BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese nurses were awarded the Florence Nightingale medal on Tuesday for their prominent contributions to health care.     Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is also the honorary president of the Red Cross Society of China, conferred the medals on the nurses at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing.     Premier Wen Jiabao and senior leaders including Li Changchun, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang also attended the awarding ceremony.     Chinese nurses have made great contribution to the country's humanitarian cause, said Vice Premier Hui Liangyu at the awarding ceremony.     A total of 28 nurses from 15 countries worldwide won the award this year.     The Florence Nightingale medal, which is the highest international honor for nurses, is being given for the 42nd time since its introduction in 1912.     "It honors exceptional courage and devotion to caring for the victims of armed conflict or other disasters, or exemplary service and a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education," according to the Web site of the International Committee of the Red Cross.     The award is named after Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), an English nurse known for her pioneering work to improve the care of sick and wounded soldiers during the Crimean War (1853-1856).     A total of 54 Chinese nurses have won the award since the country began to recommend candidates for the award in 1983.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States issued a joint statement in Beijing Tuesday, promising that the two countries would "take concrete steps" to advance "sustained and reliable" military-to-military relations in the future.     "The two sides will actively implement various exchange and cooperation programs agreed between the two militaries, including by increasing the level and frequency of exchanges," according to the joint statement issued after Chinese President Hu Jintao met with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     The two sides commended the outcomes of the visit to the U.S. by General Xu Caihou, vice chairman of the Chinese Central Military Commission, in October this year.     Preparations would be made for the visit to the U.S. by General Chen Bingde, chief of the General Staff of China's People's Liberation Army, and the visits to China by Robert Gates, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, and Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, the statement showed.     The goal of these efforts, according to the statement, is to improve the Chinese and U.S. militaries' capabilities for practical cooperation and foster greater understanding of each other's intentions and of the international security environment.     Obama is in Beijing for a four-day state visit to China that started in Shanghai Sunday night.

BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Monday asked auditors to keep a close eye on public investment projects to help avoid embezzlement and waste of public funds.     Jerry-built projects and vanity projects should be strictly forbidden with the help of closer follow-up scrutiny of public funds, said the premier in a meeting with participants at a national auditing conference.     The National Audit Office (NAO) statistics showed that altogether 234.7 billion yuan (34.51 billion U.S. dollars) of public funds have been misappropriated and 16.3 billion yuan wasted during the first 11 months this year. WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) --The U.S. Commerce Department said on Tuesday that it has set preliminary antidumping duties (AD)on imports of steel grating from China, a move that might escalate trade disputes between the two countries.     The department said it "preliminarily determined that Chinese producers/exporters have sold steel grating in the United States at 14.36 to 145.18 percent less than normal value."     As a result of this preliminary determination, Commerce will instruct U.S. Customs and Border Protection to collect a cash deposit or bond based on these preliminary rates.     The product covered by this investigation is a downstream steel product typically comprised of bearing and cross bars used for walkways, platforms and flooring.     From 2006 to 2008, imports of steel grating from China increased 538.44 percent by volume and were valued at an estimated90.7 million dollars in 2008, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.     Commerce said that it is currently scheduled to make its final determination in April 2010.     If Commerce makes an affirmative final determination, and the U.S. International Trade Commission makes an affirmative final determination that imports of steel grating from China materially injures, or threaten material injury to, the domestic industry, Commerce will issue an antidumping duty order.     The new case followed U.S. President Barack Obama's recent decision to impose punitive tariffs on all car and light truck tires from China for three years, a move quickly denounced by China as a "serious act of trade protectionism."     The protectionist moves by the Obama administration will ultimately hurt the U.S.-China trade relations, which are becoming more and more important due to the global financial crisis, economists warned.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 1 (Xinhua)-- HSBC has raised its forecast of China's GDP growth this year to 8.1 percent, said HSBC Group Chairman Stephen Green here Sunday.     The bank's previous forecast was 7.8 percent.     While attending the annual International Business Leaders' Advisory Council (IBLAC), Green said the world financial crisis has not derailed either of the two most noteworthy and transformative trends in global finance: "the rise of China and the shift from west to east."     He also expected effects of China's stimulus packages would further lift the country's GDP growth and sustain the recovery momentum into 2010.     Green said Shanghai, as China's largest city, had kept a relatively stable growth during the crisis, which suggested it had the potential to become one of the world's financial centers comparable to New York or London.
