SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A winter storm warning was issued for San Diego County’s mountains as a cold storm hit the region Monday..The warning is in place from 8 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.“The agency says heavy snow and strong winds are expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the evening commute on Monday. Tree branches could fall as well,” forecasters said.Total snow accumulations of two to six inches are expected with localized amounts of 12 to 18 inches. The heaviest snow is expected to impact areas above 5,500 feet, however, some snow is expected down to 4,500 feet.Accompanying the snow are heavy winds of 20 to 40 miles per hour.RELATED: Check today's forecast in your area“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the National Weather Service advised.A high surf advisory also takes the place of a beach hazards statement as the storm approaches. The advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Wednesday for San Diego County coastal areas.Surf begins to build Sunday, peaking Monday afternoon through Tuesday, the agency says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An SUV reported stolen crashed as it fled from San Diego police, killing three of the vehicle’s occupants.At around 11 p.m. Tuesday, police were near the intersection of 24th Street and Island Avenue in Sherman Heights when they spotted a silver 2003 Honda Pilot SUV traveling without its headlights on, before learning that it was reported stolen a day earlier by Chula Vista Police.The driver ran a red light while traveling east on Market Street, according to SDPD. When officers tried to pull the SUV over, the driver sped away towards Interstate 15.Officers lost sight of the vehicle. Moments later, with a police helicopter tracking the SUV, the vehicle lost control and crashed into a pole on Market Street, near Raven Street, in the Mount Hope area.According to police, two of the four people inside were ejected from the vehicle and two others were trapped in the wreckage. Emergency responders took one person to the hospital with injuries considered life-threatening, but they are expected to survive. The driver and two other passengers were declared dead at the scene, police said.No other injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.The initial investigation revealed that none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts as the vehicle was traveling more than 100 mph just before the crash, police said. 1387

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego-based U.S. Coast Guard crew rescued a man having a heart attack on board a tanker off Point Loma Tuesday morning.The Chembulk New York, a 525-foot tanker vessel, radioed the Coast Guard for help Monday at 4:15 p.m. At the time, the ship was 370 miles southwest of San Diego, Coast Guard officials reported.A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter left San Diego at 10:45 p.m. to rendezvous with the ship, which changed course to facilitate the medical evacuation.At 1:30 a.m., the helicopter crew arrived and hoisted the man on board. The crew flew him to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla.The man was reported to be in stable condition, according to the Coast Guard. 708

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego State University study abroad student and a University of San Diego graduate student have both tested positive for the coronavirus, the universities announced Friday.The SDSU student was studying abroad in Italy and recently returned home to the United States. The student is self-isolating at his home outside of San Diego County, the university said in a release.They added that the student visited two off campus offices for a brief period of time, and did not attend any classes."Due to the student's limited contact with the campus, we consider that the risk to the greater SDSU campus community is low," said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer.A graduate student at the University of San Diego also tested positive for the virus, the university said Friday in a tweet. According to the county, a water contact closure was issued Saturday for Imperial Beach. The closure was extended north to include the Silver Strand. “Sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary as a result of recent rainfall,” the Department of Environmental Health said.
