BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is "trying its best" to look for families for orphans in the Qinghai quake zone while trying to give them special care, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs."Among all people in the quake-hit areas, children whose parents were killed during the quake are in the most difficult situation and need special care," said an unnamed official with the ministry Friday.Government organizations and social groups would work together to care for the orphans.The ministry said it would seek adoptions for all orphans in the quake zone as soon as possible, and would "fully respect" the children's preferences and the traditions and habits of ethnic children.Six children were reportedly injured in the quake when a four-story orphan school collapsed. A total of 220 students are living in tents.The total number of orphans in the quake zone is not available.According to the ministry, social welfare organizations in Xining, capital of northwest China's Qinghai Province, have set aside more than 300 beds for orphans and children whose parents or other family members have not been contactable since a 7.1-magnitude quake hit Yushu, Qinghai, on April 14.The ministry also planned to mobilize help from other regions if Qinghai had difficulty settling the orphans.Previous reports said SOS Children's Villages in Chengdu, Urumqi, Beijing and Tianjin would contact with the civil affairs department in Yushu and prepare for the arrival of orphans.The central government and Qinghai authorities would jointly provide each orphan with a monthly financial support of 1,000 yuan (146 U.S. dollars) for three months from April.In addition, figures from the ministry show that a total of 56,000 tents had reached the quake zone as of Friday evening, along with 117,000 coats and 208,000 quilts among other daily necessities and relief materials.The quake in Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu has left 2,187 people dead and 80 missing. Among the 12,135 injured, 1,434 were in serious condition.

SANAA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese medical mission arrived Sunday in the southern Yemeni province of Aden as part of a cooperation agreement between the two countries, state-run Saba news agency reported.The 45-strong mission will provide medical services to residents of the southern provinces of Aden, Lahij, Abyan and Hadramout, according to the report.The mission includes neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, thoracic surgeons, pediatric surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists and a number of administrative staff, Jamal Khadabish, director of the Aden-based al-Jomhoriya hospital, was quoted by Saba as saying.The mandate of the Chinese mission would last for one year in accordance with a protocol of health cooperation between Yemen and China, Khadabish noted.

ASTANA, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Defense ministers of China and Kazakhstan agreed Friday to upgrade cooperation of the two militaries to a new level.At a meeting with his Kazakh counterpart, Adilbek Dzhaksybekov, visiting Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie recalled the smooth growth of the bilateral cooperative relationship since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Kazakhstan, including frequent top-level exchanges, deepening of political trust, and expansion of cooperation in all aspects.He recalled frequent meetings between Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Kazakh counterpart, Nursultan Nazarbayev. The two leaders held in-depth discussions on how to further bilateral strategic partnership, thus continuously adding new momentum and providing guidance to the development of bilateral ties.Liang said military-to-military relationship is a key part of overall bilateral relations. Supported by leaders of both nations, relations between the two militaries have been growing steadily while leaders of both militaries have maintained frequent contacts on bilateral and multilateral occasions. FUZHOU, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan has called for concrete measures to promote the construction of the economic zone on the western side of the Taiwan Strait.Wang made the remarks during his two-day inspection tour to the southeastern Fujian Province that ended Friday.Wang also asked local departments of commerce, customs, quality inspection, finance and tourism to make efforts to support the construction of the economic zone.During his visit to Pingtan Island, the fifth largest island in China, Wang inspected a bridge under construction that will connect the island with the mainland, as well as industrial development and the tourism industry on the island.Wang also visited the Wuyi Mountain and some tourist attractions in Fuzhou city, and urged a sound development of local tourism industry.
