BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday paid a morale-boosting visit to the country's Paralympic athletes, urging them to "strive to become strong and fight for the best."     With 16 days to go until the opening ceremony in Beijing, Hu, accompanied by Vice President Xi Jinping, went to the training center for Paralympic athletes in a northeastern suburb of the capital in the morning. Li won two gold medals at the 2004 Athens Paralympics. He said he would fight for better performances at the Beijing Games.     Hu also shook hands with other track and field athletes, and looked over the artificial limbs and racing wheelchairs they used.     "I was here to cheer for you before the opening of the Games, and I was moved to see all of you striving to become stronger and training very hard." He wished them all good luck during the Games. BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other senior leaders took part in a voluntary tree planting activity at the Olympic Forest Park here on Saturday.     China's top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, top political advisor Jia Qinglin, as well as Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang, and Zhou Yongkang also planted trees at the park next to the national stadium, the main venue of the Beijing Olympic Games.     Covering some 680 hectares in the north of Beijing, the park is a major part of the 2008 Olympics infrastructure, which is expected to improve the city's environment and air quality.     Hu said during the activity that the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics are approaching. He urged Beijingers to support the Green Olympics initiative and make the city greener and more beautiful before athletes from worldwide come in August. However, many have acknowledged that the city has done much to improve its air quality.     This is the fifth time since 2001 for top leaders to take part in planting at the park, where nearly 500,000 trees have been planted.     Hu said voluntary tree planting is an effective way to get everyone involved in improving the environment. "For every tree we plant today, we gain another spot of green in the future," he said.     About 2 million Beijingers took part in planting activities in the capital on Saturday, which is Beijing's 24th voluntary tree planting day. 

GENEVA -- The Tibet issue is not an ethnic issue, not a religious issue, nor a human rights issue, but an issue either to safeguard national unification or to split the motherland, a Chinese diplomat said in Geneva on Friday."The Tibet issue is entirely an internal issue of China which concerns the country's sovereignty," said Qian Bo, counsellor of the Chinese Mission to the UN Office in Geneva.The diplomat was addressing a regular session of the UN Human Rights Council, during which some delegates made biased comments on the so-called human rights situation in Tibet.Those delegates' comments were "an evident act of politicizing human rights and practicing double standards," said Qian.Qian stressed that the human rights situation in Tibet had improved continuously since its peaceful liberation in 1951.He said Tibetans are now enjoying full religious freedom and their traditional culture has also been carried forward."The progress and achievements made in Tibet are facts that cannot be written off by lies and libels," he said.The diplomat stressed that the violent crimes committed in March in Lhasa, the capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, were mastermind and incited by the ** clique aimed at splitting the motherland.The riot has nothing to do with human rights, so China cannot accept any unreasonable accusations, he said.The diplomat also urged the Human Rights Council to avoid politicizing human rights and remove double standards in order to maintain its prestige and credibility.

PYONGYANG, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Tuesday made a five-point proposal to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).     Xi, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the proposal while meeting with Yang Hyong Sop, vice president of the Presidium of DPRK's Supreme People's Assembly.     Firstly, Xi proposed maintaining the trend of mutual exchange of visits by high ranking officials, and strengthening political communication and close relations between the Chinese Communist Party and the Worker's Party of Korea.     China will continue to exchange views on governance and party construction with the DPRK, maintaining communication on important issues, he said. FUZHOU, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm to hit China's coast this year, made landfall in the southeastern Fujian Province on Monday, according to the provincial observatory.     The eye of the powerful typhoon landed at Donghan Town of Fuqing City at 10 p.m. with winds of up to 119 km per hour. Typhoon Fung Wong, which was lashing Taiwan on Monday morning, continued to strengthen as it headed toward the southeastern coast of mainland China, according to the observatory of Fujian Province. "Heavy rains and winds are expected after the eye leaves the town," an official with the flood control office of Fuqing City said.     Before the typhoon landed, Fuqing had seen torrential rain with 205 millimeters falling from midnight to 8 p.m. on Monday.     In Puxia County, the power was cut off as 15 electricity transmission lines and 498 transformer stations were damaged. But no casualties were reported.     The typhoon is also likely to bring more heavy rains and strong winds in coastal areas of the province early on Tuesday. The rainfall could exceed 200 millimeters, the meteorologists forecast.     Offshore, winds could increase to force 12, while in the coastal cities, force 7 to 9 winds were expected, according to the latest forecast of the provincial meteorological station.     Torrential rains were forecast to hit the cities of Ningde, Putian and Quanzhou as well as the provincial capital Fuzhou.
