SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A record 621 people died of drug overdoses in San Francisco so far this year, a staggering number that far outpaces the 173 deaths from COVID-19 the city has seen thus far. That's according to a San Francisco Chronicle report, which says the crisis fueled by the powerful painkiller fentanyl could have been far worse if it wasn’t for the nearly 3,000 times Narcan was used this year to reverse an overdose. The newspaper says the crisis is deepening because fentanyl flooded the city’s drug supply. Moreover, the pandemic has disrupted city services and left many people to use drugs alone. 620

SAN FRANCISCO — A California appeals court has upheld an order requiring Uber and Lyft to treat their California drivers as employees instead of independent contractors, less than two weeks before voters will be asked to exempt the ride-hailing giants from the state’s gig economy law. The two companies have more than 400,000 drivers in California alone. Treating Uber and Lyft drivers as employees would guarantee benefits such as overtime and sick leave.Uber and Lyft had appealed an August ruling by a San Francisco judge, but the appellate ruling found "no legal error" and allowed the earlier ruling to stand. The legal fight started after state lawmakers passed a law that says companies can classify workers as contractors only if they perform work "outside the usual course" of the company's business. Thursday's decision won’t have any immediate impact because it doesn’t take effect for at least 30 days, well after the Nov. 3 vote on Proposition 22.Uber and Lyft, along with DoorDash, have heavily bankrolled the ballot measure.Proposition 22 on the California ballot this fall asks voters to create a special designation for drivers of app-based companies to be excluded from the new state law. 1216

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A coded letter mailed to a San Francisco newspaper by the Zodiac serial killer in 1969 has been deciphered by a team of amateur sleuths from the United States, Australia and Belgium.The San Francisco Chronicle reports Friday the cipher is one of many sent by a killer who referred to himself as Zodiac in letters sent to detectives and the media.According to code-breaking expert David Oranchak, the cipher's text includes: "I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise."The Zodiac terrorized Northern California communities and killed five people in the Bay Area in 1968 and 1969. 637

SAN DIEGO — A YouTube video shows a community college police officer drawing his gun on a San Diego man carrying a camera Wednesday.The video shows the Mesa College police officer getting out of his car and asking Chris, the man with two cameras, what he was filming.Chris, who did not want to provide his last name, refused to put down the GoPro camera. Within seconds, the officer took his weapon out of the holster. The officer did not put his gun back in the holster until a second officer arrived.Chris is the founder of California Citizens Watch, a group that audits government entities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Two families are devastated after their pets go missing. After days of searching, they find out their dogs were adopted from local shelters.“I would give anything to have him back,” says Valeria Mega?a. The Spring Valley family’s poodle mix, named Cookie, has been missing since Halloween. “Its been really hard. Life is not the same without him.”After searching day and night, the family got word cookie was placed at the El Cajon Animal Shelter. When Mega?a checked, she was told Cookie had already been adopted.A similar situation happened to a family in City Heights. Nora Avila says she was out of town when her dog Mocha, who was staying with a neighbor, got out. By the time she made it to the San Diego Humane Society, he had already been adopted.“We pleaded with them to let the family know… that we loved him. He was never abandoned,” says Avila.The El Cajon Animal Shelter and the San Diego Humane Society have holding periods four days for animals with no identification.Cookie and Mocha were not microchipped. “One in three pets in their lifetime is missing at some point, that’s why for us again, it is so important that people microchip their pets,” says Jennifer Brehler, with the San Diego Humane Society.Both shelters tell 10News they have notified the adopters but they have decided to not return the animals.The families are hoping they will have a change of heart.
