Gap has apologized for a map of China on one of its T-shirts that upset internet users in the country.A user on Chinese social network Weibo posted photos of a T-shirt they said was on sale at a Gap store in Canada, complaining that its design left out Taiwan and islands claimed by Beijing in the South China Sea.The US clothing brand is the latest international company to find itself in hot water over Chinese territorial issues.The Chinese government in Beijing considers self-governed Taiwan to be an integral part of its territory and comes down hard on any suggestions to the contrary. China also claims sovereignty over a large swathe of territory in the South China Sea, including areas claimed by other countries like Vietnam and the Philippines.Gap responded to the criticism on Weibo by announcing it had pulled the T-shirts from the Chinese market and destroyed them."Gap Inc. respects China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. We've learned that a Gap brand T-shirt sold in some overseas markets failed to reflect the correct map of China in the design," the company said in a statement posted late Monday on Weibo."We sincerely apologize for this unintentional error," it added. "We're currently conducting an internal inspection."The company didn't say whether the product would be withdrawn from sale in other markets.A series of other big Western brands have apologized over missteps on Chinese territorial issues.Chinese authorities in January blocked Marriott's websites and apps for a week after the company listed Tibet, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as separate countries in emails and apps. HARRISON, Ohio -- A dad used heroin in a gas station parking lot while his 2-year-old daughter sat in the backseat, according to a police affidavit. The father then resisted arrest and had to be subdued with a stun gun, police said.Brenton Sturgill, 37, of Harrison, had two hypodermic needles -- one “still loaded with heroin” -- when he was arrested Saturday at the BP station at 9055 Dry Fork Road, according to the affidavit.Sturgill resisted arrest, leading to a “physical altercation,” according to the arresting officer. He has been charged with using illegal drugs, endangering children and resisting arrest. He appeared in court Monday morning. 686

Hillary Clinton tweeted her support on Wednesday of 11-year-old Mariana Taylor, who was reprimanded by her teacher in a Maryland school for kneeling during the Pledge of Allegiance. The former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic Party nominee for president said on Wednesday, "It takes courage to exercise your right to protest injustice, especially when you’re 11! Keep up the good work Mariana."Mariana's parents have joined with the ACLU after her teacher allegedly reprimanded the Catonsville, Md. sixth grader. Mariana, a student in the Baltimore County School District, has a rule that stipulates that students and staff must "stand and face the flag and while standing give an approved salute and recite in unison the Pledge of Allegiance."The next line of the rule does stipulate, however, "Any student or staff member who wishes to be excused from the flag salute shall be excused."Jay Jimenez of the Maryland ACLU spoke on the policy at a recent district board meeting, urging the board to clarify the district's policy.  "I decided to kneel because there is a lot of things I really don't agree with in the country happening - racism, sexism and the person in the White House, particularly the wall - it's not ok," Mariana said in May. "I feel like it's important to stand up for what I believe in and I want to inspire other people to do it too."According to the ACLU, Mariana was in tears after leaving the classroom as her teacher pushed to have her make a presentation explaining her actions to the class. After Mariana's parents were called by a school guidance counselor, her parents claimed there was confusion on whether students were allowed to forego the Pledge of Allegiance. "The Supreme Court has been very clear that students do not lose their First Amendment rights when they enter the schoolhouse door," Jimenez said. "The ACLU urges Baltimore County and all Maryland schools to review and update their policies to honor respectful student activism in the future, like silently ‘taking a knee' during the Pledge of Allegiance."The school's principal told the Washington Post that he agreed that the district's policy needed to be clarified.  2219
