(KGTV) - A fundraising campaign has been started to help an Alpine fire victim who gave up his chance to save his RV to help others.Jesus Mendoza returned home from work late Saturday afternoon to a towering wall of black and orange. Minutes later, fire crews arrived to tell him he had to evacuate."The smoke was really black, looked like an explosion behind the hillside," said Mendoza.For the past few years, he's been living in his RV on a property on Hidden Glen Road. He's been helping his landlord and friend since her husband passed away last year"She let me stay there. Made myself a promise that she comes first," said Mendoza.When it came time to evacuate, Mendoza says he helped his friend find boxes to pack, before helping round up her dog, cat, and 18 chickens from around her house. He then went to the home of a neighbor, who also needed help."She wasn't home. Helped retrieve her valuables, two dogs, and her vehicle," said Mendoza.The 40 minutes he spent helping would cost him. The RV needed gas and a battery, but he ran out of time. He and his landlord evacuated as the flames moved in. The next day, a neighbor sent him a video. Though his friend's home was spared, his RV was burned, along with his belongings. He had only grabbed a few photos of his kids and some clothes from the hamper. Also destroyed: his truck and a 1968 Ford Falcon he was restoring for his son. Remarkably, Mendoza says he's doing fine."Not upset, because I'm here, and those are just things," said Mendoza.Mendoza, who is a tree trimmer, says he is worried about losing all of his tools and climbing equipment. His friends starting a GoFundMe campaign. As of Thursday afternoon, it had raised more than ,700. Mendoza says he's beyond grateful."My mom taught me to treat others with the most respect, and it will come back to me. A woman has been arrested after allegedly trying to suffocate her 7-month-old son.Authorities said they took 23-year-old Jennifer Sandor, of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, into custody and charged her with attempted criminal homicide after she allegedly tried to suffocate her son, who was a patient at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.Sandor had taken her baby to the hospital for unexplained medical episodes that left the child blue and limp.On Friday, staff at the hospital said they witnessed Sandor use her hands to cover her son’s mouth and nose, preventing the baby from breathing.Reports stated the child was in obvious distress. They added he was struggling to free himself.Authorities said Sandor released the child only after staff intervened.         Sandor was being held in lieu of a 0,000 bond. 860

A woman claims she suffered a small cut on her finger from the nail salon she's been going to for more than a decade. Two weeks later, she found herself in the hospital having surgery due to a major infection, and there's a chance she may have to have her finger amputated. The image of Maria Luisa Gerardo's finger is extremely graphic — a wound that goes all the way down to the bone. "I cover my face when they come in here and take (the bandage) off because I don't wanna see it," said Gerardo. "I don't. I'm scared."Gerardo made her regular visit to TJ Nails, a place she's been going to for more than a decade, where they call her "Mama." But two weeks ago she claims she received a small cut on her finger. "A little open wound, here on the side of my finger," said Gerardo.A day later, her finger started swelling. Gerardo went to Urgent Care, where they put her on antibiotics.She went back to the nail salon, and she says they offered her 0."He told me, 'It's nothing. Just clean your hand and buy your medicine, and it will come off," said Gerardo. But it only got worse, and Gerardo had to go into surgery."Pretty excruciating to see," said Gerardo's son Victor. "I don't like to see my mom in pain."Victor was by his mom's side during the surgery and days following. "He cleaned as much as he could, to try and salvage the finger," said Victor. "He told me, he kept cutting and cutting the tissue around her finger until it bled, because that was good skin."Gerardo says a man named Bill was the technician who cut her nails that day. Employees at TJ Nails claim he no longer works at the salon and recently moved out of state.Bill said in a phone interview that he never cut Gerardo's nails and he knew her very well and did nothing wrong. Meantime, Gerardo is looking for answers and waiting to see if she will be able to keep her finger. "This is the only thing I ever liked doing to myself, my nails," said Gerardo. "But now, with this that happened to my hand, I never want to do this in my life."The family reported TJ Nails to the state.
