The US economy officially entered a recession in February as CDC leaders predicted that the US would experience community spread of the virus. There is no sign the US is poised to exit out of a recession.“There are other areas and we’ve talked about (a shutdown): medical problems and everything else that get put on hold,” Mnuchin said. “I think it was very prudent what the president did, but I think we’ve learned a lot.”Chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell told reporters on Wednesday that getting the economy back to where it was before the coronavirus began to spread could take time.“My assumption is there will be a significant chunk, well into the millions -- I don't want to give you a number because it's going to be a guess -- but well, well into the millions of people who don't get to go back to their old job and in fact there may not be a job in the industry for them for some time, there will eventually be but it could be some years before we get back to those people finding jobs,” Powell said. "When people lose a job, they can find a job in their own industry, that's the fastest way and no other people in the industry, different kinds of jobs, that's usually the fastest.“If you have to go and start over again it's much harder and that's where you lose people who fall out of the labor force and is very tough on their lives, we all know people.”Unemployment reached its highest level since the Great Depression in April. He said he was able to install the chute on his porch in 20 minutes.“If this candy chute makes things easier or safer, AND gives those with mobility challenges more of a chance to participate, then what's the harm? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, ya' know,” Beattie wrote.Beattie has created a Facebook group where he hopes to share ideas with others this fall ahead of Halloween. As the wildfire raged nearby, Whitney Vaughan and her husband had just enough time to grab a laundry basket of dirty clothes and some pictures before fleeing their home in Paradise, California.Vaughan could hear screams and explosions nearby Thursday as she and her husband got in their car and drove away. But they soon found themselves trapped with other evacuees in standstill traffic.The Camp Fire was closing in."The flames were whipping and spreading so fast," Vaughan told CNN. "It began to jump the road. There wasn't anywhere to go."People began to panic, Vaughan said. In the chaos, one driver backed up and slammed the front of Vaughan's SUV. 661

  

Automakers are racing to develop driverless cars, putting increasingly complex technology on the road despite concerns from safety experts and the National Transportation Safety Board about a lack of regulations.Unlike rules for the design of a seatbelt or airbag, the federal guidelines for automated vehicle systems are voluntary. The U.S. Department of Transportation says keeping rules at a minimum will speed up the introduction of life-saving technology, a goal made all the more urgent as traffic deaths climbed again last year to 37,461, with 94 percent of those caused by human error.That lack of mandatory rules for self-driving cars has given automakers and technology companies the green light to police themselves, said Jackie Gillan, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. The group is calling for the government to issue mandatory safety standards for driverless cars.“Before we introduce this technology we need to have some assurance and accountability by the industry that this technology is not going to kill or injure consumers,” Gillan said.The National Transportation Safety Board makes recommendations after investigating major transportation incidents. The board recently called on DOT to issue new safety rules after its investigation of a May 2016 fatal crash of a Tesla Model S operating on autopilot near Williston, Fla. The Tesla slammed into a tractor-trailer, its cameras and automatic emergency braking system failing to spot the blank side of the truck against the white sky.It was the first known deadly wreck of a car driving with that level of automated sophistication. The NTSB said the driver relied too heavily on the car’s traffic-aware cruise control system and autosteering feature, but also blamed Tesla’s autopilot for allowing the driver to not interact with the car for prolonged periods of time.Investigators found the driver had his hands on the wheel for only 25 seconds during the 37 minutes the car was on autopilot. After the crash, Tesla updated its software that requires drivers touch the wheel every so often when the car is driving itself to ensure a human is paying attention to the road. Now if a driver repeatedly fails to touch the wheel, he or she will “strike out” and cause the car to slow down and stop in its lane with its hazard lights on, disabling autopilot for the remainder of the trip. 2378
