SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 0,000 went missing from New Hope Friendship Baptist Church in 2008 and 2010, according to new Sheriff’s Department investigation report Friday.The investigation was an Internal Affairs probe into Lt. Devera Scott. Scott was also the treasurer for New Hope Friendship Baptist Church during the time the money went missing.The report claims Scott admitted to church officials she took the money. However, the church told investigators they did not want to press charges as Scott had promised the church she would it pay it all back through monthly payments, and a portion of her retirement.The church also told investigators they were in the business of forgiveness and did not want to ruin Scott’s career, according to the documents.Investigators also learned that Scott made the church a beneficiary to a 0,000 life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance policy.The internal investigation became public Friday, following the ruling of a San Diego judge. The decision comes after local media, including 10News, sued to keep police unions from blocking departments from releasing records related to officer misconduct.The San Diego Sheriff's Department was not part of the suit and has been releasing cases pursuant to SB1421, according to sheriff's department Lt. Karen Stubkjaer.Scott retired from the sheriff’s department on March 22, 2013, before the investigation into the missing church money was complete according to the documents. No charges were ever made against Scott.Other court filings suggest Scott might have been facing financial problems at the time.10News reached out to the church for comment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 32 years after a double murder in Ramona, the suspected shooter has been arrested.San Diego Sheriff's Department says the deadly shooting occurred just before midnight on June 7, 1987, at a Ramona apartment on B Street, just behind Main St. Witnesses told deputies a family was having a birthday party for their four-year-old daughter when one of the guests, 27-year-old Jose Angel Solorio, got into an argument with several people.Solorio left the party angry but returned to the apartment with a gun and shot three men, identified as German Aviles, Ventura Aviles, and Carlos Holgin. German and Ventura Aviles did not survive the shooting.RELATED: 35-year-old cold case murder linked to San Diego manAfter the shooting, deputies learned that Solorio had fled to Mexico.It wasn't until April 2002 when Solorio appeared back on the radar for authorities. Homicide detectives located a family member in Texas who said she had contact with Solorio about two years prior and he was still in Mexico.FBI and U.S. Marshals Service continued working the case and in March 2019, Solorio was finally located and detained in Mexico.Friday, Solorio was extradited to San Diego and jailed on two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pilot Robert DeLaurentis touched down this week in San Diego after traveling 26,000 miles in the name of peace.DeLaurentis, known as the peace pilot, flew from the South Pole to the North Pole in a journey that took him to six continents and 22 countries in the name of peace."The mission of the flight is world peace and we're connecting the South Pole and the North Pole, the two places on the planet where peace has always existed and helping to connect everybody in between," DeLaurentis said.His journey to the only two locations on Earth that have never seen war will be chronicled in the upcoming documentary, "Peace Pilot to the Ends of the Earth and Beyond," featuring a collection of interviews, blogging, and observations.DeLaurentis encountered a slew of mechanical issues during his adventure."In fact, when I left Ushuaia for the South Pole I packed up all my personal belongings in a hotel rook with my address I assessed my chances of coming back at about 50%," says DeLaurentis. "Some of the problems we had on the flight included bursting fuel tanks, I was without GPS autopilot, and altitude heading and reference system for five hours."All those issues made worse knew by the coronavirus pandemic when he was forced to quarantine along the way — extending his trip from an intended five months to nine months."For every challenge, there was an opportunity and the pandemic created that for us because I had about a month and a half to reflect on what was happening to really work on my inner process," DeLaurentis said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was killed and three others were injured in an early Saturday morning crash involving two cars along the southbound lanes of SR-163 in Balboa Park.The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. on the Cabrillo Highway just south of the Quince Street overpass, according to the California Highway Patrol.The driver of a Lexus sedan rear-ended a Mazda sedan sending both cars off the highway. One of the vehicles tumbled down an embankment into a drainage ditch.The Madza was carrying two rideshare passengers in the rear seats, according to CHP. One of the passengers was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP. The other rear passenger was ejected out of the car causing the victim to suffer major injuries.Drivers of both vehicles are being treated for injuries.Investigators are working to determine the cause of the accident. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.All southbound lanes were temporarily shut down. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Parents who are concerned about their traditional school district’s ability to handle distance learning this fall are running into a roadblock when seeking other options: wait lists.School choice advocates say a growing number of California parents are seeking out charter schools that specialize in “nonclassroom-based” instruction because of their long track records in distance learning, but a new state law is essentially capping enrollment at pre-pandemic levels.“Tens of thousands families are in limbo right now,” said Jeff Rice, founder of the APLUS+ Network Association, an association of 85 nonclassroom-based California charters that specialize in personalized instruction.There are at least 13,000 students currently waitlisted throughout about two dozen of the association’s schools, Rice said.Advocates have launched petitions, urging lawmakers to scrap a provision in SB 98 that capped funding for all public schools -- including charter schools -- at February attendance levels.Schools are typically funded on a per pupil basis, but the cap means funding will not scale up as attendance grows.“Some [charter] schools have wait lists of 2,000,” said Jennifer Cauzza, executive director of the JCS Family of Charter Schools.Cauzza said she’s in contact with about 30 charter school executive directors and “all of them are capped.”About 300 of California’s 1300 publicly funded charter schools are classified as “nonclassroom-based,” Rice said. The term includes home school, online and hybrid models, and is somewhat of a misnomer because students often get some in-person instruction from a credentialed teacher.These tuition-free charter schools will operate wait lists on a lottery system, not a first-come basis, so parents still have time to apply.Otherwise, parents who want to homeschool their children have two other options, and both require the parent to act as the teacher, said Elisa Hilliard, who operates the Facebook page San Diego Homeschool Mom.Parents can file a PSA, a Private School Affidavit, and essentially open their own private school within their home. Parents select and teach their own curriculum, and must fund it themselves.Parents can also join a PSP, a Private School Satellite Program. These are umbrella organizations or co-ops of parents that assist with paperwork and help swap curriculums.Parents have until October to file a PSA, so families who are unable to get into a nonclassroom-based charter school may want to see how their traditional district school handles distance learning before going off on their own, Cauzza said. 2608
