WASHINGTON, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Two U.S. astronauts conducted the fourth and final scheduled spacewalks for space shuttle Endeavour 's STS-134 mission on Friday morning, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced. The seven-hour, 24-minute spacewalk completed by Mike Fincke and Greg Chamitoff at 7:39 a.m. EDT (1139 GMT) was the final spacewalk conducted by space shuttle astronauts before NASA turns over Endeavour and sister ships Discovery and Atlantis to museums. Space station crew will continue to make spacewalks for maintenance and repair tasks. At 5:02 a.m. (0902 GMT), Fincke and Chamitoff surpassed the 1, 000th hour astronauts and cosmonauts have spent spacewalking in support of space station assembly and maintenance. The milestone occurred four hours and 47 minutes into the spacewalk, the 159th in support of station assembly and maintenance, totaling 1,002 hours, 37 minutes. The astronauts completed their mission to stow the 50-foot-long boom on the station truss and work on some new installations to extend the space station's robotic arm. After that, shuttle commander Mark Kelly called Mission Control in Houston to mark the milestone -- after 12 years of efforts."Space station assembly is complete," Kelly said.It was the 248th spacewalk U.S. astronauts have conducted and the 118th from space station airlocks. Landing is scheduled for 2: 32 a.m. EDT (0632 GMT) on Wednesday at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Shuttle Atlantis is targeted to launch on July 8 for space shuttle's final flight.Endeavour lifted off on May 16 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, to deliver to the International Space Station a 2-billion- dollar, multinational particle detector known as the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS).AMS, a particle physics detector, is designed to search for various types of unusual matter by measuring cosmic rays. Its experiments are designed to help researchers study the formation of the universe and search for evidence of dark matter, strange matter and antimatter.NASA's 30-year-old shuttle program is ending due to high operating costs. The Obama administration wants to spur private companies to get into the space taxi business, freeing NASA to focus on deep space exploration and new technology development. When the U.S. space shuttle program officially ends later this year, the Russian space program's Soyuz capsule will be the only method for transporting astronauts to and from the station.

IWATE, Japan, March 14 (Xinhua) -- A 15-strong Chinese international search and rescue team Monday morning set out to join the relief work in Oofunato, Iwate, a city severely damaged by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake Friday. The Chinese international search and rescue team, which arrived in Oofunato at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday night, is the first overseas team to join and help out the relief work in the city.Team leader Yin Guangfui said they have brought along life exploration device and some other equipment to help carrying out the rescue. The team, with good experience in search and rescue, will strive to do the relief work, Yin added. The team members, including rescue and medical personnel, gathered at a primary school in Oofunato on Sunday and set off at 7:30 a.m. to the disaster-hit area together with the Japanese rescue teams after a briefing. BEIJING, Feb.14 (Xinhua) - Shanghai General Motors Co. will recall 2,806 imported Cadillac CTS vehicles in China to repair faulty track bars to prevent safety risks, China's quality watchdog said on Monday. The recall, which is set to begin on March 21, includes models that were produced between June 16, 2008 and April 20, 2009, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement on its website. The statement said that the company would repair or replace the rear suspension track bars of the recalled vehicles because some nuts on the bars are likely to loosen and cause worn screw threads. This could lead to a loosened track bar under extreme conditions, which is unsafe when traveling fast, it said. The company is to contact car owners to provide free checks and repairs. Owners may also contact the automaker on its free phone service (telephone number: 8008201902) for more information and to make appointments.

WASHINGTON, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Researchers at the University of Colorado (CU) and the Harvard University have found that people living at higher altitudes have a lower chance of dying from ischemic heart disease and tend to live longer than others, according to a study published this week in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. They spent four years analyzing death certificates from every county in the United States. They examined cause-of-death, socio- economic factors and other issues in their research. They found that of the top 20 counties with the highest life expectancy, eleven for men and five for women were located in Colorado and Utah. And each county was at a mean elevation of 5, 967 feet above sea level. The men lived between 75.8 and 78.2 years, while women ranged from 80.5 to 82.5 years.Compared to those living near sea-level, the men lived 1.2 to 3. 6 years longer and women 0.5 to 2.5 years more."If living in a lower oxygen environment such as in our Colorado mountains helps reduce the risk of dying from heart disease it could help us develop new clinical treatments for those conditions," said Benjamin Honigman, professor of Emergency Medicine at the CU School of Medicine. "Lower oxygen levels turn on certain genes and we think those genes may change the way heart muscles function. They may also produce new blood vessels that create new highways for blood flow into the heart."Another explanation, he said, could be that increased solar radiation at altitude helps the body better synthesize vitamin D which has also been shown to have beneficial effects on the heart and some kinds of cancer.Despite these numbers, the study showed that when socio- economic factors, solar radiation, smoking and pulmonary disease were taken into account, the net effect of altitude on overall life expectancy was negligible.Still, Honigman said, altitude seems to offer protection against heart disease deaths and may also play a role in cancer development.Colorado, the highest state in the nation, is also the leanest state, the fittest state, has the fewest deaths from heart disease and a lower incidence of colon and lung cancer compared to others.

SHENYANG, Feb.3, (Xinhua) -- Fire gutted Thursday a five-star hotel in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, and no casualties had been found, local officials said. The fire broke out at 0:13 a.m. at Tower B, an apartment building of the Dynasty Wanxin building complex, and the flames quickly spread to the adjacent Tower A, which is largely a five-star hotel. All the 50-odd people in the hotel were evacuated. No casualties are found. The fire was effectively controlled, Shenyang Municipal Public Security Bureau officials told Xinhua at 4:35 a.m..Police said the fire was triggered by fireworks, which accidentally sparked off the external wall of the buildings. Further investigation into the cause and losses of the fire is still underway.Fire engines, whose water guns could jet water only 50 meters high, were helpless at the fire which flamed on the top of Tower A, 219 meters high.Power supply in the hotel was not cut off, which was said to keep the automatic spray facilities in operation in the building.Personnel from adjacent five-star Sheraton Shenyang Lido Hotel were evacuated, and residents around the Dynasty Wanxin building mainly stayed at home.Top leaders of the province and the city, including Chen Haibo, mayor of Shenyang, arrived at the site soon afterwards to direct efforts to quell the fire. The Dynasty Wanxin building complex, located in the bustling Qingnian Street of Heping District, comprises of three towers. The fire engulfed Tower A and B, with Tower C intact.
