MONT BELVIEU, Texas — A Texas judge has ruled a school district’s hair policy is discriminatory after two Black students were suspended for their dreadlocks. According to KTRK-TV, the decision from the judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas came late Monday.The policy was at the center of controversy after a senior at Barbers Hill High School was suspended in January. District officials said it wasn’t about race or that dreadlocks weren’t allowed, just that his in particular were too long. The student was told he could not return to school or walk at graduation unless he cut his hair. He argued that his dreadlocks were part of his Trinidadian heritage.He and another student filed grievances on Jan. 27, followed by a lawsuit. MUSKEGON, Mich. - Organizing school supplies such as crayons, notebooks, and folders then packing them into backpacks is a labor of love for Muskegon sisters Payton and Madelyn Chittenden.“If you see something wrong, you should at least try to fix it,” said Payton.The sisters are working to make a difference for students this school year.“We donate school supplies to kids that… can’t afford it,” said Madelyn.In July, FOX17 introduced the sisters and their mission to collect school supplies for their classmates with families impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.They figured they would be able to pack a few dozen backpacks, but as the donations picked up so did the project’s impact.“It’s just making those kids smile and not worry about the coronavirus,” said Melissa Chittenden, mom.Melissa says monetary and supply donations have added to over ,000, which is enough to create more than 950 backpacks for kindergarten through fourth-grade students at Reeths Puffer Schools, Muskegon Public Schools, Holton Public Schools, and Fruitport Community Schools.That’s 15 to 25 kits per grade at each district’s elementary schools.“It means so much to me as a parent that this is what my kids are focusing on during a time with the corona, they’re not really worried about catching the germs, they’re worried about what can we do to make this a better place?” said Melissa.Teachers will distribute the kits to their students once classes start.Payton and Madelyn believe it could connect students during a year in which not much can be shared and teach them all a lesson of love.“It doesn’t matter if you’re helping a little or a lot, you’re still changing the world,” said Madelyn.“It will help them learn and they will know that they’re special and someone cares about them,” said Payton.Marisa Oberle from WXMI in Grand Rapids, Michigan first reported this story. 1876

Millions of small businesses are fighting off permanent closures, looking for every possible penny to help them stay afloat amid the pandemic. However, there is a little-known CARES Act rule that could net small businesses tens of thousands of dollars in just a few weeks, and it helps keep more people employed.Back in March, when Congress passed the CARES Act, most of the focus for businesses was on the billions of dollars allotted for Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) forgivable loans. Congress also included a temporary tax rule, at the same time, for businesses.“If you had a loss in 2018, 2019, or 2020, any of those years, you could carry it back up to five years to generate refunds,” said Chris Catarino, a CPA with the firm Drucker & Scaccetti in Philadelphia.Catarino explained that under the new rule, businesses can generate a tax refund by applying 2020 losses to taxes paid over the past five years, essentially making the tax burden in past years less, netting them the refund.Losses for 2020, though, can only be filed after Dec 31, 2020. However, the temporary rule also applies to 2019 and 2018. So, if a business had losses over those two years, they could carry back those losses to their respective five-year period and possibly generate a refund.Businesses can start filing for a refund on 2018 and 2019 losses now. Catarino explained they would have to file an amended return or 1045 form.“The 1045 is generally quicker,” said Catarino “The IRS is required to respond and process those within 90 days.”The tax refund, under the temporary net operating loss rule, could mean tens of thousands of much-needed dollars for some businesses. However, Catarino pointed out that the biggest refunds would be for businesses with the largest “swing” from the prior years.For example, take a business that did extremely well in 2019. It likely paid a high tax bill that year. Then, this year, it had a significant loss of business. That business could get most of the money it paid in taxes the year prior, possibly even all the money it paid but nothing more than was paid in taxes. The same principle applies to 2018 and 2019.“The idea that they could recoup some taxes that they already paid in the past, today, could really be significant,” said Todd McCracken with the National Small Business Association. “It could mean the difference between keeping your doors open or not.”Although the temporary tax benefit could save some businesses, there is concern that the businesses that may need it the most may not be aware of it.“It is the smallest companies that don’t know, that tend to deal with their taxes once a year,” said McCracken. "They don’t have an ongoing relationship with a CPA. They go have their taxes prepared in the spring and find out, ‘Wow, I could’ve had this benefit all along.’ Next spring, of course, could be too late.”It could be too late for many businesses, especially if another round of coronavirus-related closures occurs and a second stimulus package isn’t passed soon. 3031

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A new piece of evidence in the case of a missing Tennessee 5-year-old indicates that Joe Clyde Daniels could still be alive.The boy disappeared in April and investigators have long presumed he is dead. But, his body has never been found. Scripps station WTVF in Nashville obtained photos of the letter that was sent anonymously to Joe Clyde's grandparents.The handwritten letter was postmarked out of Nashville. It was sent this week to the grandparents in Dickson, Tennessee. The anonymous writer claims Joe Clyde's mother, Krystal Daniels, arranged to give the little boy away."I believe Krystal got Joe's clothes, packed them into a bag... and left Joe on the side of the road," the letter says.The writer claims that he is alive and living in west Tennessee, possibly in Jackson. "If we could get Krystal to confess what really happened...with this case. I know it's a bizarre case," the letter reads. The letter goes on to name those involved. WTVF has chosen not to reveal the names because the individuals have not been named by police as part of the investigation. Jake Lockert, the attorney for Joseph Daniels — Joe Clyde's father who is charged in his death — confirmed the grandparents have turned the letter over to authorities. Investigators have yet to comment on the new evidence.  Police say Krystal Daniels had motive against Joe Clyde. Investigators tell NewsChannel 5 she was frustrated with raising a child with autism and was angry the family was forced to give away their dogs because of him.  The letter doesn't mention the child's father. Earlier this year, investigators said Joseph Daniels confessed to killing his son. However, his attorney argues the confession was coerced.
