LOS ANGELES (CNS) - County public health officials said have ordered the continued closure of LA Apparel's manufacturing facilities in South Los Angeles, announcing that more than 300 workers have been confirmed with the coronavirus and four have died. The company's manufacturing complex on 59th Street was originally closed June 27 after inspectors found "flagrant" violations of infection- control protocols and the company "failed to cooperate" with the county's investigation of what were then about 150 total infections.According to the county Department of Public Health, an official order was issued Thursday mandating the "continuous closure" of the facility.Officials with LA Apparel could not be reached for comment Friday when county officials announced the extended closure."The death of four dedicated garment workers is heartbreaking and tragic," public health director Barbara Ferrer said in a statement. "Business owners and operators have a corporate, moral and social responsibility to their employees and their families to provide a safe work environment that adheres to all of the health officer directives -- this responsibility is important, now more than ever, as we continue to fight this deadly virus."Public health officials said Friday three workers from the plant died in early June, and one more died this month. The agency began investigating conditions at the plant on June 19 after being notified by a "concerned health care provider."According to the department, investigators asked the company for a list of all employees so it could be compared with testing results, but the company failed to provide it.In late June, inspectors found violations at the facility of distancing requirements and infection-control protocols, according to the department, noting that the company was using cardboard as a barrier between workers. On July 4, the company sent the department an "incomplete list" of employees, and by then 198 positive cases had been reported. But as of Friday, that number had risen to more than 300, according to the public health agency.Health officials said that despite the company being ordered closed in late June, LA Apparel reopened the factory with new employees, and company officials tried to prevent health inspectors from entering the facility. 2309

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Flames raced up a Pacific Palisades hillside Monday, chewing through trees and brush as the fire marched toward multimillion- dollar homes, forcing the precautionary evacuation of about 200 homes. The fire was reported about 10:40 a.m. near the 500 block of North Palisades Drive, with the flames driven upward by the terrain, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Authorities said there was no wind in the area, even as gusty conditions persisted in other parts of the Southland. By mid-afternoon, the fire was estimated at 40 acres, and no structures had been damaged. One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and a civilian reported mild respiratory distress, according to LAFD Assistant Chief Patrick Butler, who said both were taken to hospitals. Shortly after the blaze erupted, some homeowners could be seen using garden hoses in an effort to beat back flames nearing their backyards, but they were clearly outmatched by the towering fire, which threatened homes along Vista Grande Drive and Charmel Lane. As the flames advanced rapidly, some residents were seen running down their driveways, giving way to arriving structure-protection fire crews. Early Monday afternoon, mandatory evacuation orders were issued for an area between Charmel Lane and Bienveneda Avenue, from Lachman Lane on the north to Merivale Lane on the south. An evacuation center was established at the Palisades Recreation Center, 851 Alma Real Drive. Officials said the evacuations were ordered due to both fire and smoke potential in the area. Even without wind, embers floating into the neighborhood from the flames below set off at least one fire in shrubs separating a pair of homes, and firefighters rushed into the area to douse the flames before any structures were damaged. Crews in water-dropping helicopters were helping attack the flames in the difficult-to-access hillside area, LAFD Capt. Cody Weireter said at an early afternoon media briefing at a command post at LAFD Fire Station 23. Fire officials also called in a pair of fixed-wing Super Scooper aircraft. ``This is an extremely challenging fire for hand crews,'' Weireter said. ``If you look at the firefighters, they're essentially clawing their way up this hillside with rocks coming down on them.'' There was no immediate word on a possible cause of the fire, Weireter said. He said it was not known if the fire originated at a homeless encampment. ``We do not have a cause, and while that subject comes up a lot, I don't have a cause for it right now,'' Weireter said. ``We have arson investigators on scene, looking to see what the cause and the point of origin is.'' He said the blaze started at the base of Palisades Drive and burned through about 18 acres within 15 minutes. ``The main message for the public is to kind of stay out of this area,'' Weireter said. ``We will have an evacuation center set up at the Palisades Recreation Center, and if you need information, we will also have a public information officer there.'' Weireter said firefighters were concerned about the forecast for high winds later this week. ``The forecast is going to be (for) increased winds by Thursday,'' Weireter said. ``That's why we're going to put a lot of resources on it to make sure this fire is wind-tested, because the winds will be coming back on Thursday.'' 3346

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The California Democratic Party has spent more than 0,000 in legal costs tied to three lawsuits alleging discrimination and sexual misconduct by its former chair, Eric Bauman. The Los Angeles Times reports Saturday that the party has paid 0,000 in attorney fees and 8,348 in legal settlements in the three cases.Bauman resigned as party chairman last year amid multiple allegations of excessive drinking and sexual harassment. The lawsuits alleged a culture of sexual misconduct that was "well-known and apparently tolerated" by top party officials. In a statement, the state party said "it is at its best when it lives up to our values. One of those values is treating people fairly."Two other cases against Bauman and the party are pending. 775

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Three men and three women were arrested for allegedly toppling and vandalizing a statue of President George Washington in Grand Park, authorities said Saturday. The vandalism occurred about 6:40 p.m. Thursday in the downtown park at 200 N. Grand Ave. in the Civic Center, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.Officers monitoring a nearby protest saw people pulling on red bands tied to the statue's neck, police said. The statue broke off of its base and fell to the ground, where it was spray-painted as the six suspects and others cheered and celebrated, police said. The suspects then hid nearby to change their clothes and conceal items in their backpacks to avoid arrest, police said. But police were waiting when they left the protest at Spring and Temple streets and the six suspects were arrested.Officers recovered items during the arrest including a gas mask, laser pointer, helmet, goggles, arm protectors and change of clothing, police said. The suspects were identified as Elizabeth Brookey, 19, of Burbank; Christopher Woodard, 33, of Los Angeles; Anna Asher, 28, of North Hollywood; Emma Juncosa, 23, of Los Angeles; Andrew Johnson, 22, of Glendale and Barham Lashley, 30, of North Hollywood. The case will be presented to the District Attorney's office for consideration of felony filings, police said. 1351

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Kim Kardashian West is speaking out about Kanye West’s mental health and asking the public for “compassion and empathy” as her husband struggles with bipolar disorder.Over the past several days, the self-declared presidential candidate has caused a stir with his comments at a campaign event in South Carolina, as well as on social media. At a rally, West delivered an eccentric campaign introduction speech in which he proposed a million payout to each new mother and decried Harriet Tubman for her work on the Underground Railroad. West's comments about one of the most respected figures in American history drew of opposition from some in the crowd and those who later heard his comments. In a series of rambling social media posts, West suggested he was resisting intervention efforts by his wife, her family and medical professionals. In a series of since-deleted Twitter posts Tuesday, West also wrote that he’s been considering divorcing his wife. The reality star and beauty mogul released a statement on social media Wednesday, saying she’s speaking out about West’s battle with bipolar disorder because of the stigma and misconceptions about mental health. 1196
