OMAHA, Nebraska — Just before 5 p.m local time Monday, Omaha Police were called to the scene of a traffic incident involving a school bus near an intersection in North Omaha. Police later confirmed the boy, 8-year-old Haji Mohamed of Omaha, had died. According to a report from OPD received Monday night, "the investigation revealed that a Student Transportation of America school bus had come to a stop along Sprague Street just east of 22nd Street at a designated student drop off location."After several students disembarked the bus, the bus driver continued her route westbound on Sprague Street," the report states. "As the bus was traveling between 22nd Street and 23rd Street, an 8-year old male child who had just disembarked the bus, attempted to run across Sprague Street from north to south. As soon as the child entered the roadway, he was struck by the bus."The boy was transported by emergency personnel to Nebraska Medicine in extremely critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the boy was pronounced dead, the OPD release states.  Early OPD reports indicated the elementary-aged boy was transported with "extremely critical injuries" to Nebraska Medicine, said Sgt. Chuck Casey of the OPD incident unit, who gave an update near the scene. Omaha Public Schools later confirmed in a statement that the injured boy is a second-grader from Springville?Elementary School, located near 60th and Girard streets, about five miles northwest of the incident.The boy's family was with him at the hospital, Casey said.Early reports indicated the boy was struck by the front of the bus — the only vehicle involved in the incident — but the scene will be under investigation for some time, he said."At this time, Omaha Public Schools administrators, Student Transportation of America and OPS Student Transportation are cooperating with the Omaha Police Department as they investigate the incident," according to a statement from OPS early Monday evening. "Administrators are also supporting and working with the family of the student."Casey said initial reports were that the boy was a passenger on the bus. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Oceanside Police are asking the public for help finding a missing, at-risk woman who disappeared early Friday following a distressing phone call.Police said Yolanda Michelle Combs, 42, was last heard by her daughter over the phone Friday morning, before her phone suddenly disconnected. Combs' daughter said her mom sounded like she was in distress and needed help. No one has been able to reach Combs since, police said.She is described as a white female, standing 5-foot-2, and weighing about 140 pounds. She has shoulder-length red hair and hazel eyes. On Friday morning, a truck pulled up outside Heim Elementary School in Williamsville to collect boxes full of shoes for the Nicaragua Mission Project.The project has been collecting supplies for people in Nicaragua for more than a decade. Based in East Amherst, it works with volunteers from local schools and churches to fill boxes with donations and send them from New York to Nicaragua.Heim Elementary School has been working with the project for years, and one fourth grader has been a part of the project for most of his life. Luke Avery started collecting shoes in kindergarten. He even goes to other schools and daycares to pick up donations. Luke has collected more than 3,000 pairs of shoes over the years. He was there again Friday morning to donate more."I feel like other kids can go for school because of kids at my school," Luke said."This is not from me, this is from other children," the project's organizer, Ann Marie Zon said. "And they always feel another kid feeling for them is more special than that shoes. (AP) — A federal judge has stopped the 2020 census from finishing at the end of September and ordered the once-a-decade head count of every U.S. resident extended for another month through the end of October. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh said in her ruling late Thursday that a shortened schedule would likely produce inaccurate results. A coalition of civil rights groups and local governments had sued the Census Bureau in an effort to prevent the 2020 census from stopping at the end of the month. They said the shortened schedule would undercount residents in minority and hard-to-count communities.Koh said inaccuracies produced from a shortened schedule would affect the distribution of federal funding and political representation. The census is used to determine how .5 trillion in federal spending is distributed each year and how many congressional seats each state gets.Government attorneys had argued that the census must finish by the end of September to meet a Dec. 31 deadline for turning over numbers used for deciding how many congressional seats each state gets.Koh’s preliminary injunction suspends that end-of-the-year deadline, too.
