STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Hig Roberts, a decorated Alpine skier, has come out as gay.The two-time U.S. national champion joins a small group of LGBTQ skiers who have come out publicly in a sport that The New York Times describes as “closed and clubby.” That includes freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy, who revealed he is gay on ESPN in 2015.This makes the 29-year-old the first current or former male Alpine skier of his caliber to come out publicly in Alpine skiing, The Times reports.In an interview with The Times, Roberts said Alpine skiing has a hyper-masculine vibe and he was pressured to conform. He said that eventually, not being able to be openly gay as a professional athlete was hindering his performance.Roberts, who grew up in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, retired from skiing in March 2019 and moved to Norway to work in finance, but has since moved back to the U.S.He told The Times that he decided to come out in part to inspire young skiers and to let them know they can compete at the highest levels no matter their sexuality.Throughout his career, Roberts made 31 World Cup starts, competed for the U.S. Ski team and won two national titles. TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — Hurricane Iota has battered Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast and flooded some stretches of neighboring Honduras that were still under water from Hurricane Eta two weeks earlier. The extent of the damage was unclear because much of the affected region was without electricity and phone and internet service, and strong winds hampered radio transmissions.Officials reported at least four deaths around the region, and said other people were unaccounted for.Aid agencies struggled to reach their local contacts, and the government said in a statement that at least 35 towns in the east and north had no phone service. Nicaragua’s telecommunications ministry said phone and broadband provider Columbus Networks was offline because of flooding in Bilwi.Preliminary reports from the coast included toppled trees and electric poles and roofs stripped from homes and businesses, said Guillermo González, director of Nicaragua’s emergency management agency. More than 40,000 people were in shelters.Iota had intensified into a Category 5 storm, but it weakened as it neared the coast and made landfall with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph (250 kph) early Tuesday morning. TAMPA — Wearing masks is one of the most important ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 — and health experts say everyone should continue to care for their face coverings to ensure protection when in public.After wearing a mask for a few months, doctors say there are some clear, tell-tale signs that it is no longer working correctly."When the edges start to fray or if the pieces where they connect start to fall apart, or if they are visibly soiled, then you should really get a new mask," said Dr. Tracey Taylor, the associate dean of USF College of Nursing.Experts also say that if a mask no longer fits over the nose or doesn't have a close fit around the face or chin, it's time to get a new one."It's super important to make sure your mask is fitting appropriately, that it's not visibly soiled, that the edges aren't frayed and that the attachments to the ear loops or tie backs — whatever type you're wearing — is appropriately attached," Taylor said.For those who own cloth masks, experts say owners need to remember to wash them. Experts say washing cloth mask with detergent or soap is best and that they don't need to be washed with super hot water. Those who own cloth masks with filters should remove the filter and clean it separately.However, there's another option."You can put them in a paper bag and seal it up for a couple of days. That'll inactivate any virus that's on it," said Dr. Marissa Levine, a professor of public health practice at USF.After several months, experts say they have more information about which masks are effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19.Cloth masks are most effective when they have at least three layers of material or a spot to add a filter. They're typically the easiest for the general public to use because they're reusable, and doctors say the research shows they mostly prevent the spread of the virus.Although any face covering is better than none, some aren't as effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19.Experts say bandanas are very thin and don't offer the same type of protection as a mask.Doctors say any mask with a valve on it is completely ineffective because the valve allows virus-carrying particles to leak out.Popular neck gaiters that wearers can easily pull up and down don't provide a lot of protection for the wearer or those around them."If you find yourself with a single layer, you could use something like a paper towel inside there to add an extra layer if you need to," Levine said.Experts advise keeping two masks on hand in case one gets lost or breaks."There's no one thing that we do that will protect us to the highest level. The 49-year-old son of a prominent Macomb County, Michigan judge faces first-degree murder charges in the death of his father, whose body was found on a Florida golf course. Police said James Scandirito Jr. quickly became a suspect in the case after he called the Boca Raton police on April 1 to report his father, James "Skip" Scandirito Sr., missing. The son said his father never returned home on March 31, but Scandirito Jr.'s story had inconsistencies, according to police. Scandirito Sr.'s body was later discovered at an abandoned golf course in Boca Raton. The Alachua County police arrested Scandirito Jr. after he was seen driving his vehicle with stolen license plates. He's being held without bond in his father's death. Scandirito Sr. represented Harrison Township on the Macomb County Board of Commissioners in the 1990s and was later elected to serve as a judge in 41B District Court in Mount Clemens.  1000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Much like the rest of the country, unemployment rates skyrocketed in Florida at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. And while the Florida unemployment rate has fallen somewhat to 7.6%, many in the state are still in need of help and may get it through a program called EB or Extended Benefits.In October alone, more than 10,000 people applied for unemployment in the Tampa Bar area — including 7,338 in Hillsborough County and 3,799 in Pinellas County."We continue to see unemployment problems within our office; it's mostly coupled with eviction notices," said State Representative Anna Eskamani, a Democrat whose district covers the Orlando area.Eskamani has fielded calls from Florida's unemployed since March."We need political back-and-forth to stop. The American people are in desperate need of relief," she said.The regular 12 weeks of benefits for those unemployed only lasted until about mid-June. That's when many applied for PEUC, a 13-week extension that took extended benefits to about mid-September.With the state's unemployment rate remaining above 5% for as long as it has, regular unemployment benefits were extended but haven't been made available yet."They're trying to integrate it into the connect system, which is why they're saying December it's going to be available," Eskamani said.In order for Floridians to get extended benefits — or EB — their PEUC benefits must have been used up between June 7 and Nov. 7."I actually think the gap that's being sent by the US Department of Labor catches most people," Eskamani said.It could, however, have an impact on Disney World employees, many of whom were furloughed or laid off amid an extended park closure. What happens for others seeking unemployment in 2021 is still unclear.Eskamani says that by then, the state legislature should officially be able to file a bill that she and other lawmakers drafted in October, hoping to get claimants more money for a longer period of time."(I want to) increase the benefit amount to 0 — change the sliding scale of what's available to us at the limit of 26 weeks, which is the national average," she said. "Put in place time restrictions for when the (Florida Department of Economic Opportunity) has to get back to you on your eligibility status."Eskamani also hopes to extend benefits to self-employed who are out of work and have the legislature's Oversight Committee hold the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity accountable.She says once the bill filed, she hopes to push the bill into committee hearings.
