DETROIT — A bond between two 12-year-old boys is now helping a Detroit mother in her grief. After surviving two bouts with cancer, little KJ Gross' time on earth was cut short by the side effects of treatment. Now, KJ's best friend is helping his mom get some closure. KJ had defeated cancer twice in his young life, his mom San Singleton said. He had been free of the disease for six years when he landed back in the hospital from congestive heart failure."We packed up and we moved into the hospital," Singleton said. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A 95-year-old grandmother in Florida was arrested Saturday after police said she slapped her granddaughter in the face with her slipper before calling 911 to get her out of the house.According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Hattie Reynolds told police her granddaughter, Janeen Williams, 46, would not get out of bed, and that she was "tired of her staying in bed all day soaking up the air conditioning."When officers arrived at the home, Williams told police she did not want to press charges, but because of "strict domestic violence laws" Reynolds was arrested.According to a Florida statute, police officers have the ability to determine if an arrest is needed in a domestic violence instance once probable cause is established."If your wife reported that you threatened to hit her, you would be arrested because that is a domestic violence assault," police Chief Craig Capri told the News-Journal. "I just feel bad for her but the officers did their job as required by the law."Reynolds was booked in the Volusia County Jail and released the next day on her own recognizance.  1126

DENVER – Psychologists and social workers from Denver Public Schools were on-hand at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School Monday morning after a fourth-grade student died as a result of suicide late last week.The Denver County Coroner’s Office on Monday confirmed the boy, 9-year-old Jamel Myles, died as a result of hanging shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday.On Friday, Shoemaker Elementary School Principal Christine Fleming sent a letter home to families at the school that Jamal had died. Fleming did not discuss the manner by which the boy had died, but shared a guide showing signs of stress that students might be showing in the wake of the boy’s death.“Our thoughts are with the student’s family at this time,” Fleming wrote. “We will continue to process this sad news as a school community, and again, please feel free to reach out as needed for ongoing support.”Jamal's mother Leia Pierce told the Denver Post that the suicide was a result of being bullied after the boy came out as gay. “My child died because of bullying. My baby killed himself,” Pierce told The Denver Post on Monday. “He didn’t deserve this. He wanted to make everybody happy even when he wasn’t. I want him back so bad.”Pierce went on to say, “He was scared because he is a boy and it’s harder on boys when they come out. DEL MAR (CNS) - Horse racing at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has been canceled Thanksgiving Day due to stormy weather forecasts, racing officials announced Sunday. ``With inclement weather predicted to bring substantial rain on Wednesday and Thursday of the coming week, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club proactively canceled its scheduled Thanksgiving Day race card as part of its continuing emphasis on horse and rider safety,'' the club said on Twitter Sunday. Several of the races from Thursday's program, including the 0,000 Grade III Red Carpet Stakes, will be shifted to expanded race cards Saturday and next Sunday. DALLAS (AP) — A white former Texas police officer was found guilty of murder on Tuesday for fatally shooting an unarmed black teenager last year as the boy left a house party in a car full of teenagers.Roy Oliver was fired from the Balch Springs Police Department days after the April 2017 shooting. Oliver killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards after the then-officer fired into a moving car carrying five black teenagers leaving a local house party. Edwards was in the front passenger seat.Oliver testified during the Dallas County trial that he opened fire after seeing the car move toward his partner. He says he thought his partner was in danger. But his partner told jurors he didn't fear for his life and never felt the need to fire his weapon.The shooting launched the Dallas suburb of Balch Springs into a national conversation on issues of law enforcement and race. Experts said ahead of the trial that securing convictions against an officer was challenging, in part because criminal culpability in on-duty shootings is subjective and jurors are more inclined to believe police testimony.In closing arguments, defense attorneys told the jury they needed to evaluate the circumstances from Oliver's viewpoint and from what the former officer knew at the time. But prosecutors described Oliver as out of control and looking for a reason to kill. They argued that his firing into the car wasn't reasonable.The shooting came after Oliver and his partner, Tyler Gross, had broken up a large house party following a report of underage drinking. Both officers were inside the residence when they heard gunfire outside and responded. Authorities later determined the shots were fired near a nursing home in the area.Oliver retrieved his rifle and went toward Gross, who was ordering the car carrying Edwards to stop. Oliver testified that he saw the car back up and stop for a second before moving forward and going toward Gross.Testifying in his own defense, Oliver told the jury the car was about to hit his partner. Oliver said he felt he had no other option but to fire.Gross, however, testified that he did not fear for his life and never felt the need to fire his weapon. He also said he didn't feel like the vehicle was trying to hit him.Prosecutors said Oliver fired after the vehicle passed Gross.
