Severe storms in the South and Central US claimed four lives Saturday.Three people in Kentucky died in storms that included at least one tornado, and one death was reported in Arkansas.A 79-year-old woman died when she was hit by debris in her southwestern Kentucky home, the Logan County Sheriff's Office said. A tornado that passed through the area was likely EF-2 in strength, the National Weather Service said. That means winds may have gusted up to 110 mph.The county's emergency management office said some structures, including barns and grain bins, were damaged.A man was found dead in Simpson County, Kentucky, after his car became submerged in a creek, CNN affiliate WSMV reported.In Robertson County, on the other side of the border with Tennessee, there were also reports of overturned vehicles, windows blown out, and downed trees.Another unidentified man in Union County, Kentucky, died when his car was submerged in a ditch filled with storm water.In Knobel, Arkansas, Albert Foster, 83, died when his trailer home was blown away by storms passing through, Clay County Sheriff Terry Miller said in a post on the department's official Facebook page.Power outages, downed power poles and flooded roads were reported in the county, the sheriff's office said.Ohio Governor John Kasich issued an emergency declaration for 17 counties - along the Ohio River and in southern Ohio - "due to dangerous conditions resulting from severe storms and heavy rain.""I urge people to stay safe by staying informed, not taking any chances and checking in on your neighbors, especially seniors and families with young kids," Kasich said in a press release.Parts of Kentucky and Tennessee were under a tornado watch until early Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service. 1809
ST LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — They’re not giving up until they get answers.On Wednesday, glioblastoma patients and families who have had loved ones with the deadly brain cancer in St. Lucie County, met with officials from the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County.READ MORE: St. Lucie County Glioblastoma CoverageIt was their first time meeting together since the health department revealed there is not a high number of glioblastoma cases in the county.That was determined after a five-week review of the state’s cancer registry from 1996 to 2015. The research focused on looking at the demographics of the area to determine how many new cases are to be expected each year in the county.Health officials determined St. Lucie County should see an average of 10 cases per year.The registry does not, however, have data yet for 2016 or 2017.Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach collected information from viewers who have glioblastoma or know of someone with glioblastoma in St. Lucie County to help provide some data for those two years.For now, 2016 appears to have at least 15 cases diagnosed in St. Lucie County, according to WPTV. In 2017, it appears there were 11 cases from people who came forward with their information.The information is not medically verified, but has been given to the department of health in St. Lucie County by WPTV’s Meghan McRoberts to further investigate.The Health department said though the 2016 and 2017 numbers might be higher than the average of 10 cases, there is not a set formula for what number would be considered ’too high'. It would take further research.People like Lenny Schelin, Jr. who are battling glioblastoma, were glad to hear the health department is still going to look into the local glioblastoma cases, regardless of the state data showing there is not a high local rate of the cancer.“There’s still a lot of unknowns,” Schelin, Jr. said. He said he knows the number from the state’s cancer registry has some potential flaws. For example, it does not account for people who lived in St. Lucie County but were diagnosed with glioblastoma out of state.“Too many people moved. Too many people get diagnosed somewhere else. Just too many variables,” Schelin, Jr. said.The Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County Administrator Clint Sperber, also noted the information from the state’s cancer registry does not look at specific addresses to evaluate exactly how close together the patients live.That’s an issue to Kim Hart, whose mother is battling the disease.“Finding out a younger person is going through it a mile from us… it’s unfair,” Hart said. Other patients’ families said some cases are on the same block and street.Kevin Perry, Jr.’s dad is also battling GBM.“They’re not here. They’re not looking at, 'Oh, five people within a small little area.' They’re just looking at numbers,” Perry, Jr. said.But that’s where the local health department can step in and take a closer look at the proximity of the cases.The glioblastoma of St. Lucie County support group is also committed to doing its own research to have the best possible chance of getting answers.“We have a lot more work to do,” Hart said.“It’s terrifying. I wonder if I’m sitting around waiting for something to happen to me or someone close to me or anybody in this area, like, if something’s causing it, I’m just very adamant that they need to figure it out,” Perry Jr. said. 3449

