SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men conspired with five other people in a series of home-invasion robberies in northern San Diego in which sleeping residents were roused at gunpoint and tied up, and one woman was sexually assaulted, a prosecutor said Wednesday.Deputy District Attorney Jalyn Wang told a jury that Thomas James Smith and Aaron Rico III were part of robbery crew dubbed the "Open Door Bandits," so named because in most of the 10 break-ins, the robbers gained access to homes through an unlocked door.Wang alleged that Smith, 26, and Rico, 22, were two of the major players in the robbery crew.A third major player, Stephen Ramon Gomez, pleaded guilty in the case.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodFour other defendants, Aaron Rico V, Victor Harvey, Robin Shawver and Jordan Wilson, also pleaded guilty.Wang alleged the home-invasion series began the night of Jan. 23, 2016, when Smith, Gomez and Shawver used garage door openers they found in cars to get into two residences in Mira Mesa, where they stole items including an X- box gaming system.On Jan. 26, 2016, at about 1:20 a.m., a man returned to his residence in Carmel Mountain Ranch after taking a friend home and saw that his house was being ransacked, the prosecutor said. The man chased one of the robbers, but could not catch him, Wang said.The DNA of Smith and Gomez was found on items left at the scene, according to the prosecutor.Three nights later, on Jan. 29, 2016, the bandits gained access to a home in Scripps Ranch through an unlocked door and robbed a family at gunpoint, yelling, "Where's the money? Where's the jewelry? Where's the gold?" Wang said in her opening statement.Smith, Gomez, Rico III and Harvey were charged in that break-in, Wang said.On Jan. 31, 2016, a woman was awakened at gunpoint in her Sorrento Valley home, tied up and sexually assaulted by one or two of the defendants, according to the prosecutor. The perpetrators allegedly took jewelry off the woman's body and threatened to shoot her.Wang said Gomez pawned the woman's wedding ring and his DNA was found on a pillow case on her bed.On Feb. 5, 2016, Smith and Rico III broke into a home in Rancho Bernardo through an unlocked door and held a couple at gunpoint while ransacking the residence, Wang told the jury.The night of Feb. 11, 2016, four homes in  Carmel Mountain Ranch and Sabre Springs were broken in to, including three in the same neighborhood, the prosecutor said.In one robbery, a barking dog alerted a sleeping couple to intruders, and the wife's 911 call forced the suspects to flee, Wang said.In another break-in, the robbers tied up a family -- including a 2- year-old who had his wrists taped together -- and spent an hour ransacking the home before leaving, the prosecutor said.Smith's attorney, Deputy Public Defender Damian Lowe, said that once police determined the crimes were connected, they started to follow a number of suspects, not including his client.Lowe said "significant" mistakes were made in the investigation of the robbery series.He told the jury the case would come down to "what evidence is going to prove beyond a reasonable doubt as to who did what?"Smith and Rico III face life in prison if convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery, burglary and sexual assault. 3302

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 14-year-old from Jamul was among seven military teenagers crowned Operation Homefront 2018 Military Child of the Year.Isabelle Richards, who attends High Tech Middle School in Point Loma, received the award this week for her accomplishments in leadership and extracurricular activities while facing the challenges of military family life.Richards was given the Child of the Year award for the U.S. Navy.The San Diego teenager created a local call to action group called Cards and Cupcakes Supporting Our Wounded Warriors, which sends greeting cards and cupcakes to a segment of veterans. She also founded and runs the Dove Self-Esteem project at High Tech Middle.The hours Richards has dedicated to the cause pales in comparison to the contributions of wounded veterans, according to the teen, who says "When I am tired or feeling lazy, I remember what they sacrificed, and they never complain."In addition to her accomplishments, Richards has worked with the Freedom Station and USO San Diego and maintained a 4.0 GPA. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Father’s Day boat trip off the San Diego coast led to a rare wakeboarding encounter with dozens of dolphins for a Pacific Beach boy and his family. “It was a quick little boat ride and we saw paradise up there,” said Emiliano Gallego of Crown Point. Gallego and his three children decided to take a boat ride about 7:30 a.m. on a gloomy Sunday. They were about a mile off Pacific Beach when they realized their 24-foot Yamaha ski boat was surrounded by dolphins. “It was impressive,” said Gallego, who believes there were thousands of dolphins swimming with the pod. Gallego’s 9-year-old son Demi, an avid wakeboarder, grabbed his gear and jumped in the water. Gallego recorded the incredible scene. “At first, he was scared. He eventually just started enjoying the ride with the dolphins,” Gallego said. Gallego’s younger son and daughter didn’t want to jump in. “Too many dolphins,” said Gallego. After the spectacular ride, the family went out to breakfast, amazed at what they saw. “That was the best gift ever,” said Gallego. 1059

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With coronavirus cases surging statewide and hospital beds expected to fill rapidly, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday a more sweeping stay-at-home order could soon be imposed in the vast majority of California in hopes of preventing the health care system from being overrun.Newsom said nine more of the state's 58 counties have been moved into the most restrictive "purple" tier of the state's COVID-19 monitoring system, meaning 51 counties are now in that tier. And those counties would be the ones likely subjected to a stay-at-home order reminiscent of the restrictions that were imposed at the onset of the pandemic, he said. All of Southern California is in the "purple" tier."The red flags are flying in terms of the trajectory in our projections of (case and hospitalization) growth," Newsom said. "... If these trends continue we're going to have to take much more dramatic, arguably drastic action, including taking a look at those purple tier counties."He said those actions include "the potential for a stay-at-home order for those regions in purple."The action follows what Newsom called an 89% increase in hospitalizations statewide over the past 14 days, and projections that the number of hospitalizations could double or triple within a month, based on the surging case numbers over the past two weeks. The state projects that 78% of hospital beds will be filled by Christmas Eve, and all currently available intensive care unit beds will be occupied by mid-December."We're now looking in real time at hospitalization numbers and ICU capacity in those regions," he said. "We are assessing this in real time over the next day or two to make determinations of deep purple moves in those purple tier status (counties) that is more equivalent, more in line with the stay-at- home order that folks were familiar with at the beginning of this year, with modifications in terms of the work that we are currently doing."Newsom noted that all hospitals have the ability to increase bed capacity, and the state has 11 surge facilities planned statewide that can add nearly 1,900 beds. But providing staffing for all of those beds could be an issue, he said.Dr. Mark Ghaly, the state's Health and Human Services Secretary, noted that since hospital numbers tend to rise about two weeks later than cases are confirmed, the impact of the infection surge over the past two weeks has not even begun to impact the already elevated hospitalization numbers.Ghaly said everything is on the table in terms of confronting the surge, including the possible stay-at-home order."Everything is on the table in considering how we effectively guide the state through this, and working with our local partners to make sure what we do is both impactful and as time-limited as possible," Ghaly said. "We know this is hard for all Californians, and (we are) making sure that we choose something that will make a difference but that we can track that difference and give people some confidence that we will only do it as long as we need to to bring the hospitals into a situation that they can handle the incoming patient numbers and provide high-quality care in a way that protects our health care workforce as well." 3227
