A family in the San Francisco area received a letter from their son’s middle school recently threatening the child’s arrest for missing 90 minutes of Zoom class, according to local media.“This is our fourth child going through this middle school and out of the blue, we got a letter,” Mark Mastrov told KGO.The letter alleges Mastrov’s son, age 12, missed three 30-minute Zoom sessions as unexcused absences. The district says that makes the boy a truant of the state and makes him “subject to arrest” or a fine."He can become a truant of the state and he could be arrested. I said, ‘Are you going to come and try to arrest my son at my home, or try to fine me for not getting him to his Zoom class perfect, on time, everyday?," Mastrov told KGO.Mastrov’s son spends up to seven hours a day attending virtual school.The middle school told KGO the letter was the result of new state guidelines passed this fall in California that require districts to keep a closer eye on student attendance.“The letter is part of our responsibility to the state for our student attendance review boards. As always, the schools have a responsibility to ensure students are engaged and learning,” Principal Betsy Balmat told KGO.Mastrov says he has heard from other parents in the district who have received similar letters. A company is promising to pay San Diegans cash for cutting their energy use when demand is at its peak.The payouts can add to hundreds of dollars per year.But getting that cash means following some very specific instructions, and isn't as simple as turning off your air conditioning. The company is called OhmConnect, which has a contract with San Diego Gas & Electric.San Diegans who sign up let OhmConnect tap into their smart meters. They will then get a text message alerting them to a specific hour when they should cut their energy use - turn off air conditioning, lights, chargers, surge protectors, and avoid opening the fridge and freezer. OhmConnect suggests people do something outside during that time. "Everyone is looking to save a buck, so I was like why not, times are tough?" said Patrick Copley, of Serra Mesa, who signed up Monday. Curtis Tongue, a spokesman for OhmConnect, said the company has ramped up its advertising over the past few months. He said OhmConnect sells the reduced energy use to SDG&E, takes a cut, and passes on the rest to the participant in terms of points. Each point is worth a penny, and can be cashed out to Paypal once a person reaches 1,000 points, worth . OhmConnect says a person who participates two to three times a week can earn between 0 and 0 over a year. An SDG&E spokesman noted that customers are still responsible for paying their bill. A gunman opened fire inside of a Cheltenham Township, Pa. Walmart on Tuesday, leaving five people shot and several others with non-gunshot injuries, NBC Philadelphia reported, citing law enforcement officials. The incident took place around 6:15 p.m., and has since been contained. Eyewitnesses told NBC Philadelphia that the shooting took place at a cash register inside of Walmart.A gunman reportedly took the gun out of his waistband and shot five people during an altercation. A pregnant woman, who was not shot, was injured trying to get away. Two police officers were also injured during a fight trying to apprehend the suspect. The gunman reportedly fired 10 gunshots inside of the Walmart before fleeing. All eight victims are expected to survive. Two people were taken into custody after the suspected gunman and a possible accomplice tried to flee.  917

A bond has been set for a man accused of chasing after and shooting at a Rochester teen seeking directions to school. Jeff Ziegler, a former lieutenant in the Detroit Fire Department, was arraigned on felony charges of being in possession of a firearm and assault with intent to murder. His bond was set at ,000.According to Assistant Prosecutor Kelly Collins, Ziegler has a previous weapons conviction from 2005.  The judge additionally ordered the Rochester man to not have direct contact with the victim or his family, and to surrender all of his weapons to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department. He must also wear a GPS tether and attend mental health counseling two days a week. Because the suspect stays within a 10 mile radius of the victim, the judge ordered that if bond is made, he will be required to find another place to live. When 14-year-old Brennan Walker missed the bus and tried to walk to school Friday morning, he got lost after he couldn't remember the route. That's when Walker attempted to ask for directions at a nearby home.Zeigler allegedly chased after Walker and fired a shot because he and his wife believed the 14-year-old was attempting to break into their home, according to a press release.    1319
