BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday pledged to work with Indonesia to push forward the bilateral strategic partnership.     China's top legislator Wu Bangguo and top political advisor Jia Qinglin made the remarks in separate meetings with Taufik Kiemas, Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly of Indonesia. "We applaud Indonesia's long-term adherence to the one-China policy," he noted, expressing appreciation for the country's support in issues concerning Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.     The two nations, both as important nations in the Asia-Pacific region, enjoyed broad common interests, Wu said, hoping that the two sides would enhance parliamentary exchanges and cooperation to enrich the contents of bilateral ties.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, told Taufik that the China-Indonesia ties had stepped into a new phase of rapid, healthy and stable growth.     "We are ready to work with Indonesia to expand cooperation in economy, trade and culture to advance our strategic partnership," Jia said, noting that this would benefit the two peoples and help regional and world peace and development.     Jia hoped the CPPCC, the top political advisory body, and the People's Consultative Assembly of Indonesia would maintain close exchanges and learn from each other to help promote relations between the two nations.     This China trip from Dec. 6 to 9 was Taufik's first visit abroad since taking office in October this year. Taufik told Chinese leaders that this showed the importance attached by Indonesia to relations with China.     Indonesia valued the friendly and cooperative ties with China, he said, hoping that the two nations would increase pragmatic cooperation in infrastructure construction and resources exploitation.     He said the People's Consultative Assembly was ready to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the NPC and the CPPCC to contribute to comprehensive growth of Indonesia-China ties.     Taufik reiterated that his country would firmly stick to the one-China policy.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- The United States requested the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Wednesday to establish a dispute settlement panel to rule on China's export restraints on raw materials. But Chinese officials insist that they are consistent with WTO rules.     The materials at issue are: bauxite, coke, fluorspar, magnesium, manganese, silicon metal, silicon carbide, yellow phosphorus, and zinc, key inputs for numerous downstream products in the steel, aluminum, and chemical sectors across the globe.     The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) said in a statement that the raw materials are "critical to U.S. manufacturers and workers."     The USTR also said that the European Union and Mexico are joining the United States in requesting the establishment of a WTO dispute settlement panel regarding this matter.     The U.S. and the European Union requested formal consultations with China at the WTO on June 23, 2009, and Mexico filed its consultations request on August 21, 2009.     "We believe the restraints at issue in this dispute significantly distort the international market and provide preferential conditions for Chinese industries that use these raw materials," said Debbie Mesloh, a USTR spokeswoman.     "Working together with the European Union and Mexico, we tried to resolve this issue through consultations, but did not succeed. At this point, therefore, we need to move forward with the next step in the WTO dispute settlement process," Mesloh stated. "We remain open to working with China to find a mutually agreeable solution to our concerns."     But the Chinese Ministry of Commerce defended China's export policies, saying they are consistent with WTO rules.     The chief aim of China's export policies is to protect the environment and conserve natural resources, said an official with the Ministry of Commerce in June.     China has been keeping communication and contact with the U.S. and the EU over China's policy on raw material exports, the official said, adding that China will properly deal with the consultation request in accordance with WTO dispute settlement procedures.     According to the procedures, China, the U.S., the EU and Mexico have 60 days to try to resolve their dispute through consultations. If consultations fail, the U.S., the EU and Mexico could ask for a WTO panel to investigate and rule on this dispute.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday congratulated EU's top leaders elected on Thursday, vowing to further boost China-EU all-round strategic partnership.     Wen made the remarks in his meeting with a group of EU diplomats including former French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin and Hungary's ex-Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy, who were here to attend a China-EU forum.     The Belgian prime minister was unanimously elected on Thursday as the first full-time EU president and Britain's EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton as EU foreign policy chief.     "As a strategic partner of the EU, China congratulates the leaders elected and feels glad for that," Wen said.     Calling EU as an important pole of the world, Wen said the EU integration would help the 27-nation bloc to play greater role in international affairs.     He called for courage and insight of political figures of both sides, as well as support from various circles of the society to deepen China-EU relations.     "The Chinese government is ready to cement trust and deepen cooperation with EU to promote bilateral all-round strategic partnership," he added.     Some of the EU representatives told Wen both the EU and China shoulder great responsibilities in the world globalization. The two sides should not only properly settle issues in bilateral ties but also jointly respond to major global challenges such as climate change.

BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Senior officials of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) pledged here Tuesday to improve relations between the two states and parties. "As neighboring socialist countries, China and Vietnam share broad strategic interest, and are capable of improving bilateral ties," said He Guoqiang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.     During a one-hour meeting at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing, He briefed To Huy Rua, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPV Central Committee, on CPC's experiences and latest decisions on party building. BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang urged the country's railway departments to make efforts to promote safe railway transport and build quality railway projects to better serve socio-economic development.     Continuous efforts should be made to relieve railway transport capacity shortage and further expand the country's railways network, Zhang told a national railway conference.     "Although shortage of the country's passenger and goods transportation by railways has been eased to some extent, railways are still a bottleneck restricting economic development," Zhang said.     He stressed railway technology innovation, railway project quality and improvement of services for the convenience of passengers.     Zhang also urged railway departments make full preparations to cope with traffic peak during the upcoming holiday, when millions of people rush back home for the Spring Festival, China's Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 14.     In 2009, China's railways saw a passenger flow of 1.52 billion and transported 3.32 billion tonnes of freight, both breaking records. The country's railways are expected to see a record of 1.64 billion passenger trips in 2010, up 7.6 percent from last year.
