Dr. Jose Nieves has been a critical care physician on the frontlines as a hospital intensivist, working at two hospitals in South Jersey--Jefferson Washington Township and Jefferson Cherry Hill hospitals.“When this all first started, we knew things were starting to pick up in Seattle and New York, and you felt it coming down our way,” recalled Dr. Nieves.When the pandemic first struck in the United States, the doctor felt fortunate, because his hospital system had a chance to gather enough PPE gear, create a plan, and brace for it. However, when the surge started in his hospitals, he realized all the planning still could not prepare healthcare workers on the frontlines for what they were dealing with.“It was pretty terrifying,” said Dr. Nieves, “A lot of the stuff we had prepped and talked about in our own little training sessions, you know, was very much kind of like, I wouldn’t say thrown out the door, but it was a lot of rushed implementation of stuff we had never done before."As he would be working on one patient with COVID-19 symptoms, another would walk in. There were days when five potentially COVID-19 positive patients with severe symptoms were walking in at the same time. Physicians were working around the clock to try to save lives while trying to learn about the virus.“The people that were at home were just researching trying to throw data at the people that were in, and when you were in shift and they were out, they were doing the same thing,” said NievesDespite all their efforts, there were days they couldn’t save everyone, and those were the hardest. For Dr. Nieves and his team, the loss of a pregnant mother and her unborn child was the toughest.“Having that traumatic event occur, at an already high stressful level, the staff really had to be gathered around and supported, because people were in tears. It was devastating,” he explained.On top of that, he also couldn’t go home and get a much-needed comforting hug from his girlfriend, for fear of exposing her to the virus.“That, for me, started to hammer it home; that there really was no break from this,” Nieves added.Having no break from the virus coupled social distancing needed to curb its wrath, it was taking a toll on many healthcare workers around the country.“The toll for some people at some points was that they didn’t think that they could do this anymore, that this wasn’t going to be their profession any further and that is always hard to see,” said Dr. Nieves.Jefferson Health leaders saw the toll the pandemic was taking on staff and stepped in early on, leading town halls for workers to vent and offering counseling. Other hospital systems around the country are now doing the same. Seeing the toll the pandemic has had on healthcare workers, Dr. Nieves knows first-hand how important that is and will be for so many on the frontlines of this pandemic.“Doctors that you saw last year are not going to be the same mentally and emotionally in the coming years,” Dr. Nieves explained. 3007

(KGTV) - 10News got to ride along with the CHP Thursday in the middle of “Distracted driving awareness month.”Despite new laws, crashes attributed to distracted driving went up between 2013 and 2015 by nearly 12 percent.“It’s been a law for so long now, there’s not many people that don’t know you’re not supposed to have your cell phone in your hands,” said Officer Travis Garrow.But he said people who he pulls over are often confused if they had been using their phone at a red light. That is still illegal he says.“Our message is just to put the phones away, just turn them off. Put them in the center console, put them in the glove box,” he said. “Somewhere that won’t distract you.”The cost of a distracted driving ticket is determined by a judge, but first time offenders typically pay around 0. (KGTV) - The owners of the Cottonwood Golf Club in El Cajon have filed an application with the county to convert the property into a sand mine.Details were revealed at the Valle del Oro community planning group meeting earlier this month.The proposal calls for a three-phase mining operation over 10 years.The first phase would take place on the course west of the Steele Canyon bridge, which has already been closed to golfers.Sand is needed as a component of concrete, which has become scarcer during the construction boom of the past decade.The mine would produce a maximum of 570,000 tons a year, creating an estimated 170 heavy truck round trips a day from the site.The property is owned by Beverly Hills real estate agent Michael Schlesinger, who also owns the shuttered golf courses at Stoneridge Country Club and Escondido Country Club.10News reached out to EnviroMine, the consulting company involved in the plan. Eight college football games scheduled this weekend have been canceled due to the spread of the coronavirus. Among them, the championship game between unbeaten Coastal Carolina and Top 25 Louisiana-Lafayette was called off.The Sun Belt Conference canceled the contest because of a positive COVID-19 test from a member of Coastal Carolina, which resulted in an entire position group being forced to quarantine in order to follow protocol.“We are very disappointed that the championship game cannot be played, but we are so proud of all of the players and staff members and their hard work during this truly challenging season," said Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill. "We will honor both teams as 2020 Sun Belt Conference Co-Champions."Coastal Carolina defeated Louisiana in October by a 30-27 margin.Of the eight college football games canceled this weekend, five include a Top 25 team.The upcoming college football weekend features several big matchups that will determine the four teams that will be invited to the College Football Playoff. (KGTV) - The City of El Cajon is days away from unveiling their new million dollar animal shelter to the public and gave 10News a sneak peek on Tuesday.The new shelter is double the size of the current facility, which was built in the 1950's, and features state-of-the-art amenities.The city believes it will dramatically improve the adoption experience for East County residents."With more room comes more ability to provide the standard of care expected for these types of animals," said Dirk Epperson, Director of Public Works for the City of El Cajon.The facility has a medical center and operating room as well as a full-service grooming station.There will also be several 'get to know you rooms' where potential adopters can get one-on-one time with the animals.Epperson says efficiency is a theme in the new facility, making it easier and more environmentally-friendly for shelter employees to do their jobs. The grand opening is Saturday, June 2 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m and adoption fees will be offered for all animals.The shelters will be closed from Tuesday, May 29 through Friday, June 1. However, special arrangements can be made for residents needing to drop off stray dogs or claim a pet.   1250