Social media has changed how campaigns reach voters before an election. It has also changed how news is spread.Websites known as “pink slime” organizations use computer-generated algorithms to produce content. These sites, unlike traditional news outlets which are funded by advertisements or subscriptions and maintain an editorial protocol, are generally funded for the purpose of promoting an agenda.The Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University found in late 2019 a total of 450 websites it described as “pink slime” organizations. Of these, 189 were designed in a way to appear to be local news outlets.The Tow Center said in 2020, that number has grown considerably to over 1,000 such sites.While many local newspapers have folded in recent years, the opportunity for news stories driven by algorithms to get traction with a community has grown.A New York Times investigation spotlighted groups such as Metric Media, Locality Labs, Newsinator, Franklin Archer and Interactive Content Services. These organizations run hundreds of sites that appear to look like traditional news outlets.“It is becoming an increasingly common campaign strategy for PACs and single-interest lobbyists to fund websites that borrow credibility from news design to help advance particular agendas,” according to a report by the Tow Center. “The proliferation of politically-funded local news sites across the political spectrum raises questions about how these entities represent themselves to the public, and how they are categorized by search engines and social platforms.”Adding to the concern of these outlets, according to the Tow Center, is that 90% of these stories are “algorithmically generated using publicly available data sets or by repurposing stories from legitimate sources.”The remaining 10% of these stories?“Many of the stories are directed by political groups and corporate P.R. firms to promote a Republican candidate or a company, or to smear their rivals,” according to a New York Times report.Not only are these sites growing while a number of legitimate news outlets are struggling to stay open, but they are increasing during an era of misinformation.Just last week, the FBI and intelligence community officials warned Americans of growing foreign influence in US elections. These foreign actors, according to leaders from the FBI and national intelligence agencies, say misinformation is being weaponized in hopes of influencing the election.And with misinformation spreading on the internet, trust in the news media as a whole has dropped significantly in recent years. According to Gallup polling, the number of Americans who say they trust the news had dropped from 72% in 1976, to a low of 32% in 2016. More recent polling places the proportion of Americans who trust the media at 40%.But one area of the media that Americans say they trust is their local news. In 2019, 67% of Americans said they can trust their local paper, which is up from 61% in 1998. Gallup also found last year that 74% say they trust their local TV news, and 65% say they trust their local radio news, both up slightly from 1998.While most Americans trust their local news, according to Penny Abernathy, nearly 1,800 local newspapers have closed since 2004. Worse, Abernathy told Poynter that these closures have created “news deserts” in small communities.“And when you lose a small daily or a weekly, you lose the journalist who was gonna show up at your school board meeting, your planning board meeting, your county commissioner meeting,” Abernathy told Poynter.With local newspapers getting the ax across the US, these pink slime sites have been able to take advantage of the credibility of local outlets, even though their reporters are not local to the areas they serve, and that’s assuming the story was not written by a computer.The Tow Center published a list of these so-called pink slime sites. Six Flags says it will pause its paid advertisements on social media platforms to ensure the platforms are devoid of hate speech and harmful content.Six Flags joins numerous companies who have also paused their ads for similar reasons, including Starbucks, Unilever, the European consumer-goods giant; Coca-Cola; Verizon and dozens of smaller companies.The company says it will take time to reassess internal policies and re-evaluate external partners.Last week, facing mounting pressure from advertisers, Facebook said they would flag all “newsworthy” posts from politicians that break its rules, including those from President Donald Trump. CEO Mark Zuckerberg had previously refused to take action against Trump posts suggesting that mail-in ballots will lead to voter fraud. Facebook will also ban false claims intended to discourage voting, such as stories about federal agents checking legal status at polling places. The company also said it is increasing its enforcement capacity to remove false claims about local polling conditions in the 72 hours before the U.S. election. 1091
