SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The upcoming San Diego Blood Bank's blood drive brings those impacted by the donations of others into focus.One of those people brought into focus is Bryan Caraveo. Bryan was hit by a dump truck while riding his bike to work on National Bike to Work Day.Due to the accident, Bryan suffered a traumatic brain injury, collapsed lung, several broken ribs and a broken nose, clavicle and vertebrae.Bryan underwent two surgeries that required several blood transfusions, according to the blood bank.RELATED: San Diego Blood Bank partners with Westfield, ABC10 to host 'The Gift of Health'In describing the first moments he woke up in the hospital and realized what had happened Bryan said, “It was a matter of realizing that I was awake somewhere I didn’t know where I was or how I got there.”Bryan’s life was in part saved thanks to people who donated blood to the San Diego Blood Bank.“It makes me feel great because I know that at some point there were people who donated that helped me,” said Bryan.Bryan now frequents the blood bank to give back to those who gave him back his life.He also shared some advice for those on the fence about making a blood donation. “Take a look at your family and friends that are around you and imagine that in an hour they need blood. Are you willing to give a pint of blood to save their life? If you’re willing to give, you know, your family and friends a pint of blood, what about somebody else?” 1470

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park is facing a setback after thieves broke into the theater.According to San Diego Police, an unknown suspect or suspects forced their way into the building between Oct. 17 and 19. The thieves ransacked two separate, secured structures on the property.A number of high-end television production systems, autographed guitars, studio cameras, and other items were stolen. “The doors were physically broken down,” said Steve Stopper, founder of Save Starlight. “There’s been a lot of vandalism and theft and they had to have been here a long, long time.”Stopper said his foundation has been working for five years to bring life back to the theater that closed down in 2012. The City of San Diego has offered support to his organization.Repairs were being completed after a tree came crashing down on the Starlight Bowl months ago, lifting asphalt in the parking lot and crushing part of the building.“This is definitely kicking us back to almost a starting point again,” said Stopper.Security cameras and alarms were turned off as repairs to the building were underway.Stopper said the items stolen were worth well over ,000. Many, including the autographed guitars, were set to be auctioned off at a gala next year in an effort to raise money for the revitalization project.“We need someone to step up and help us,” said Stopper. “We need new options for the future. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is joining the effort to make more affordable housing. The MTS Board of Directors recently greenlit a new 410-unit housing development at the Grantville trolley station. 156 of the units will be affordable and 254 will be market rate ‘student-oriented’ apartments. MTS is partnering with developers Affirmed Housing and Greystar on the project. It is estimated the total population housed on the planned trolley station property will be 1,049 people. The development would be built on top of the current parking lot. The developers will be making their own parking spaces on the site and MTS will be adding 96 replacement parking spots, according to transit officials. In a statement on the prospective parking concerns MTS wrote, “we average about 80 to 120 commuters per weekday that use the park and ride, so we are in the wheelhouse of demand.” MTS says it is currently looking into developing four more of its stations into similar housing in downtown, El Cajon and Chula Vista. Construction is set to begin June 2020 and finish by June 2022. 1116
