SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Monday, CVS pharmacists started vaccinating nursing home residents and staff in San Diego and across the state. CVS expects to give the vaccine to around 700,000 people across the state.“We've really tried to be careful. We've had no COVID-19 cases, thank the Lord, at our skilled nursing facilities,” Ellen Schmeding with San Diego’s St. Paul’s Senior Services told ABC10 News on Monday. Residents at its Banker’s Hill location start having access to the vaccine this Wednesday. “They've been around. They've seen polio and small pox. They know what a great gift it is to have the vaccine available right now,” she added.CVS Health District Leader Lisa Kalajian told ABC10 News on Monday, “We have 40,000 long term care facilities that opted to go with us for vaccinations nationwide and 15,000 of those are in California.” Over the next 12 weeks, she said that the company will begin with vaccinating residents and staff at nursing homes, followed by residents and staff at assisted living facilities.Kalajian said that the company can't provide the list of facilities in San Diego, where the county is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases. The latest numbers show there are 48 active outbreaks at those type of facilities. She said that the company plans to enter long term care facilities three times. Once for the initial vaccination, then for the booster shot and finally to cover anyone who was left behind.The goal, she told ABC10 News, is to eventually offer the shot to the general public at in-store locations, although that's not been finalized. “We are starting with long term care facilities but are contracted to move onto the general public. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On this holiday, some extra thanks for a Clairemont family, months after an expectant mother was placed on a ventilator from COVID-19."This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful to be here with my family," said Ashley Duque.That family includes Ashley, her husband Diego, their daughter Anna, 3, and the newest addition, three-month-old Lucas."He came out our miracle baby," said Ashley.The miracle emerged from a pandemic. In March, 17 weeks into her pregnancy, Ashley was hospitalized with coronavirus, before being placed on a ventilator for five days."It was very, very scary," said Ashley.She spoke to ABC 10News from her hospital bed while recovering. Ashley was discharged after more than two weeks, but she would be back for nine different surgeries from complications from the COVID-19 treatment.Most of the surgeries involved removing scar tissue in her throat caused by her time on the ventilator.Then in August, Ashley was back in the hospital, as she went into labor three weeks early."I was nervous and scared," said Ashley.Despite her COVID battle and her other health issues, Lucas Duque was born August 25, weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces. He was healthy."We’re just very blessed that nothing happened to him," said Ashley.On this Thanksgiving holiday, there is a mix of emotions. Ashley is still having issues with the scar tissue, but Ashley and Diego are feeling an overwhelming feeling of gratitude."In a flip of coin, anything can happen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person was shot Sunday outside of a College Area smoke shop, according to police.It wasn't immediately clear what led to the shooting, but San Diego Police confirmed that a 20-year-old man had been shot just before 5:30 p.m. in the 5900 block of El Cajon Blvd., outside of Aztec Smoke & Vape Shop.The victim was hit in the leg and chest and taken to a nearby hospital, but their condition was not clear.The area was closed by police for the investigation.10News is monitoring this breaking news. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Neighbors are expressing their collective frustration after a vandal tagged a new community mural in South Park."Pretty awful and disrespectful. A lot of time, energy and love into this piece," said Heather Johnson.At 30th and Juniper Street and 30th Street, the community mural sponsored by several neighborhood businesses was targeted by a vandal over the weekend."I think it's disgusting to be honest with you," said Brian Padgett.The phrase "#Neighborhood" was spray-painted over, replaced with the phrase "ETHNIC CLEANSING." At the bottom of the mural, the phrase "#Hipster Pacifism" was tagged in purple."Disheartening, frustrating and an act of cowardice," added Ezekiel Morphis.Neighbors believe the spray-painted messages are sounding off against the gentrification of South Park. The tagged wall is a part of a building which will soon be home to a non-profit restaurant benefiting local schools. It was once home to long-time coffeehouse priced out of the area almost two years ago."It happens in every neighborhood. As a city grows, there is change. This is not the way to handle it," said Johnson.Some paint was quickly put on the tagging, but the creators of the mural — which cost about ,000 — say it may cost another ,000 to repair. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person has been arrested Friday in connection with two threatening notes targeting La Jolla High School found off-campus.It's not clear whether the person was a student of the school.In a letter to parents Thursday, La Jolla High Principal Charles Podhorsky alerted the community of the notes that made mention to Oct. 31 and Dec. 10.RELATED: Point Loma Nazarene University classes canceled due to FBI investigation into possible threatPodhorsky alerted parents to the arrest Friday, and noted, "In an abundance of caution, we still plan to have additional officers on campus on these dates."It wasn't confirmed where the notes were found in the community, but students told 10News one of the notes were found at a nearby 7-Eleven location.Podhorsky also reminded parents to talk with their children regarding the notes and “If you see something, say something.”Any suspicious activity can be reported to either the Students Speak Out/Crime Stoppers hotline at 619-275-8240 or to San Diego Police at 619-531-2000. 1094
