SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In what's being hailed by organizers as the greatest gathering of surf legends San Diego has ever seen, the first members of San Diego's Surfing Hall of Fame will be inducted Tuesday night.The ceremony set for Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach will celebrate 14 individuals who have made pioneering contributions to San Diego's surfing culture. "These innovators and pioneers have emerged everywhere that waves break. In this regard, San Diego has been particularly blessed," organizers write. "Our 70 miles of coastline have produced some of the most innovative shapers and wave stylists in the sport. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In anticipation of Fire Prevention Week, Cal Fire is urging Californians to pre-plan for the worst case scenario.According to Cal Fire, homes today burn faster than ever, leaving just minutes to escape once the smoke alarm sounds.This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “look, listen and learn.” In support of the week, the agency is asking Californians to develop a fire plan and practice it.RELATED: Woman, mad at ex-boyfriend, accused of sparking massive Maryland apartment fireCal Fire offers tips on making the plan, such as checking to make sure fire alarms are working and making sure there are two ways out of every room like a door and window.Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of house fires, Cal Fire says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jonathan Goldwasser was one of the first business owners to set up shop inside One Paseo in Del Mar Heights.He opened the Parakeet Cafe when One Paseo’s retail area launched in March 2019 - and followed that up a few months later with Juice Crafters.He says business is of course best when the plaza is full.However, One Paseo has been anything but full since March, when coronavirus restrictions went into effect.“This has been hard,” Goldwasser said. “We went from maybe 20 employees to four.”Things, however, changed this week, when One Paseo fully reopened its retail center. On Thursday, there were people sitting at its socially distant tables and chairs, while shoppers in masks walked down its courtyard.“Little by little we are hoping that we will get back to where we were before COVID,” Goldwasser said, noting he’s back up to about 20 workers.About 25% of the center’s 40-plus businesses are mom-and-pops that rely on foot traffic.Juice Crafters closed entirely and Parakeet Cafe was reduced to takeout and delivery, sales going down 80%. They’ve since recovered and are now off 40% from pre-coronavirus levels.“Little by little we are hoping that we will get back to where we were before COVID,” Goldwasser said.The City Council approved One Paseo, a residential, retail and office complex in 2015. However, a referendum from nearby residents and the mall across the street ensued. Developer Kilroy scaled back the center to its current 0 million version, which opened last year just south of Del Mar Heights Road.Now that it’s open, there are social distancing rules in place. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a move to help shed the mounting costs of a real estate deal gone wrong, the City of San Diego says it is stopping lease payments on the sharply criticized 101 Ash Street building.The city sent a letter to Cisterra Development, which brokered the real estate deal, that it will be "suspending further lease payments for the 1010 Ash Street building," starting with the Sept. 1 payment. The letter adds that the city will not be making any lease payments "until these issues are fairly resolved.""The City has lost use of the building due, in part, to direct physical loss and damage to the premises, including widespread and negligent disturbance of asbestos," the city's letter reads.RELATED: Options and possible consultation costs for vacant buildingThe property at 101 Ash St. has sat vacant in downtown San Diego for most of the last four years. As it remains empty and unused, taxpayers are paying a daily bill to the tune of ,000.The city intended to move 1,100 city employees into the building, but officials soon discovered problem after problem to the site's 19 floors. In December 2019, the city finally moved workers in, only to vacate them a month later when the county detected traces of asbestos.The building was purchased by the city in 2016 in an approved lease-to-own agreement valued at million.RELATED: City leaders vote for updates on 101 Ash Street as costs mountLast month, a letter obtained by ABC 10News showed the city was considering proposals for additional services including bare requirements to reoccupy the building, fire/life/safety recommendations, and potentially demolishing and replacing the existing building. It appears you have documents that are not final and should not be treated as such."In August, City Council leaders voted 5-4 to request monthly updates on the status of the building and costs for several next steps options by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, including putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursuing a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely.
