BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam agreed Thursday to properly deal with the maritime territorial issues in the South China Sea.This is one of the five consensus decisions made at the fourth meeting of the China-Vietnam steering committee on cooperation, which was co-chaired by Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem.China and Vietnam signed a package of agreements on the demarcation of their 1,300-kilometer land boundary last November. During the signing ceremony, the two nations agreed to begin discussions to formulate the guidelines to solve the sea issues.Khiem reaffirmed Thursday that Vietnam was willing to work with China to properly handle the sea issues in light of the overall situation of bilateral relations and the friendship between the two peoples, as well as the need to maintain stability.During the meeting, China and Vietnam also agreed to further increase political exchanges, deepen economic and trade cooperation, strengthen cultural exchanges as well as enhance coordination on major international and regional issues.Citing that this year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of China-Vietnam diplomatic ties and the China-Vietnam Friendship Year, Dai said the bilateral relations were at a crucial period of inheriting the past and forging ahead into the future. The 60-year history of bilateral relations prove that developing China-Vietnam friendship is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and the two peoples, said Dai, adding it is also conducive to the peace and prosperity of the region. He said that since the third meeting of the China-Vietnam steering committee on cooperation last year, the pragmatic cooperation between the two countries had achieved new progress. He mentioned growing political exchanges, productive mutual beneficial cooperation, dynamic cultural exchanges, progress in dealing with boundary issues, and closer coordination and mutual support on major international and regional issues.Dai stressed that, in light of the future development of bilateral relations, the two sides should always bear in mind the general situation and take a long-term perspective while maintaining good neighborly friendship. He further called on the two sides to learn from each other so as to achieve common development, and to increase mutual trust and understanding to appropriately cope with problems through friendly negotiations.China is ready to work with Vietnam to steer the development of bilateral relations from a strategic height and use the China-Vietnam steering committee on cooperation as a platform to push forward the bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, said Dai.Khiem said it was the firm position of the Vietnamese party and government to continuously enhance the Vietnam-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, which was also the priority of Vietnam's foreign relations.Vietnam always remembers China's support and help for its revolution and construction and is committed to developing a long-lasting friendship with China, he stressed, adding Vietnam was willing to work with China to enhance cooperation in various areas.

SUZHOU, Jiangsu, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Scholars and officials stressed the importance of protecting cultural heritage at the World Expo's second theme forum which opened in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province on Saturday.Culture remains the soul of a city and urban residents not only need to ensure that traffic moves smoothly, infrastructure projects are completed and their economic futures are secure, but they must also protect their cities' diversified cultures, noted Minister of Culture Cai Wu.The country's urbanization has improved people's lives, but also resulted in problems such as a disappearing cultural heritage and the sometimes monotonous appearance of cities, Cai said."If it goes on like that, it will certainly impede the growth of a city or a country and reduce the quality of people's lives," Cai warned.Further, globalization was causing more pressure to protect the nation's cultural heritage, said Sha Zukang, head of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.Cultural heritage protection should focus on providing a diversified culture rather than a monotonous culture, Sha said. With the theme focusing on cultural heritage and urban regeneration, the two-day forum was co-organized by the Ministry of Culture, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the Executive Committee of Expo 2010 Shanghai China, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the government of Suzhou. The forum has attracted nearly 800 participants from some 20 countries and regions, as well as international organizations.Participants to the forum include Deputy Director-General of UNESCO Hans d' Orville and the French architect and designer of China's National Center for the Performing Arts, Paul Andreu.A total of 189 countries have sponsored pavilions at the six-month Shanghai World Expo, whose theme is "Better City, Better Life".

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Wuhan Iron and Steel Company Ltd., the listed subsidiary of China's third largest steel maker, said Sunday that its net profit rose 90.43 percent year on year to 963.53 million yuan (141.7 million U.S. dollars) during the first half of the year as strong economic growth boosted steel demand and prices. The company's first-half-year sales reached 34.36 billion yuan, up 50.72 percent from one year earlier, it said in a statement delivered to the Shanghai Stock Exchange. However, costs also climbed in the first six months compared with a year earlier because of increases in raw material prices, it said.Production costs for steel products gained 47.12 percent year on year to 31.18 billion yuan. Further, the company's steel output in the first half of the year gained 29.75 percent year on year to 8.04 million tonnes.China's producer price index, a major gauge of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 6 percent in the January-June period, according to statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics. However, the company was likely to face a "difficult time" in the second half of 2010 and meeting its full-year profit target would become a "challenging task" as demand from auto, home appliance and real estate sectors experienced "drastic changes" since July, leading to more restrained sales and falling prices, it said.Company officials also worried that high prices of iron ore, coal and electricity would further push up production costs and squeeze profit margins. On Friday, the price of its shares fell 2.87 percent to 4.73 yuan on the Shanghai bourse.

BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- As a large number of new sites were discovered during the most recent survey of national cultural relics, Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong called for the careful filing and scientific preservation of all survey results on Tuesday.Liu made the remarks at a meeting of the third national cultural relics survey, which is expected to pave the way for improved rules on the protection of cultural relics.During the meeting, Liu hailed the current progress of the survey and extended her greetings to all who are working to preserve the nation's sites of cultural relics.Liu said the cultural relics survey is the foundation for protecting and putting to use the country's cultural relics in a scientific way, and is also a key part of evaluating the country's soft power.According to Liu, the on-spot investigation phase has finished, and "a large number of varied, new cultural relics sites" were discovered across the country.Though without overall figures, Liu revealed that newly discovered sites covered fields such as the history of the Party and the period of the revolution, the industrial heritage and traditional rural architecture, as well as others fields of study. The survey, which began in April 2007, will continue until December 2011.
