GRANTVILLE, CA (KGTV) - A temporary relocation is becoming permanent for one Navy sailor.A driver backed into a hydrant in February causing flooding to 10 units at the Mission Heights Condominiums in Grantville.Cody Downs was among the affected and hoping to move back in after his apartment was repaired, all while others affected moved out.The active duty sailor says he was told by the management association in February that he could likely move back in by March. “It was just missed deadline after missed deadline,” said Downs.On Tuesday, Downs signed his 30-day clearance notice after the owner he was renting from told him they were selling the unit because of mounting delays from the management association and contractor.“I was intending on living here for the foreseeable future,” said Downs, “to have that taken away from me without any regard or any doing is just devastating.”The management company for the building First Service Residential could not provide a comment but said over the phone that repairing the affected apartments was ’98% resolved.’Downs is searching for a new place now, but he just wishes he didn’t take them for their word. "There was no verification process and I just kept giving trust and trust and maybe in a way I was the betrayed fool,” said Downs, “at the end of the day I lost my home.”  1375

Health officials in Wisconsin are warning against eating a traditional holiday dish called "cannibal sandwiches."According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, the dish is raw, lean ground beef served on bread with sliced onions, salt and pepper. Governor Greg Abbott issued an Executive Order on Thursday to ensure hospital bed availability for COVID-19 patients as Texas faces an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.The Governor’s order suspends elective surgeries at hospitals in Bexar, Dallas, Harris, and Travis counties.Under this order, the Governor directs all hospitals in these counties to postpone all surgeries and procedures that are not immediately, medically necessary to correct a serious medical condition or to preserve the life of a patient who without the immediate performance of the surgery or procedure would be at risk for serious adverse medical consequences or death, as determined by the patient’s physician.Through the proclamation, the Governor can add or subtract from the list of counties included in the Executive Order to address surges in hospitalizations that may arise in other parts of the state.“As Texas faces a rise in COVID-19 cases, we are focused on both slowing the spread of this virus and maintaining sufficient hospital capacity for COVID-19 patients,” said Governor Abbott. “These four counties have experienced significant increases in people being hospitalized due to COVID-19 and today’s action is a precautionary step to help ensure that the hospitals in these counties continue to have ample supply of available beds to treat COVID-19 patients. Horseshoe crabs are prehistoric creatures that predate the dinosaurs, but pharmaceutical companies depend on them to this day for their unique blue blood.The crabs’ blood is hypersensitive to endotoxins, making it the perfect testing ground to see if a coronavirus vaccine is harmful to people."The fact that we rely so much on these really primitive creatures that predate the dinosaurs," said Barbara Brummer, the state director of The Nature Conservancy in New Jersey.From Massachusetts to South Carolina, the crabs are collected and taken to laboratories. But one of their largest breeding grounds is right in New Jersey, in the Delaware Bay."The concern is the population of horseshoe crabs in the Delaware Bay has been declining over the years," said Brummer. "They are needed for the ecological value they bring for shorebirds.”Shorebirds rely on the crabs' millions of eggs for food.New Jersey fishermen are banned from using the crabs for bait. But pharmaceutical companies remove about a half-million horseshoe crabs from the ocean every year.In the labs, about one-third of a crab's blood is removed for testing. If the crab's blue blood clots up, the medicine is no good.The crabs are then returned to the ocean.However, a study by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission estimates about 15% of the crabs do not survive."There is an alternative test," Brummer said. "They have created a test that does not involve the bleeding of the crabs.
