CLEVELAND — The morning of Nov. 23 started out like any other for Amanda Zupancic. She’s a special education teacher in Cleveland. Around 11 a.m. that morning, in what would be her 3rd period class, she was in session with a middle school student and his mom on Zoom in the upstairs office of her west Cleveland home.She was suddenly interrupted with a loud noise.“I heard a glass-shattering crash downstairs,” she said. “I was like, 'hold on, I think someone is breaking into my house, just joking.' I didn’t think anyone would be breaking into my house in the middle of the day,” she said.But that is exactly what was happening.“There was a man walking though my baby gate with a knife in his hand walking upstairs,” said Zupancic. “He started threatening me, yelling at me, calling me names. He grabbed me upstairs into my bedroom.”The man began rummaging through her things, all the while Zupancic’s student and his family were still on that Zoom call listening from Lake County.In the 911 call, the student’s dad tried to explain the situation. “The teacher that teaches my son, somebody broke into her house we saw it on the Zoom,” said the student’s dad to a Lake County dispatcher.As the robber frantically searched for valuables, the dad gave as much detail to the dispatcher as he could.“I guess she heard the man say, ‘Get on the floor. I’m going to cut your f-ing throat,’” he told the dispatcher.Zupancic told the man he could have her car keys but they were downstairs. He agreed she could go and get them. She said, instead of getting the keys, she let her two dogs out.“When I reached for my keys, instead I opened the gate and I have a German shepherd and a Great Dane-boxer mix. So the German Shepherd stood between myself and this guy, and the Great Dane Boxer mix went at him,” she said.It gave her enough time to think.“I just grabbed a pair of scissors and I chased him to the front door,” she said.She continued to chase him down her street.“I started chasing him with this pair of scissors, in my house shoes, down the street, yelling 'help me, help me, this guy robbed me,'” she said.Zupancic said a local contractor working on a house in her neighborhood saw the encounter and tackled the man to the ground and detained him until Cleveland police arrived.When they got there, they arrested Charles Derosett.Derosett is charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault as well as other charges. He is a convicted felon, previously serving time behind bars for aggravated robbery.Zupancic is still shaken up. CLAREMONT, Calif. -- A family wants the FBI to get involved after their son was stabbed to death in Mexico, according to KABC.Their son was in Mexico celebrating a friend’s birthday when he was killed, and now his family believes the Mexican government is trying to cover up the murder. Taylor Meyer left for Mexico for his friend’s 30th birthday.Photos show the 27-year-old having a good time with his friend’s in Playa Del Carmen. On Friday, his parents got a call informing them their youngest son had been murdered. They first thought it was a cruel hoax, but later discovered it was real.Kris and Krista Meyer say their son was stabbed to death and that a witness told police that three people carried out the attack, taking his wallet, shoes, watch and iPhone. The couple is now searching for answers and wants the FBI to investigate.They say that Mexican authorities are trying to cover up the murder so not to scare tourists away. Sunday, 200 of Meyer’s friends gathered at Hermosa Beach for a candlelight vigil to remember the fun, loving man who brought so many of them together. 1097

Commercial real estate leader Steve Schwab is looking to sign tenants to leases at a new development in downtown Denver but he’s running into troubles linked to the pandemic.“COVID has a had a major effect, probably the most major effect in the sales business,” he said.Schwab, a managing principal at Cushman & Wakefield, says COVID-19 has had a major impact on commercial real estate in a short amount of time.“Between the first quarter and the second quarter, we saw office investments sales decrease by about 72%,” he said.Schwab says unemployment, more people working from home and social distancing are impacting commercial real estate sectors like shopping centers, hotels, retail and office spaces.He says that the road to recovery will be very challenging, something other industry experts agree with.“The restaurants, the gyms, the bowling alleys, those are going to struggle over the next 12-18 months until we get back to full physical occupancy,” said Spencer Levy, chairman at CBRE.Levy says high inventory combined with low interest rates could attract foreign investors to American commercial real estate, something he welcomes with open arms.“Foreign money isn’t just cash. It brings everything with it. It brings jobs, it brings foreign students, it brings people that buy retail,” he said.But will foreign investment bring more people back inside massive buildings?Levy compares what today's commercial real estate industry needs to rebound to that of 9/11.“We had a period of time where people were tragically afraid to be back in the cities, afraid to go back into tall buildings.
