SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local officials say a record number of San Diegans died of meth last year.According to the county's 2020 Meth Report Card, 546 San Diegans died from meth in 2019, 63 more than the previous record of 483 set in 2018.The County Medical Examiner's Office says people most impacted by meth are those 45 years of age or older, which represented 319 of the meth-related deaths. The ME says people in this age range tend to have chronic cardiovascular disease, which may have been from long-term meth use."There’s no sugarcoating it: Meth is destroying lives and families at a record pace here in San Diego County," said County Supervisor Dianne Jacob. "Local law enforcement and treatment services are on the front lines battling this scourge, but clearly we need to do even more as a region."While San Diego was once considered the "Meth Capital of the World," little is made locally today and most of it is being transported into the county from Mexico, according to the report. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer Saturday detailed plans to redevelop the Sports Arena site, officially announcing what developers will tackle the project.According to Faulconer, the plan incorporates a mix of entertainment, housing, and parks."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said. "A new arena has always been a priority of mine, and it's the right time."Brookfield Housing and ASM Global were chosen to construct the new arena and thousands of housing units, beating out the other finalist, Toll Brothers Housing.The redevelopment area encompasses roughly 48 acres in the Midway-Pacific Highway Community area. At the press conference, representatives from the Gulls and the Seals spoke, saying they're excited for their teams to play in the new space. More than 4,000 members of OPEIU Local 30 supported the action, a union spokesperson said. Workers say they want to “protect middle-class jobs with wages and benefits that can support families.” Hundreds of positions would be affected, including x-ray, pharmacy, and surgical technicians, phlebotomists, optometrists, and housekeepers. “We believe the only way to ensure our patients get the best care is to take this step,” said Robert Sparrow, an x-ray technician. “Our goal is to get Kaiser to stop committing unfair labor practices and get back on track as the best place to work and get care. There is no reason for Kaiser to let a strike happen when it has the resources to invest in patients, communities and workers.” Picket lines will be established at Kaiser Permanente hospitals, medical office buildings, and other facilities in six states and Washington, D.C.
