SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was behind bars Wednesday in connection with a mugging that left a 73-year-old disabled woman gravely injured last week on a downtown roadside near Cortez Hill.Stanley Harris Hinton, 31, was arrested Monday on suspicion of carrying out the robbery and assault in the Core-Columbia district of San Diego, according to police. The 6-foot-3-inch, 215-pound suspect allegedly attacked Nannette Altevers, who uses a walker, near the corner of B Street and Fourth Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Friday.Patrol officers responding to a 911 call about the assault found the assailant gone and Altevers suffering from extensive upper body trauma, Lt. Matt Dobbs said. She remains hospitalized in critical condition.Due to the severity of the victim's injuries, homicide detectives have taken charge of the case, the lieutenant said.Hinton was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault, robbery and elder abuse. He was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Sept. 25. 1044

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A pick-up truck drove through a highway center divider today near Alpine, overturned and caught fire, authorities said. The crash happened at 7:26 a.m. when a Ford truck lost its brakes going eastbound on Interstate 8, overturned on westbound I-8, landed on the right shoulder and became fully engulfed, the California Highway Patrol said. The wreck started a minor brush fire. All westbound lanes of I-8 were shut down from West Willows Road to East Willows Road until 8:23 a.m., where one westbound lane was reopened, the CHP said.It was not immediately known how many people were in the truck or whether there were any injuries. 655

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con pleaded not guilty to a murder charge today for allegedly stabbing another man in an apparently random attack in a public restroom along the Pacific Beach boardwalk, 16 days after being released from prison.Martin Alvarez, 33, is accused in the Aug. 16 slaying of 39-year-old Michael Wagley, who was found mortally wounded at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16 in the lavatory at 700 Grand Avenue. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing on a bicycle following the stabbing, San Diego Police Department Lt. Andra Brown said. The lieutenant said Alvarez, who matched the suspect description, was detained in the area and later arrested on suspicion of murder. The alleged motive for the slaying was unclear, but a prosecutor said the victim had no connection to his attacker.Deputy District Attorney George Modlin called the stabbing a ``random act of murder'' in which Alvarez allegedly attacked the victim from behind, stabbing him in the neck. The prosecutor said Alvarez then threw Wagley to the ground and stabbed him several more times.Modlin said that following his release from prison, Alvarez failed to report to Post Release Community Supervision and committed the murder 16 days later. It was uncertain what crime Alvarez was serving time for, though the criminal complaint alleges he has prior San Diego County convictions for assault with a deadly weapon and robbery. In addition to murder, Alvarez faces allegations of using a knife in the slaying. He was being held without bail, but a bail review hearing was set for Friday. 1627

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An emaciated dog found Friday in Bandy Canyon remains in critical condition but has shown some signs of improvement, the San Diego Humane Society's animal care staff reported today.A county resident brought the 2-year old male pit bull mix to the Humane Society's Escondido campus after finding him extremely dehydrated and cold, with pressure sores on his hips and knees. Humane Society veterinarians are working to feed and re-hydrate the dog slowly so as not to damage his body in its current fragile state.According to the organization, it could take between seven and 10 days for the dog to turn a corner and begin to recover. Humane Society staff are hopeful that will happen."When I found him he was extremely lethargic and weak,'' said Humane Society Law Enforcement Sgt. Lauren Monreal. "He's since received fluids, some electrolytes and ... even despite his horrible condition, he wags his tail.''The organization's Law Enforcement unit opened a felony cruelty investigation on Friday into the dog's abandonment and who may be responsible. Residents can offer information leading to the responsible party's arrest by calling Humane Society Law Enforcement at (619) 299-7012.San Diego Crime Stoppers is also offering a ,000 for information leading to the person's arrest. Residents can call the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477 or visit the organization's website, sdcrimestoppers.org. 1441

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Construction crews will close the northbound Interstate 5 off-ramp at Balboa Avenue Friday for a full weekend of work to make improvements to the off-ramp and its intersection with Balboa Avenue, according to the San Diego Association of Governments. The closure will take place from 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, during which time construction crews will widen the off-ramp from one lane to two and add a traffic signal at the affected intersection. The signal will go into permanent operation on Monday when the ramp re-opens to vehicle traffic. The improvements will make it easier for motorists to access the future Balboa Avenue trolley station once it opens. The closure will necessitate lane reductions on Balboa and Garnet avenues between Mission Bay Drive and Moraga Avenue, according to SANDAG. Only one lane in each direction will be open to vehicle traffic throughout the weekend, although the schedule is subject to change. The weekend work is part of the .17 billion Mid-Coast Trolley Blue Line Extension, which includes a planned 11-mile extension of trolley service by MTS from Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego to University City. The extension will add trolley stops in Mission Bay Park, UC San Diego and Westfield UTC. SANDAG is receiving .04 billion in funding from the Federal Transit Administration to complete the project. The extension and related projects are intended to reduce traffic congestion as the county's population increases. Construction on the extension began in 2016 and is scheduled to be completed in 2021. 1582
