SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Days after revealing its move to downtown San Diego's Petco Park, KAABOO announced it's under new ownership.KAABOO's new owner, Virgin Fest, the music festival arm of The Virgin Group, will not change the festival's brand of live music, comedy, art, and culinary experiences, KAABOO said in a release.While Virgin Fest Founder and CEO Jason Felts has acquired all of the festival's assets, KAABOO San Diego itself will also not be rebranded. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Another heat wave in the forecast could leave Californians in the dark this weekend. San Diego Gas and Electric is preparing for a hot weekend as high temps are expected to cause more strain on the power grid.Energy officials are hoping to avoid a repeat of last month when rolling blackouts swept through the state for the first time in 11 years.The California Independent System Operator, or CAISO, was forced to order blackouts in response to high demand.“For the grid to operate, demand on the grid needs to be matched evenly with supply,” said Helen Gao with SDG&E.Ahead of the heat this weekend, SDG&E meteorologists are closely monitoring conditions.At this point, CAISO says they haven’t told SDG&E to prepare for rotating outages over the weekend. CAISO says it plans to issue a Flex Alert, which it says is a voluntary call for conservation.CAISO said the recent rotating outages were the result of a number of factors, including generation units being out of service, reduction of the amount of energy California was able to import from other states, and a sudden drop in wind energy.If CAISO issues a flex alert, the power company will activate their demand response programs. It encourages customers to cut back on energy use to reduce strain on the grid. Outages would only be ordered by CAISO as a last resort. On Tuesday, the State Water Resource Control Board took action to prevent more outages in the future. They’re now along four gas power plants to continue operations past 2020. They were set to stop production as California transitions to cleaner energy sources. The extended deadline is expected to ease the strain on current systems while new energy and storage resources are being built.If an outage is planned for a neighborhood, SDG&E says they try to give all customers a heads up before the lights go out.How these rolling outages workRolling outages are a method that CA ISO uses to take the load off of California's power grid. When the state says the grid is under too much stress, each utility in the state has a percentage of electricity that needs to be taken off of the grid to meet whatever wattage CA ISO is aiming for, according to SDG&E. That amount that a utility will be asked to cut during these rolling blackouts is approved with CA ISO regulators every year.SDG&E determines which neighborhoods will be impacted by creating a list of blocks. Each of those blocks accounts for about 25 megawatts of electricity. Once CA ISO tells SDG&E how much power it needs to cut, SDG&E goes down that list from the top, de-energizing blocks until it is told to stop.The next day, the company picks up where it left off on the list, so that the same neighborhoods aren't affected every night. Once SDG&E goes through its entire list, it starts at the top again.Outages can last up to an hour but can also be relatively quick. Saturday, the first block de-energized lasted for about 17 minutes, according to the company.What you can do to helpTo avoid rolling blackouts, officials say the best way is to take energy conservation seriously. Because these outages are issued by the state, conservation is needed by all Californians in these instances.Officials recommend setting the thermostat at 78 degrees, turning off unnecessary lights and electronics, and using appliances before 3 p.m. to help save power.During power shutoffs, SDG&E suggests customers turn off air conditioners, keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed, and reduce their water use due to the need for electricity to pump and process water. For electric vehicle owners, charging should be delayed if possible until after the emergency shutoffs, SDG&E said.SDG&E offers more safety tips to keep in mind during an outage here. 3805

Gavin Newsom is facing a possible recall election as the nation's most populous state struggles to emerge from the coronavirus crisis.Organizers for "Recall Gavin 2020" say they have collected around 800,000 signatures so far. That's more than half of the nearly 1.5 million petition signatures needed to place the recall on the ballot.But state records show just under 500,000 have been turned in so far; of those, 46,756 are from San Diego County.Recall adviser Randy Economy says interest is higher since it was revealed Newsom dined with friends at an opulent restaurant while telling state residents to stay home and not socialize."He's done this to himself," Economy says, pointing out that many business owners are upset at how Newsom has handled the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing shutdowns."More people have suffered who are the heart and soul of California and the backbone of our economy, and we basically have had it."Economy says his group does not plan to hire professional signature gatherers. Instead, they're relying on a network of 30,000 volunteers across the state. They plan to use social media and their website to gain momentum."People have paying attention," he says, "They're at home, they don't have much to do, they're always on social media..."You can download the petition. You can sign it in your home. You can have your family member sign it. You can have your neighbor sign it. It's just just real simple."But a grassroots movement may not be enough. Newsom still has high approval ratings, and won his recent election by the largest margin in California history.UC San Diego Political Science Department Chair Thad Kousser says the 2003 recall of Gov. Gray Davis provides a good comparison.In that recall, the only successful recall of a governor in California history, supports got a huge financial boost from Darrell Issa and also had a big-name challenger in Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger.Kousser says this recall effort has neither."Without the money that it takes to set in place the machinery of direct democracy in California, we're not going to see a recall come to fruition," he says.Newsom hasn't spoken publicly about the recall, but his office released a statement in June. It was identical to a statement he released in 2019 when facing a different recall election.In it, Newsom says the people behind the recall want to "bring Washington's broken government to California.""The last thing California needs is another wasteful special election, supported by those who demonize California's people and attack California's values," it says.When 10News presented that statement to Economy, he scoffed, adding "This man has the audacity to be able to lecture us on on politics and, and how he has been able to conduct himself behind closed doors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Custom churros are the latest foodie find on Kearny Mesa's bustling Convoy Street culinary scene.Churreria is taking the classic dessert treat and adding their own twist. The churro stop gives customers the chance to customize their churro with toppings like bacon, coconut, and even fruity pebbles. Better yet, churros are made right before customers' eyes.Nicholas Tran, owner of Churreria, said the idea for a churro shop developed after a trip by the border.RELATED: 10 must-eat restaurants on San Diego's Convoy Street"We saw this kiosk and they were having these churros from this little stand. And I was 'Oh my god. That's a fantastic idea,'" Tran said. "Everyone loves churros!"Tran's wife and his business partner embarked to Spain to develop how they would make their churros. The main difference, Tran, said is the basic ingredients.Traditional North American churros contain egg, milk, and butter. Spanish churros, though, are made from just flour, water, salt, and oil."It's vegan and vegetarian. It's good for people who are lactose intolerant or who have a dairy intolerance or with eggs," Tran. "This happens to be a healthy churro. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Court services are being drastically reduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which affects both civil and criminal proceedings. The closure will last until April 3rd.“My fear is that we’re going to have situations where individuals are going to stay in custody longer than what the law permits,” said David P. Shapiro, a criminal defense attorney. “What happens to the individuals who are in custody who have a future court date?”By law, you should have your first court appearance within 48 hours after your arrest. That excludes weekends and holidays, according to a spokesperson with the District Attorney’s Office.“We are in constant meetings with the court and the Public Defender and the Sheriff, our law enforcement partners,” said District Attorney Summer Stephan.Stephan said they have dealt with closures, such as during our past major wildfires. They are working on a system to review criminal cases to see who is suitable for community release.“This is an evolving process, but what we’re trying to do is to maintain due process in the time of crisis,” Stephan said.A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told 10News they are “working with the District Attorney’s Office and evaluating the impact” the court closures might have.“I was personally hoping they would have an emergency department available through all this just for arraignments, just for in-custody arraignments. Then we can at least address individuals who have been arrested,” Shapiro said.The court will still be available for restraining orders, emergency conservatorship, and search warrants.
