On my list: Satellite radio, cable, a clothing subscription and a movie loyalty program.Next, look up each company’s website. You’ll usually find a variety of contact methods, including live chat, text messaging, email and a phone number.While you’re searching online, gather information about your current package and pricing, as well as any new promotions from your current company or competitors that can be used as leverage.Cut out what you don’t needSet aside a block of time — maybe an hour or so — and work your way through the list.My first call was to our satellite radio service provider. My husband and I have a SiriusXM subscription. But after months of spotty reception in our car, I decided it was time to cut the service completely.Instead, over the course of a 10-minute phone call, I asked to cancel, then I was met with a better offer. Before, we paid .63 per month. Now, we pay .06 a month for 12 months (for the same plan). Plus, they threw in a free month.Threatening to cancel a service can be a bargaining tactic. Here, it was the truth — I was fully ready and willing to cancel. And it got me a better price.Next? That clothing subscription. A five-minute online chat with athletic brand Fabletics resulted in me canceling my membership. Before, I paid .95 a month as an account credit, unless I logged into my account and shopped or skipped by the fifth day of the month.The customer service representative offered a store credit to stay, but I went ahead and canceled anyway.DowngradeBe patient. There’s a time commitment involved. Plus, things don’t always work out.I spent 45 minutes online chatting, then talking on the phone with DirecTV. But even after consulting with two representatives, my monthly payment remained around 0 before and after my interaction.I was told there weren’t any discounts or promotions currently available for my account. And since I didn’t want to downgrade my package (I’m not ready to give up those Lifetime movies on LMN or game shows on Game Show Network), I’ll have to wait for future offers.If you’re willing to change your TV lineup, review available channel packages online to find a slimmed-down option that works for you. Or call and talk to a representative.Ask for helpRenegotiating bills is perhaps more important now, especially for those who are dealing with financial impacts related to the coronavirus. As the pandemic began taking an economic toll in the spring, providers across a broad spectrum of industries stepped up to extend payment assistance and waive late fees for customers.I contacted some service providers to see how they’re continuing to help consumers who are struggling.Most telecommunications companies, such as Dish and Comcast, provided similar advice: If existing customers have questions or are interested in lower monthly payments, they should go online or call customer service.Contact companies proactively, and if you’ve been laid off or otherwise affected by the pandemic, be honest about your situation.Look for resources that don’t require any effort, too. I thought I might need to cancel or renegotiate my -a-year AMC Stubs Premiere movie theater loyalty account. But the company had already temporarily paused my account in light of movie theater closures.Renegotiating bills didn’t save me enough money to retire early. In a memo sent to state governors, the federal government says that states should be prepared to begin distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to the public this fall.The memo signed by CDC head Robert Redfield told governors that the federal government has contracted with the McKesson Corporation to assist in distributing the vaccine to local and state health departments, medical facilities, doctor officers, and other vaccine providers.In the letter, Redfield requested governors to waive any regulatory barriers that would prevent McKesson from operating distribution facilities. If you prefer donating your time, how do you give back when volunteer events are limited by the pandemic?Here’s a guide to prioritizing your donations, taking advantage of special tax deductions for 2020 giving and using your holiday spending to make a difference.Tax benefits of giving during the pandemicThis year, in addition to helping those in need, you may be eligible to receive added tax benefits for your donations.As part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, taxpayers who take the standard deduction are allowed an additional deduction of up to 0 for charitable donations made in cash. Previously, charitable contributions could only be deducted if taxpayers itemized.Taxpayers who itemize can deduct up to 100% of their adjusted gross income for cash donations (up from 60%) made in 2020.These incentives don’t apply to all contributions — only those made to qualifying public organizations, which the IRS defines as “those that are religious, charitable, educational, scientific or literary in purpose.” Contributions to donor-advised funds, nonoperating private foundations and support organizations don’t qualify for the deduction.The IRS website has a tool to look up tax-exempt organizations.Use your values to inform your givingChoosing which cause to support is deeply personal. If you can’t handle the heat, stay out of John Wood’s kitchen. The owner of 29 Diner has a big personality, but he might have a bigger heart.“We have the philosophy that we want to put the community first, always, but especially during the pandemic,” said Wood.While many restaurants have been trying to figure out how to serve takeout and keep the lights on, Wood and his team have been trying to figure out how to feed people in need.“We decided that we were going to turn our restaurant into a free food pantry and a free food kitchen,” said Wood.It started as a way to feed kids who wouldn’t be getting meals at schools anymore during the pandemic, but the 29 Diner team saw the need was greater.“We knew that we needed to do more than just feed the kids. So we decided to not only provide hot meals but we needed to open a community pantry as well,” said Wood.29 Diner has been a staple in Fairfax, Virginia, for a long time.“We love the service. It’s so friendly and being part of the community, it feels so natural,” said Melissa Schous, a customer who stopped in for lunch.Wood has been providing free meals and groceries to whoever needs them since the pandemic hit.“The diner became a seven-day-a-week, 12-hour-a-day free food pantry, free food kitchen, feeding thousands of meals daily. We had cars that wrapped around the diner feeding 60 to 80 families a day,” said Wood.The diner takes donations online, or in person with donation jars all around the diner. They use that money to buy the food they give away.While there wasn’t anyone coming in to grab food today, the diner converted their food truck into a mobile food pantry to deliver food throughout the community.Wood's willingness to help others in need is benefiting his business in other ways.And while Wood is willing to do what he takes to give his community a hand up, it’s having other benefits for his business.“Expanded our hours of operation here, we hired additional folks. So we completely reversed the trends of the pandemic of the impact into a small business, because we were taking care of our community,” said Wood.That’s right, 29 Diner is hiring, in this economy!Wood wouldn’t say he exact numbers, but said before the pandemic, he had enough cash to last a few months if business took a turn. Since his efforts to feed Fairfax, he’s seen that pile increase which he says he wants to use to keep feeding families.“We believe that if we touch you in the heart, if you believe in our community, you’ll want to come in and give us your money. You’re going to want to come in and patronize our business because of our goodwill to the community,” said Wood.And if you’re they’re for the good will, you might want to try the food too.“You walk in, they greet you like you’ve been there before and the food just feels like your aunt cooked it,” said Schous.Nothing like a hot meal to fill your belly, and maybe your heart too. 2916
