CHULA VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) — More and more San Diegans are rushing to get tested for COVID-19, but the wait times at some South Bay locations are hours long.Cars wrapped around the South Chula Vista Library as hundreds of people are waited to be tested for the coronavirus."Testing is just something that we all need to be doing regularly right now," Nancy Maldonado, CEO of the Chicano Federation, said.Recently, the lines and wait times at the county's free testing sites have been getting longer, especially in the South Bay. Maldonado says this area is home to many Hispanic or Latino San Diegans who have front line jobs, with greater exposure to the virus."The other reason is the multi-generational housing, and the lack of housing here in San Diego," Maldonado explained.At its peak, Hispanic and Latinos made up 63% of the County's infection rate, despite only being 34% of the population. Most recent statistics show that number dropped to 57.7%."It's still high, and it's still alarming, but we have seen that number start to come down," Maldonado said.It's thanks to community organizations like the Chicano Foundation and the San Diego Latino Health Coalition that take away the stigma of testing. They offer resources for those who test positive, support for families, and even quarantine locations."There are resources available, so they don't have to stay within that household," Maldonado said.But there are still some obstacles. There have been reports of many people going to Aquatica, not knowing about the "appointment only" system. So they are being turned away."A lot of the county sites are switching to 'appointment only,' but that message isn't getting out fast enough," Maldonado said.That is why it is essential to check online before leaving your home, although making appointments is always recommended."It's up to all of us to make sacrifices right now and do everything we can to bring down this infection rate so we can reopen and so our small businesses don't have to keep suffering," Maldonado said.The county is now working with community partners to set up more testing locations where there is the greatest need. 2159

CINCINNATI -- A Lebanon Correctional Institution inmate was sentenced to three years in federal prison for mailing threatening letters to President Donald Trump and other federal officials, authorities announced Monday.Rodney D. Cydrus, 48, mailed a total of five letters in January 2017 to the FBI and Federal Public Defender's Office threatening to injure them, federal judges and the president, according to court documents.In one letter, Cydrus wrote that he wanted to "go out with a bang" by killing or kidnapping a federal agent."As soon as I get out I’m going to get everybody I can in your office…Die Die Die…I promise my word I’ll get at least 30 of you before you kill me," one letter states.One letter also included a powder that turned out to be Cydrus' own medication, causing a HAZMAT response. "The federal officials whom Cydrus targeted have hard enough jobs as it is," U.S. Attorney Benjamin Glassman said in a news release. "Disrupting operations and creating an atmosphere of fear is a serious offense, and it’s important to deter this kind of intimidation campaign."Cydrus was an inmate at Lebanon Correctional Institution in Warren County at the time he sent the letters.A federal grand jury indicted Cydrus in February 2017. He pleaded guilty in January to one count of mailing threatening communications. He had faced up to 10 years in prison. 1389

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- When you ask Chula Vista City councilman Steve Padilla what he learned during 2020, he'll say it was to appreciate the little things in life. Things like valuing every moment and never take time for granted. ABC 10News caught up with Padilla as part of our Positively San Diego, A Season of Hope series. Padilla beat COVID-19 after spending weeks in the ICU, 11 days on a ventilator. Padilla says the love and support of the community has been overwhelming. After beating COVID-19 and weeks of recovery, Padilla got back to work as city councilman, while also campaigning for reelection. He won his reelection by a landslide. The councilman says he is incredibly thankful for the healthcare workers still battling this pandemic, especially the ones that saved his life. While he says he's looking forward to the new year and being able to hug people he hasn't hugged in months, he recognizes there is still so much work to be done before the pandemic is under control. 1008

CINCINNATI — Six months after his son's suicide, a sobbing Ronald Hummons sped down Interstate 71 with no hope left except that a well-placed pothole might launch him through the windshield of his car and put an end to his half-year of grief. Only the thought of his remaining loved ones finally slowed him down.It also gave him an idea."I decided, you know, what's the best way to try to get over a death situation is to put life into it," he said.That's when he started working on his app: Strike-Back, a tool meant to help people experiencing suicidal feelings save their own lives.Both Hummons men had struggled with depression and thoughts of suicide throughout their lives. Far from pushing his father to speak openly about his inner turmoil, the younger's death left Ronald Hummons paralyzed and afraid."When you talk about a parent who lost their child to suicide, it's like, ‘What did you do wrong?'" Hummons said. "Judgement. We're placed on a judgement list."Hummons' son was TrePierre Hummons, the man responsible for the shooting death of Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim on June 19, 2015.That judgment, or the fear of it, shamed him into a silence he now wants to break for everyone who has seriously considered ending his or her own life. Strike-Back, which is compatible with iOS devices, allows its users to put pictures of their loved ones in a designated folder and add the contact information of anyone they believe would help them in a crisis to another.If that moment ever arrives, users can press a button in the app to send a message and their location to those trusted contacts."You've got a better chance of saving my life by knowing exactly where I'm located at than not knowing," Hummons said.In the meantime, users can look at their loved ones to remember what they would be leaving behind if they acted on their feelings. It worked for Hummons; he believes it can work for others speeding down their own dark roads."I'm going to be a little reluctant to do something because I know it'll cause them just as much harm," he said. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police arrested a man suspected in the death of a person after a fight erupted at a party in Chula Vista.According to Chula Vista police, 20-year-old Raymundo Ochoa-Juarez was arrested on suspicion of killing 20-year-old Deandre Bethel after a brawl in the 400 block of East Oxford on the evening of Oct. 30.Ochoa-Juarez was arrested with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals' San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force.Police did not immediately release details on the case, including the victim's cause of death.A second victim, a 21-year-old, is currently undergoing treatment and is expected to survive, police say.The Chula Vista Police Department is urging anyone with information to contact them or call the San Diego Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888)580-8477. 809
