CAPE CORAL, Fla., — A Florida utilities crew discovered a fossil archeologists now believe may be of a woolly mammoth or mastodon.The crew was digging in a trench 17 feet below the ground in Cape Coral last month.The crew turned over the fossil to the city which brought in archeologists to assess it.Robert Carr with the Archeological and Historical Conservancy says the fossil fragment was probably part of the mammoth’s humorous bone, or upper arm.The fossil is roughly one foot long and 10 inches wide.He estimates the fossil is 12,500 to 250,000 years old, based on similar discoveries.According to the report, during that time "glacial retreat led to the formation of savannas across Florida and herds of mammoth, bison, antelope, and horse roamed the peninsula."According to the Florida Museum of Natural History (FMNH), there are only two recorded mammoth fossil sites in Lee County.However, Carr believes there may be other fossil beds within the city with the remains of other extinct mammals.The City of Cape Coral plans to donate the fossil to the Cape Coral Historical Museum in the coming months. 1138

California, get ready for nonstop flights to Hawaii on Southwest Airlines. Southwest Airlines announced on Thursday that four California cities will serve nonstop flights to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu (HNL), Kahului Airport on Maui (OGG), Lihue Airport on Kauai (LIH), and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA). Southwest Airlines plans to fly to those Hawaiian cites from Oakland Metropolitan Airport (OAK), San Diego International Airport (SAN), Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC) and Sacramento International Airport (SMF). The Texas-based airline plans to sell tickets to Hawaii sometime in 2018. The service plans are pending FAA approval.  743

CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) — Extreme heat swept through San Diego County Friday, with many areas reaching triple-digit temperatures. But some residents said they were more miserable than usual, as their power was shut off for half the day.The heatwave is here, and for those living in the deserts, things are just unbearable."My swamp cooler is going 24 hours, and I've got my ceiling fan going!" Campo resident Karen McIntyre said.But McIntyre says she is one of the lucky ones. She is worried more about her family living in Lake Morena, who, for about half the day, did not have any power."During the middle of a pandemic, during the middle of an extreme heatwave, they still send out notices advising them that they're going to be turning the power off today!" McIntyre said about her power company, SDGE.Although dated July 27, McIntrye says her family in Lake Morena received a letter from SDGE explaining the planned power outage on July 30, less than 24 hours before the planned outage. She said she had to scramble to get her two-year-old niece a place to cool off."She has a medical condition where she has to have her oxygen," McIntyre said.
