Men may have a harder time maintaining friendships during the pandemic.Experts say it’s because social distancing guidelines have forced men out of their normal ways of communicating.“Men tend to construct their friendships on a shoulder-to-shoulder basis and women tend to use a face-to-face basis, so guys will get together and do things, like sports, going to the sports bar, activities,” said University of Maryland Professor Geoffrey Greif, author of the book “Buddy System: Understanding Male Friendships.”Greif says it's rare for men to reach out to each other just to talk. Men tend to be more cautious about how much they share.They'll also only ask to do something together so many times before the invitation is returned.“We're just not socialized to feel comfortable. We don't want to seem like we are stalking another guy for a friendship. Luxury fashion house Prada is withdrawing products after some items displayed in a Manhattan storefront were seen as depicting blackface imagery.The products, part of Prada's Pradamalia line, were pulled Friday after images surfaced of some merchandise depicting monkey-like figures with black faces and large red lips.New York-based civil rights attorney Chinyere Ezie spotted the products at the Prada store in Manhattan's Soho shopping district by happenstance on Thursday after recently returning from a conference in Washington.While in the nation's capital, she visited the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. She wrote on Facebook?that she was struck by how the items looked similar to images she saw in an exhibit on blackface at the museum and that seeing the products left her "shaking with anger."As of Friday afternoon, Ezie's Facebook post had been shared more than 9,000 times.Prada said?in a statement Friday that the Pradamalia products depict "imaginary creatures not intended to have any reference to the real world and certainly not blackface.""Prada Group never had the intention of offending anyone and we abhor all forms of racism and racist imagery. In this interest we will withdraw the characters in question from display and circulation," the statement read.Ezie said she felt Prada's response constituted the "same paltry excuses that we've heard throughout history about racist imagery," telling CNN affiliate WABC that Prada is "a multinational, multibillion dollar company. Losing a child to an undiagnosed heart condition is, in so many words, heartbreaking. But doctors may be close to preventing one type of heart disease before it even starts. It's giving hope to families fighting to overcome tragedy.Lisa Pardington's son Max was training for an Iron Man competition the day she last heard his voice."I called after he had worked out and he said, 'Mom my heart is racing,'" Pardington remembers. "And those words changed my life forever."That night Max went to sleep and never woke up."It's the worst day," Pardington says. "It's every parent's nightmare and we are living it every day."Max had cardiomyopathy, a disease in which the heart muscle is abnormally enlarged, thickened or stiffened. It's often genetic and is the most common cause of sudden death in young athletes."He played all kinds of sports but never did we know that Max had a heart condition until he passed away," Pardington says.Since most school physicals don't check for it, Beaumont Health organized a free Student Heart Check where doctors and volunteers are screening teens for the disease, before it's too late."It makes you feel good about what you do because I know we have saved lives coming to these events," says Beaumont cardiologist Dr. Steven Almany.Lori Herbert lost her son Anthony to the disease, and decided to become active in the program."I know if he could he would want us to save lives," Herbert says. "Not a minute goes by that I don't think of him."Anthony was a member of the Northern Michigan University football team when he passed away."He had just come back from conditioning that morning, went to breakfast and then went back to his dorm with his roommate and was going to watch a movie before their first day of classes," Herbert says. "And that's when he became unresponsive and went into sudden cardiac arrest." First responders tried to save him but couldn't."It didn't feel real," Herbert says. "It was just a nightmare. I mean he was eight hours away from us and there was absolutely nothing we could do."Herbert says they had never heard of the screenings done at the Student Heart Check during any physicals. That's why they hope heart check events like these spread to other cities across the country. "We knew we couldn't bring Anthony back but we wanted to hopefully keep other parents from having to endure what we had to endure," Herbert says. "I'm not going to lie, I wish that we could've gotten him to a screening and still had him here with us."But what if there were a way to prevent cardiomyopathy in children in their mother's womb before it even started to develop? Doctors at the Oregon health and Science University began researching that possibility.Dr. Sanjiv Kaul worked with researchers who were able to cut out the defective gene when they fertilized an egg in a lab."Yes everybody here was surprised," says Kaul, CEO of the Knight Cardiovascular Institute. "Then the cells repaired normally by themselves. We were amazed. It's like science fiction."While it hasn't been tested in humans, Kaul says potentially all cells after that one would be free of the abnormal gene."So, theoretically, in one generation we can remove this defect from the entire generation."While there's concern this technology could be used to create so-called "designer babies," Kaul believes with regulation, the research offers hope."Talking to a parent that lost a child I would have done anything in the world to save my son's life," Pardington says.Adding one more layer to the effort to keep children healthy and alive. 3620

Maybe music artist Moby was right, and “we are all made of stars.” New research suggests the calcium in our teeth and bones came from star explosions.Researchers from Northwestern University looked at a calcium-rich supernova with x-ray imaging, which provided a glimpse into the last month of the star’s life and ultimate explosion.The findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal, suggest a calcium-rich supernova is a compact star that gives off an outer layer of gas as it’s dying. When it explodes, the star’s matter collides with material, emitting bright x-rays.The explosion is so intensely hot and high pressure, it allows nuclear fusion to produce a massive amount of calcium in mere seconds. Typically, a star creates a small amount of calcium slowly by burning helium.Half the calcium in the universe likely came from calcium-rich supernovae.“These events are so few in number that we have never known what produced calcium-rich supernova,” said Wynn Jacobson-Galan, a first-year Northwestern graduate student who led the study. “By observing what this star did in its final month before it reached its critical, tumultuous end, we peered into a place previously unexplored, opening new avenues of study within transient science.”The observed explosion was named SN 2019ehk in the Messier 100 galaxy. If that sounds a little too fantasy, just know it was 55 million light years from earth.“Without this explosion, you wouldn’t know that anything was ever there,” Margutti added. “Not even Hubble could see it.”The team was able to look at images from the Hubble Telescope of the area of SN 2019ehk before the explosion to compare before and after.The researchers are working on a follow-up study that includes how the supernova is evolving after the explosion, according to statements made to CNN. 1821

MIAMI, Fla. – Norwegian Cruise Line announced Tuesday that it would be keeping its ships docked even longer amid ongoing COVID-19 concerns.The cruise line said it’s extending the suspension of its 2020 cruises to include all sailing through August 31, all sailing in September except Seattle-based Alaska Cruises, and select October sailing.The select October cruises include two trips to Alaska, as well as two trips to Canada and New England.The company is offering guests who had an active reservation on a suspended cruise a refund of their cruise fare in the form of a future cruise credit (FCC) for 125% of the amount paid to date on June 25.The FCC must be used one year from the date issued for any Norwegian Cruise Line voyage embarking through 2022, according to the company.Norwegian says guests who prefer to not take advantage of an FCC can elect to receive a lesser refund equal to the amount paid to date to the original form of payment 90 days after form submission for sailings originally scheduled to embark anytime from July 1 onward.For suspended cruises that were set to embark between July 1 and July 31, this form must be submitted not later than 11:59 p.m. ET on June 19, 2020. For later cruises, a refund form will go live at 9 a.m. ET on July 6 and it must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. ET on July 17. 1343
