ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A municipal government in China has donated 40,000 medical-grade face masks to Maryland’s capital city amid the coronavirus pandemic.The donations from Changsha, China, were first offered to Annapolis city officials in April, when the need for the masks among public safety workers was high in the beginning of the pandemic, Annapolis City Manager David Jarrell said in a news release Tuesday.They arrived this month, with one of the boxes featuring strikers of American and Chinese flags with a message that read: “Go, City of Annapolis! Best Wishes from Changsha! True unity inspires people to work as one to overcome adversity,” The Capital Gazette reported.Another note from Yani Xia, a representative in the Chinese city’s Foreign Affairs Office, accompanied the shipments. “We sincerely wish you and everyone in Annapolis continued good health, and the fortitude to persevere during this challenging period,” Xia’s note read.Annapolis’ relationship with Changsha began under a former city administrator, according to the release. An Uber driver in Arizona said he pulled up to give a ride Easter morning and ended up with an AR-15 assault rifle in his face. Edward Martinez said two men called for a ride and while he waited at the curb, a third man came out of the house with no shirt and a gun. "He points it at me and says, 'call 9-1-1,"' said Martinez. Not knowing what was happening, Martinez started dialing and talking to the 9-1-1 dispatcher, and the guy with the gun went back inside. In the meantime, he said the two riders got in his car and told him not to worry about the guy with the gun. About that time, the man with the gun returned. "That's when he put a round in the chamber," said Martinez. "The [passenger] door was open... and then he had the weapon, it was about [half way] in the car, and I just took off."Martinez drove to a Quick Trip. He said his passengers tossed something out the window on the way and disappeared when he parked to wait for El Mirage police. An El Mirage officer ended up arresting the armed man, 25-year-old Nicholas Brasseur. Police searched his home and wrote in the police report that they found drugs and 25 AR-15 assault rifles.  "My profession is manufacturing AR-15s," Brasseur told the court at his initial appearance. The judge informed him that he would not be allowed to continue working with weapons or be in possession of any weapons while awaiting a resolution to the charges, which include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possessing or using a weapon during a drug offense.       Martinez said he reported the incident to Uber but has not received a followup call. "I'm missing work. Where's any concern? What can we do to help you? Do you need to see a counselor? Or any of that kind of stuff," said Martinez. Meanwhile, he says he doesn't know if he'll ever drive again. "Not today, not the next day," said Martinez. "Why would I want to put my life [at risk] and lose my life. I can't."An Uber spokesperson told Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix they've banned all the people involved from the Uber app and will co-operate with police.  The spokesperson said they're glad Martinez is OK and plan to follow up with him soon.  2268

As coronavirus cases begin to jump again in the United Kingdom, Prime Minster Boris Johnson announced Wednesday a nationwide ban on gatherings of more than six people. The ban goes into effect on Monday.While coronavirus cases in the UK currently pale in comparison to the spread of the virus in the US, the UK has seen a marked jump in infections. According to New York Times data, the rate of new cases has doubled from three weeks ago. Johnson’s announcement comes as the UK reported 32 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday, the most in a single day since July 29.The UK has a population of 66 million, which is nearly one-fifth the population of the United States, which reported 462 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday.Previously, the UK had a ban on all gatherings of more than 30 people.“It will be enforced by the police. And anyone breaking the rules risks being dispersed, fined and possibly arrested,” Johnson said.Johnson told reporters on Wednesday that limiting gatherings is an important step in stopping the spread of the virus.“I should stress that if we are to beat the virus, then everyone at all times should limit social contact as much as possible and minimize interactions with other households,” Johnson said. “It's safer to meet outdoors, and you should keep your distance from anyone you don't live with, even if they're close friends or family.”Since the start of the pandemic, the UK has reported more than 41,000 coronavirus-related deaths. In April, the UK was among the hardest hit nations in the world, with its per capita death rate worse than the United States. But the number of coronavirus-related deaths, which peaked at nearly 1,000 per day, quickly dropped in May. As of last week, the UK was averaging fewer than 10 coronavirus-related deaths per day.But the spike in cases has prompted Johnson to impose a stricter mandate on social gatherings.The ban allow some exceptions for workplaces, schools, funerals and weddings.A number of other nations have implemented similar, but less stringent bans on gatherings.
