SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Strong Santa Ana winds moved through San Diego County Tuesday, toppling a big rig as it traveled on Interstate 8 near Alpine. The crash happened at 8:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes at Willows Road, blocking the left lane for about an hour and a half, CHP officer Jim Bettencourt reported. Another semi overturned on Interstate 15 in Fontana. San Diegan Bashar Shebo was driving through the area on his way to Las Vegas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Santa Ana winds have fueled the most destructive wildfires in San Diego’s history, including the Cedar Fire in 2003 and the Witch Creek Fire in 2007.But why do Santa Anas form and what makes them so effective at spreading fire?Typically, during the day, San Diego’s winds blow from the ocean to the shore. These onshore winds tend to carry a lot of water vapor.However, Santa Ana winds blow the opposite direction, from the east to the west, and they have all the ingredients fires need to spread.“Strong winds,” said National Weather Service San Diego meteorologist Philip Gonsalves. “They’re typically very dry, and we usually end up with warmer conditions.”Strong. Dry. Hot. A fourth key factor elevating the fire danger is the timing of this wind pattern.“They typically occur in the fall, which is that time of the year when the fuel moistures are very low, and so the fuels are primed for ignition,” Gonsalves said.Winds flow from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. Santa Anas form when there is high pressure over the Great Basin, located in Nevada and parts of Utah, and low pressure over Southern California.The winds are coming from the desert, but that’s not why they’re hot. They are hot for the same reason that air coming out of a bicycle pump is hot, Gonsalves said. It’s because the air is getting compressed.As the winds flow west out of the Great Basin, they travel over mountains. At high elevations, the air is very cool, but as the winds move downslope into lower elevations where the pressure is higher, the air gets compressed. That compression rapidly drives up the temperature in what’s called the Adiabatic Process.This process also dries out the air, and dry air can heat up much faster.As the winds move downslope, they pass over ridges and through canyons, which act like funnels, speeding up the winds.Santa Ana winds can pop up any time the Great Basin is cooler than Southern California, typically from September to May. But peak season is considered to be October.The Santa Ana event on Tuesday is falling a little before the peak season because of the positioning of highs and lows in the Northern Hemisphere, Gonsalves said, but the end result is the same: strong, dry, warm winds and extreme fire danger. 2281

The meeting comes days after Governor Gavin Newsom released a mandate saying students can only return to campus when the county has been off the state’s watchlist for two weeks.The discussion focused on tackling challenges for the upcoming school year. All four districts say one of the main issues is a lack of funding.“I listened to the governor speaking about how money has come to school districts,” said Dr. Katie McNamara, superintendent of South Bay Union School District. “It’s good to note that none of that money has arrived yet.”She says they’ve had to dip into the district’s general funds to pay for things like PPE and improving distance learning models.Cajon Valley reopened in-person summer programs last week and say they will be staying open.The County Office of Education says the governor’s order does not apply to camps or day cares.“We have almost 5,000 students on campus, today, right now in a version of summer school that we're calling child care.”The Chula Vista Elementary Union superintendent, Dr. Francisco Escobdedo says they’re paying close attention to testing.“In order for us to feel safe our contagion levels have to lower, the curve has to plateau.”Escobedo adds they’re working on providing more internet hot spots for families who need it. 1446

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University Saturday ordered all on-campus residents to stay at home over Labor Day Weekend amid an increase of coronavirus cases tied to the university.The university sent an email to students who live on campus, advising them to stay “in their current residences except for essential needs.”The “Stay at Home” order is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday, September 5, through Tuesday, September 8 at 6 a.m.RELATED: San Diego State University reports 120 more COVID-19 cases since fall start“At that time, this order will be revisited and updated as necessary,” the university said of the order’s expected expiration.“Violations of this order may result in disciplinary consequences,” the school continued, although no specificities were given as to the consequences for violating the order.The announcement comes as the university has, so far, experienced 184 confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases since the start of the fall semester. 978
