SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A car being pursued by the California Highway Patrol crashed in the Carmel Valley area early Friday morning.Around 12 a.m., CHP officers attempted to pull over a 2020 Toyota Camry for speeding on southbound Interstate5 near Del Mar Heights Road, but the driver refused to stop.Officers say the driver was traveling at 135 mph.The car tried to exit on Carmel Valley Road, but when the driver attempted to get back on the freeway, she lost control on the on-ramp and crashed.Officers took six women into custody from the car, including the driver.It's unclear why they chose to flee from CHP officers.Paramedics later responded to evaluate minor injuries. 681

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of Black student leaders from Poway Unified School District schools met last week with administrators, principals and counselors to discuss ways to address issues of racism and inequality in the district.The students are the presidents of the Black Student Unions at each of PUSD's five high schools.It was the first meeting since the student leaders sent an email asking to see changes in the district to improve the lives of students of color."Making PUSD not just not racist but transparently anti-racist," said Jade Thompson, president of the BSU at Rancho Bernardo High School.Thompason helped write the email, which also talked about the recently created Instagram account "Black in PUSD,” which anonymously details students' experiences with racism."We just think it was a great way to open up people's eyes cause people like to say not in this community," said Thompson.Superintendent Dr. Kim Phelps agrees, saying, "To hold people accountable, including the district and our teachers and everybody ... I'm proud of our students for doing that.”Phelps and Thompson both described the meeting as productive and positive.Among the issues discussed were student education and assemblies addressing racism. The district is also committing to more diverse hiring and curriculum."It's upon us to try to do better; we have a lot of work to do and we want to do better so it’s a growing and learning opportunity for all of us," said Phelps.The students and administrators also talked about the consequences for racism-related incidents.Students said they'd like to see a form of restorative justice instead of just punishment.Although both students and staff agree there's a lot more to be done, they also say the first step is recognizing the problem and starting the conversation."I have a lot of hope for the future of this year and the years to come," said Thompson. 1906

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family killed in a Logan Heights house fire in October was laid to rest Friday.Jose Antonio Romero Mayo, 44, Nicolasa Mayo-Cortes, 46, and daughter Iris, 21, all died from their injuries following the Oct. 13 fire.Funeral services were held at Saint Anthony of Padua in National City Friday morning.RELATED: Family's oldest son charged in Logan Heights house fire deathsTwo other surviving family members, Wendy and Angel, were out of the hospital and in attendance.After the church service, a funeral procession drove by the house the family once called home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Carmel Valley family who moved from Parkland, Florida is upset after learning two Parkland victims died of apparent suicides.Erin George says these suicides in her hometown are re-opening old wounds. It has her wondering how many more lives will be lost due to the senseless tragedy. She said, “I was numb. I just thought when does the loss of life stop from this.”Erin’s daughter Lauren lost a friend in the shootings. She worries about the emotional impact the shootings will have on her daughter.Suicide prevention experts say the best thing you can do is look for warning signs and talk to your teenagers. Simply ask them if they have thought about suicide. They say the best time to talk about it is when they are not depressed. Warning signs include a drastic change in behavior or withdrawing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A female sea lion Monday wandered onto the streets of Point Loma, prompting spectators to gather and springing a rescue team into action.According to a passerby, the sea lion was spotted in the middle of Garrison Street around 4 p.m.According to crews, the sea lion would’ve had to cross Rosecrans Street to get to Garrison. Rescuers from SeaWorld responded to the scene, adding that the sea lion appears health and at a normal body weight, but they’ll need to further examine her to learn more.SeaWorld also said it’s unusual for a sea lion to wander that far away from the bay, but the animals have been found on porches, inside hotels and on driveways. 683
