INDIANAPOLIS -- Teona Wooldridge was overcome with joy and tears after receiving a ,000 scholarship from a former NBA legend Tuesday night.Wooldridge is a junior at the Charles Tindley Accelerated School in Indianapolis. She had been looking for scholarships and never expected it would happen during a lecture. At the Steward Speaker Series former Los Angeles Lakers great Earvin Magic Johnson randomly chose Wooldridge for the scholarship.  "I was just amazed," Wooldridge said. "For me, it was just a blessing from God."Her parents are youth ministers and teachers with IPS. They said they were grateful for Johnson's generosity."First I thought I was hearing things," Wooldridge's father said. "At first I heard ,000, then ,000 for four years. My heart just dropped. It’s the news glioblastoma patients in St. Lucie County feared they’d hear: There are more cases than they knew of.This week Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida reported on 11 glioblastoma cases in the Fort Pierce-area, discovered through word of mouth from the patients and their families.For two days, more people wrote to WPTV, telling us about other people they know with the disease, which affects just 13,000 people each year in the U.S.When WPTV broadened the focus area to include all of St. Lucie County, our number now increased to roughly 30 cases over the last five years. Several more cases date with the few years previous to that.The Florida Department of Health confirms it is monitoring their concerns and considering how to move forward.The Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County has also met with some of the Glioblastoma patients and families.Patients like Kevin Perry say they never anything about the disease.“You hear about cancer all the time, but Glioblastoma? No,” Perry said.He was diagnosed in 2016 shortly after he had a seizure.“Some days you feel like you’re brand new. Other days you feel like its all over you,” Perry said.Perry’s wife, Ronna, is among the now dozens of local families wanting to know if their cases warrant a bigger investigation.I would like to know if there’s something going on. Or, is it just getting more prevalent.”Thursday, when WPTV’s glioblastoma count was around 13, we spoke with Dr. Chaim Colen, a neurosurgeon who has treated some of the local patients.“It’s definitely high. Is that a coincidence? It’s that time, when stores offer up their best deals on the hottest items. Some of the advertised deals can even cause customers to stand in lines for hours and even camp out the night before the items go on sale. But this could be a big waste of time.“Don’t buy something just because it’s on sale,” says Kevin Brasler, the executive editor of the consumer watch dog group Consumer’s Checkbook.Brasler tracked sales and deals at 19 major retailers for nearly a year to find out which companies are telling the truth when advertising their sales.  "Most of these stores offering big ticket items are just offering the same deal they did before and the same deal they offered the next week,” says Brasler of his findings. “It wasn't a special price."  The worst offenders range from big box stores to high-end retailers. And with Black Friday around the corner, Brasler warns consumers to be cautious of those doorbuster deals, especially those early morning sales urging you to get up to get amazing deals on hot items before they go.   "There's for sure no reason to get excited about most of the items they are selling on Black Friday, because we found the sales they are offering then are just about the same as they otherwise are," he says.  Then there are those buy one and get one half-off sales. Brasler says these, too, are often a sham.  "These sales they just call them different sales; it's really rare that they have a super good price that you better grab right then and there otherwise it will go away forever,” Brasler says.  That's because the less expensive item is usually the one that gets the half-off deal. In just the latest reminder of the dangers of pollution in our oceans, a dead whale in Indonesia has been found with 13.2 pounds (six kilograms) of plastic waste in its stomach.The 31.17-foot sperm whale was found near Kapota Island in Wakatobi National Park, southeast of Sulawesi.Park officials found bags, plastic bottles, sandals and 115 plastic cups in the whale's stomach, as well as a sack containing more than 1,000 pieces of string."Although we have not been able to deduce the cause of death, the facts that we see are truly awful," said Dwi Suprapti, marine species conservation coordinator at WWF-Indonesia, in a statement to CNN.The macabre discovery was made in an area popular with tourists and comes at a time of increasing concern over the impact of plastic pollution on marine life.In June, a short-fin male pilot whale died in southern Thailand and was later found to have ingested more than 17 pounds of plastic bags and packaging.During an autopsy, veterinarians found more than 80 plastic bags in the whale's stomach.A 2015 report by Ocean Conservancy and the McKinsey Center for Business and Environment found that over 50% of the plastic leaking into world oceans comes from China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, suggesting that the two whales died in dangerous waters for marine life.The report claims that a 65% reduction in plastic waste leakage in those five countries would lead to a 45% reduction globally.Without intervention, the amount of plastic cluttering the Earth's oceans will triple within a decade, according to a recent study by the UK government.However, there is evidence that lawmakers are taking notice of the threat, as the European Parliament voted to ban single-use plastics in October.The proposal covers items such as straws, cotton swabs and cutlery, in addition to obliging EU states to recycle 90% of plastic bottles by 2025.In October, the dangers of plastic were underlined when a decades-old bottle washed up almost intact on a UK beach.The plastic bottle of dishwashing liquid was at least 47 years old, with its branding still clearly visible.The-CNN-Wire 2140
