SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Pac-Man is the newest inductee into the Comic-Con Museum's Character Hall of Fame, the San Diego-based museum announced Thursday.Pac-Man "is being honored as the original digital game mascot for his enduring impact he has had on the video game industry and the role of storytelling in games," according to the museum, which is scheduled to partially open in Balboa Park in mid-2021.The iconic, hungry yellow circle will be the second character in the museum's hall of fame. Batman was inducted in the hall of fame's inaugural year in 2019.This year marks the 40th anniversary of Pac-Man, which is the highest- grossing video game ever made, according to the museum. As of 2016, the game had generated more than billion in revenue."We thought Pac-Man would be the perfect addition to the Museum Character Hall of Fame because he inspires a sense of nostalgia in many of us and even though he is turning 40, he is still highly relevant in pop culture today," said Eddie Ibrahim, senior director of programming for the Comic-Con Museum. "Characters tell the stories of pop culture and what better time, when we are more digital than ever, to honor our first digital character."A live virtual induction ceremony will be held on Dec. 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. The ceremony will consist of a combination of interactive live stream elements and pre-recorded content and videos. For more information or to register to attend the induction, residents can visit https://donate.comic-conmuseum.org/pacman.Though the Comic-Con Museum is on track to open its doors at the 68,000-square foot Federal Building in the park's Palisades section in mid-2021, the museum will not be completed until 2024, with portions of it opening in phases until then.Pac-Man was created by Toru Iwatani and first released in Tokyo in May 1980. The game made its debut in the United States in October 1980.It took nearly 20 years for anyone to complete a perfect game -- finishing with no lives lost and the maximum number of points from each level, according to the museum."Pac-Man's enduring popularity and relevance speak volumes to his position as an icon in the video game and pop culture worlds," said Dennis Lee, director of brand marketing at BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. "As Pac-Man enters his 40s, he's still entertaining millions of fans around the globe with new video games and products featuring his likeness. We look forward to Pac-Man delivering more fun for everyone for years to come." 2503

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Tempering the excitement generated by COVID-19 vaccines, Gov. Gavin Newsom Tuesday offered a grim reminder that the disease remains deadly, saying the state has ordered 5,000 more body bags for distribution to morgues in three counties, including San Diego."This is a deadly disease, a deadly pandemic, and we're in the middle of it right now," Newsom said. "We're near the end, but we're in the middle of the most acute peak as it relates to what we refer to as the third wave -- the third and what we hope is the final wave of this disease."Newsom said 142 coronavirus-related deaths were reported statewide in the past 24 hours. Over the past week, the state averaged 163 deaths per day -- up from 41 per day one month ago."Think about if we continue down the path we're on, what that Jan. 14th number might look like if we do not do what we need to do, which is not just to avail ourselves when we can to the vaccine, but to continue to wear these face coverings and minimize mixing to the extent possible because of what's occurred in the last 30 days," Newsom said.According to the governor, the state has 60 53-foot refrigerated storage units on standby at counties and hospitals across California for use is local facilities become overwhelmed by virus fatalities."We just had to order 5,000 additional body bags ... and we just distributed them down to San Diego, Los Angeles, Inyo counties," he said. "That should be sobering. I don't want ... to scare folks, but this is a deadly disease. And we need to be mindful of where we are in this current journey together to the vaccine. We are not at the finish line yet." 1652

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Friday identified a 44-year-old man who was found fatally wounded inside a vehicle in the Encanto area of San Diego. The man was identified as Gilbert Lee Johnson, of San Diego, the San Diego Police Department reported.Officers found Johnson about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Varney and Theodore drives, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department. After police received multiple calls of gunshots heard in the area, officers reported finding him slumped over in the vehicle suffering from at least one apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs."It appears the victim was in the area talking to an acquaintance when another vehicle pulled up near the victim. The suspect got out of his vehicle and fired several rounds at the victim," Dobbs said. "The suspect then got back into this vehicle and drove away.'The suspect was wearing dark clothing and seen driving westbound on Varney in a white four-door vehicle, he said. The San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit urged anyone with any information regarding the shooting to call them at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1236

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Parole was granted Wednesday for the man who killed a 20-year-old college student and pizza deliveryman in 1995 when he was a 14-year-old gang member.Tony Hicks, now 37, was the first youth in California to be tried as an adult under a law adopted in 1995 that allowed juveniles as young as 14 to be tried as adults for murder. He pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Tariq Khamisa and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. He has served 23 years behind bars.Wednesday's decision, made by the state parole board, now goes to the governor's office for possible approval.Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed Senate Bill 1391, which eliminates the ability to try a defendant under the age of 16 as an adult for any violent crime. Those convicted under the new law will be held in locked juvenile facilities instead of adult prisons."If this law (SB 1391) had been in effect in 1995, Tony (Hicks) would have been prosecuted in Juvenile Court and paroled many years ago,'' said Azim Khamisa, the victim's father. ``The other two individuals involved in the crime were sentenced in Juvenile Court. Tony made a mistake. He has atoned for it in many ways. He has paid his debt to society. It is time for him to be it in many ways. He has paid his debt to society. It is time for him to be released."Tasreen Khamisa also supports the release of her brother's killer. She said that when he was 16, an immature Hicks was incarcerated with some of the most hardened adult offenders in the state at Folsom Prison.According to spokeswoman Tanya Sierra, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office has not written a letter opposing Hicks' parole, nor has it submitted a letter in favor of his release. District Attorney Summer Stephan has the option of taking a position at the hearing, which she is scheduled to attend, along with Deputy District Attorney Richard Sachs, Sierra said.In the wake of his son's murder, Azim Khamisa reached out to Hicks' grandfather in the spirit of forgiveness and founded the Tariq Khamisa Foundation, which ``is dedicated to teaching and inspiring forgiveness, hope and peace in youth and setting them on a path towards opportunity,'' according to the San Diego nonprofit's mission statement.``We plan to bring Tony on to the staff at TKF where he can share his powerful message about the consequences of violence and the benefits of restorative justice with thousands of youth,'' Tasreen Khamisa said. ``The bottom line is that our kids need Tony. He will have a powerful voice in helping stop youth violence.''In preparation for his second chance at freedom, Hicks has earned his GED and college credits toward an associate's degree, according to the foundation. He has also been writing a blog for the TKF website, answering students' questions. The Khamisas traveled to a San Luis Obispo prison to attend the state parole board hearing. 2908
