Thursday, on the bar's Facebook page, a message announced a recent positive coronavirus test and a voluntary closure for two weeks to best ensure everyone's "health and safety." The bar's owner says an employee was tested on Monday, with the positive result coming on Wednesday. The next day, the same day of the Masters post on Facebook, there was a similar message put up by Mission Avenue Bar and Grill, just a few blocks away. In this case, two employees tested positive. Their post stressed that safety is "our highest priority." It also promised a sanitization by a professional cleaning company. Their reopening date is to be determined, only after every returning staff member has tested negative. The owner of Masters Kitchen and Cocktail says there is no overlap in staff between the bars, but in their industry in Oceanside, "everyone knows everyone."The two bars are just a handful of local bars and restaurants to disclose positive COVID-19 tests. On their Facebook pages, customers weighed in and many lauded the transparency."It shows they respect their customers and care about the community," said Dionisio.In the end, Dionisio contacted the bar and found out the employee wasn't working the night she was there. 1746

(KGTV) - Students at El Camino High School have a chance to put their stamp on pop culture.They're designing shoes for the Vans Custom Culture competition.El Camino High School is one of just 500 schools in the country to be picked for the contest. More than 200 students submitted designs at the school, but only two will advance to the national competition.Sophomore Isiah Duran is one of the students whose design was chosen."I basically did what I thought was Oceanside," he says. "The pier, sunsets, the beach."The students could make designs based on two categories, "Local Flavor" and "Off the Wall.""It resonates with the younger culture," says El Camino Art Teacher Diego De La Luz. "It resonates with activities that range from biking to skateboarding and really just the Southern California vibe which Oceanside is all about."The winner will receive ,000 for their school's art department. Vans will also endow a scholarship for a student from the winning school to attend the Laguna Art Institute.De La Luz says the students will decide how to spend the money at the school if they win. He adds that ,000 would provide a big boost to the art department, especially as districts tighten their budgets and art programs are often among the first to be cut."Having that opportunity for the cash prize would cushion some of our artistic ambitions for the students," says De La Luz.Students say it's pretty amazing to try and design for a company they already love."I'm wearing Vans right now," says Junior Aymee Locke.
