TOKYO, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said Tuesday that Japan will seek to take a less inward- looking stance when it comes to diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific region.Specifically he said that Japan will look to enhance diplomatic ties with China based on mutually beneficial goals."With China, this year marks the 40th anniversary of normalizing diplomatic ties. BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Materialism could be harmful to marriage, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Couple & Relationship Therapy Thursday.The researchers collected online "relationship assessment" questionnaires from 1,734 U.S. married couples.The questionnaire covered the topics about the couples' marital satisfaction, conflict patterns, marital communication, and marriage stability, and so on.Non-materialistic couples were about 10 to 15 percent better than those materialistics in their marital satisfaction, marriage stability and conflict levels, according to the study."What we found was a general pattern that materialism seems to be harmful to marriage," said study researcher Jason Carroll, a professor of family life at Brigham Young University.It didn't matter whether the materialistic spouse was the man or the woman, he added.However, materialism is not simply black-or-white: some couples can pursue their fortune and keep their relationship strong at the same time, the researcher suggested.But breaking their materialistic thought would be helpful for most couples, Carroll concluded.

BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- A total of 14,976 cases of medical disputes were handled by the country's emerging third-party mediation organizations, with over 80 percent of them being successfully settled, said Vice Health Minister Zhang Mao.Zhang told Xinhua recently in an exclusive interview that China has to date set up 1,358 third-party mediation organizations to settle medical disputes.The third-party mediation organizations have come into being since late 2009 which usually hire retired doctors, medical experts and lawyers to bridge the communication gaps between doctors and patients and direct patients to resort to legal means in settling medical disputes.The third-party mediation system for medical disputes is a latest reform to ease doctor-patient tension that sometimes escalate into violence.Such incidents erupted several times this year, and in an extreme case in September, a 43-year-old surgeon in Beijing Tongren Hospital was stabbed by a patient into serious injury. The attack was believed to have been triggered by a medical dispute in which the patient alleged that the surgeon had committed malpractice during an operation.

BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) - Orthopaedic experts have warned that China should improve its prevention of orthopaedic illnesses as its population ages.Osteoporosis, bone fractures and joint diseases, to which elderly people are particularly susceptible, have surged as serious health concerns, said Feng Huicheng, surgeon-in-chief of a leading Chinese orthopaedics hospital, at the Sixth International Congress of the Chinese Orthopaedic Association (COA) Sunday in Beijing.According to China's latest census in 2010, the number of people aged 60 and over stood at 177.65 million and accounted for more than 13 percent of the country's total 1.3 billion population."Orthopaedic diseases pose a great threat to the elderly, and they'll only grow more serious as we have a large population that is aging," said Dr. Feng from the No. 309 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army."The younger generation should start to be concerned with their health now, particularly calcium loss, to prevent osteoporosis when getting old.".A report issued by the International Osteoporosis Foundation this year shows that about 70 million people in China now suffer from the condition and that number may leap to 286 million by 2020.H.K.T.Raza, president of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association, said at the conference that the prevention of osteoporosis should begin when people are still young."Osteoporosis is best prevented by regular exercises and good dietary controls. All that has to be done early in life, maybe between 20 and 30, to prevent the disease," he said.According to the World Health Organization, osteoporosis remains one of the primary threats to the health of the middle-aged and elderly.Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time.
