Just two years later, that number was at 37 states and the District of Columbia. Then on June 26, 2015, same-sex marriage became legal across the country in Obergefell v. Hodges.“The Constitution promises liberty to all within its reach, a liberty that includes certain specific rights that allow persons, within a lawful realm, to define and express their identity. The petitioners in these cases seek to find that liberty by marrying someone of the same sex and having their marriages deemed lawful on the same terms and conditions as marriages between persons of the opposite sex,” the ruling states.Articles written at the time of the ruling wondered if June 26 would become a national holiday to mark the significance of the decisions on this day.In 2017, on June 26, the Supreme Court ruled same-sex couples should both be listed on birth certificates in Pavan v Smith. Arkansas at the time said only biological parents could be listed on birth certificates.Already in 2020, the justices have ruled that a bar on sex discrimination in the workplace extends to gay, lesbian and transgender workers. 2426

During that same time span, Trump drew a total of 13.5 million viewers during his hour-long event on NBC. These numbers include ratings for both network and cable audiences, who could have watched the president's event on CNBC or MSNBC. Biden's event was only broadcast on ABC on TV. Trump and Biden were originally slated to appear together for a town hall-style debate. However, the Commission on Presidential Debates said earlier this month that the event would take place virtually following Trump's COVID-19 diagnosis. Trump then dropped out, saying he wouldn't "waste his time" with a virtual debate.Biden then scheduled his town hall event with ABC News. Bush said Sunday that he has extended congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on winning the 2020 presidential election, breaking with prominent members of his party in the process.In a statement released by the George W. Bush Presidential Center, the 43rd president said he is optimistic that Biden will help bring the country together."Though we have political differences, I know Joe Biden to be a good man, who has won his opportunity to lead and unify our country," Bush said in a statement. "The President-elect reiterated that while he ran as a Democrat, he will govern for all Americans. I offered him the same thing I offered Presidents Trump and Obama: my prayers for his success, and my pledge to help in any way I can."Bush also acknowledged President Donald Trump's intent to challenge the election results on allegations of massive voter fraud, which thus far have proven to be baseless."President Trump has the right to request recounts and pursue legal challenges, and any unresolved issues will be properly adjudicated," Bush said. "The American people can have confidence that this election was fundamentally fair, its integrity will be upheld, and its outcome is clear."By issuing congratulations to Biden, Bush — the only former Republican president currently living — has broken with the majority of top Republicans currently serving in government. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy have not yet publicly acknowledged Biden as President-elect, and several other prominent Republicans have publicly refused to declare Biden the victor despite projections from most major media outlets.Sen.
