EL CAJON (KGTV) - After 50 years of service, the well-known San Diego Highway Man is retiring. Thomas Weller has been helping thousands of people stuck on the side of the road since 1966. He tells 10News he started helping after a man helped him in a blizzard when he was a teenager living in Illinois.“I was on my way home about one or two in the morning and the blizzard put me off the road into a snow bank," said Weller.Weller says he never forgot that moment and hoped to be that saving grace for many others. Turns out he tells us he’s lost track of how many people he’s helped.“More than ten thousand, it's just I never keep track.” Weller had a stroke back in March and since then decided it’s best given his limited capabilities to retire.“I’ve lost my strength and my agility, not my judgment yet because I’m still driving.” He tells 10News it’s for the best that he retires because of how increasingly dangerous distracted driving has made the roads."It’s just extremely dangerous out there, more so now than it used to be.”While he is giving up one of his favorite passions in life, he isn’t giving up his outlook on life, “the most beautiful compensations of this life you cannot sincerely help another without helping yourself in the bargain.” 1266

DOWNEY, Calif. (AP) — A man suspected of gunning down a liquor store owner near Los Angeles leaned out a car window during a chase and blasted away with a handgun before being dragged wounded from the car Friday.There was no word on his condition as he was taken away in an ambulance.He is believed to be the gunman who walked into a Downey liquor store on Tuesday night and shot down Gurpreet Singh, 44, of Cerritos, Sgt. Mark Haxton said.Police have said nothing was taken from the store and there was no immediate word on a motive for the attack.On Friday afternoon, police and Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies began chasing a black Toyota Prius in Downey, southeast of Los Angeles.The high-speed chase stretched along a freeway and surface streets, during which video showed a passenger in a black T-shirt lean halfway out of the front passenger's window and fire two-handed at pursuing patrol cars.Video showed the man using a distinctive long-barreled revolver strikingly similar to one that was used in the store killing.The chase ended at about 3 p.m. in neighboring Vernon when traffic trapped the car and the passenger again fired. A car behind the Prius managed to back away, and police who pulled up in the next lane riddled the Prius with gunfire, shattering windows.A short time later, a bloodied woman driver got out and surrendered. There was no immediate word on her condition.The street near a railroad track was emptied, and sheriff's SWAT teams were called in. Two armored vehicles blocked in the Prius.During a standoff that lasted more than an hour, authorities rolled a robot up to the open driver's door to peer inside the car and later fired two flash-bang grenades into the vehicle.When the man inside didn't get out, a police dog was sent in to pull at him. Dr. Christina Blasey Ford has been nominated for a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Distinguished Alumna Award for "speaking truth to power" by going public with sexual assault allegations against then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh."What Dr. Blasey Ford did on September 27, 2018 was something that was extraordinary in how ordinary it was: she told the truth about a sexual assault she experienced when she was fifteen years old at the hands of Judge Brett Kavanaugh," wrote UNC English professor Dr. Jennifer Ho in the letter nominating Ford, speaking about the California professor's testimony last month in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee.Ford, who graduated from UNC with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1988, accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a house party when the two were in high school. Kavanaugh has denied all allegations against him.Both Ford and Kavanaugh testified before the committee, prompting a weeklong FBI investigation and hundreds of activist protesters on Capitol Hillbefore the Senate confirmed Kavanaugh by?a 50-48 vote Saturday afternoon."Dr. Blasey Ford giving her testimony, speaking truth to power, was an inspiration for so many of us," Ho wrote. Dunkin' Donuts is chowing down on the gluten-free craze.The company introduced its first-ever gluten-free bakery product: a fudge brownie. It's available in all of Dunkin's 8,500 US stores beginning Monday.Dunkin' said in a statement it recognizes "the importance of providing alternative choices for people with dietary restrictions or who choose a gluten-free diet."Gluten-free food has soared in popularity, projected to rake in billion in sales by 2020, a 20% increase from 2015, according to food industry research company Packaged Facts.
