LONG BEACH (CNS) - A woman was killed early Monday afternoon by a man who used a scooter to assault her on a street in Long Beach.Officers responded about 12:30 p.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 6400 block of North Obispo Avenue, according to Long Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Shaunna Dandoy.``The victim is believed to be a female adult who was walking eastbound towards Obispo and 64th (Street)'' when a man ran up and began assaulting her, Dandoy said.A bystander tried to help, at which time the suspect grabbed a scooter and used it to continue attacking the woman, according to Dandoy.The suspect was last seen running west from the location on foot. Fire department personnel responded and pronounced the woman dead at the scene, Dandoy said. Her name and age were not immediately available.Homicide detectives were investigating the fatal assault. 910
LOS ANGELES (CNS) - As the use of legal and illegal fireworks around the Los Angeles area exploded this Fourth of July, fire departments saw a sharp increase in the number of calls for service, authorities said Sunday.It was the second-busiest day ever in calls for service from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, according to Dispatch Supervisor Imy McBride.The dispatchers usually field 1,000 calls on an average day, McBride said. On July 4th, they handled more than 1,600 calls, including tree, brush and roof fires.Los Angeles City firefighters responded to 1,770 calls for service from 3 a.m. July 4 to 3 a.m. Sunday, spokesman Nicholas Prange said. The department averaged 1,368 calls per day during the same period in 2019, he said.The July 4 fires included one that burned trees and the roof of a garden-style apartment building on Wilbur Avenue in Northridge with five people suffering smoke inhalation and 50 residents being displaced, Prange said.There was also a three-acre brush fire in Shadow Hills and a fire that spread from palm trees to the roof of an apartment building in Reseda.McBride and Prange said it was unclear whether the fires were related to the increase use of fireworks. 1216
LOS ANGELES (AP) — California environmental officials say a popular agricultural pesticide they say has been linked to brain damage in children will be banned after next year under an agreement reached with its manufacturer.Under the deal announced Wednesday, all California sales of chlorpyrifos will end on Feb. 6, 2020.Farmers will have until the end of 2020 to exhaust their supplies.The pesticide is used on numerous crops in the nation's largest agriculture-producing state, including alfalfa, almonds, citrus, cotton, grapes and walnuts.State regulators say the pesticide has been linked to health defects in children, including brain impairment.Officials say they are budgeting million to help manufacturers develop a safer alternative.The pesticide's manufacturer, Corteva Agriscience, says it reached the agreement "in the best interests of the affected growers." 884
LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The California Highway Patrol Friday promised focused enforcement efforts during the New Year's holiday weekend.The CHP's Maximum Enforcement Period will start at 6:01 p.m. Friday and go through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, when all available officers will be on duty, officials said.``Impairment of any kind while driving is illegal. Alcohol, cannabis or legal or illegal drugs can all affect your driving,'' CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley said. ``Impaired driving is a serious crime that can lead to an arrest, serious injury or death.''RELATED: California's repeat DUI offenders to use ignition interlocks in 2019The CHP promised to focus on impaired drivers but also watch for distracted driving, speeding and seat belt violations. LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Authorities say they have arrested a man in connection with the shooting of two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies as they sat in their squad car.District Attorney Jackie Lacy on Wednesday says attempted murder charges have been filed against 36-year-old Deonte Lee Murray. He was arrested two weeks ago in connection with a separate carjacking.The deputies suffered critical wounds in the Sept. 12 shooting which was recorded by surveillance video.They have since been released from the hospital and are recovering at home. 555
