Oklahoma and Kentucky teachers are walking off the job Monday and holding rallies in their state capitols to pressure lawmakers.Inspired by the West Virginia strike in which teachers demanded and got a pay raise from state leaders, a wave of other states including Oklahoma, Kentucky and Arizona are taking similar action. Educators are organizing and publicly pressuring state lawmakers over issues like education funding, teacher salaries and pension reform.Teachers in Oklahoma are rallying for more education funding and salaries, and those in Kentucky will be marching over a controversial pension bill and the state budget. 637

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- The mother of one of the 15 Marines injured in a fiery training accident at Camp Pendleton said she panicked when she learned her son was one of the wounded.RELATED: Officials: 15 Marines injured in Camp Pendleton training accident“It made my heart hurt to see him for sure, you know, with his face all burnet and knowing how bad burns hurt,” said J.R. Koontz, mother of Marine Samuel Koontz.Fifteen members of Charlie Company with the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine 3rd Amphibious Assault Battalion were hurt when the AAV they were in exploded during a training exercise on land.RELATED: Report indicates Camp Pendleton fire caused by gas lineA photo posted to social media shows an AAV in a ditch engulfed in flames.“He’s burnt on his face, and his ear and his hand. And he’s got a few abrasions here and there,” J.R. Koontz said of her son, who was released from the hospital. “He seems to be healing pretty well."J.R. Koontz said she flew to San Diego the morning after the accident and visited her son at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.“It was really comforting because there was like eight Marines there in uniform. They stood there all night. They never leave him alone,” she said.Samuel Koontz posted on Facebook he has second and third-degree burns to his face but won’t have permanent scars. He wrote the vehicle, also called a Track, “Exploded and the track caught fire, me and my squad exited out multiple ways some being injured more than others. Me and some of my squad mates got out and went back to pull the rest of our brothers out that couldn’t do it for themselves for various reasons.”He also asks people to pray for the Marines still hospitalized and some badly injured.“it’s just kind of a traumatic thing I think when you go through something like that,” J.R. Koontz said. “I believe they put all the guys that were hurt in the accident in the wounded warrior battalion so that gives them time to go over what happened."The Marine Corps is not paying the flights and hotel stays for the families visiting the injured Marines. The Newport Beach 1st Marines 1st Battalion Foundation is picking up those bills to help the families.“They paid for our hotel when we were up there and our flight to get back,” she said on the phone from her home in Washington state. “That was really unexpected and really, really nice.”If you would like to donate, the Foundation asks you do so on their website.  2486

Now we know the explosions could strike anyone. The latest bombing in the Texas capital was detonated by a tripwire along a residential street, police say.The Sunday night blast was the fourth explosion in less than a month to terrify the nearly 1 million residents of Austin. Here's what we know about the Austin bombings, and the questions that remain unanswered: 376

OCEANSIDE, Calif., (KGTV) -- While many of San Diego County's beaches and parks are now off-limits due to the Coronavirus, Oceanside remains open. But some residents fear that a beach and golf course soft-closures only encourage people to ignore the stay-at-home order. Unlike the taped up beaches in San Diego, Del Mar, Solana Beach, and Encinitas, Thursday evening, Oceanside decided on a soft-closure. The parking lots, Pier, picnic areas, and playgrounds are closed. But the beaches remain open. "We figured, as long as we can encourage people and enforce that social distancing, we would be able to keep those recreational opportunities available," Samuel Liston with the City of Oceanside said. One person taking advantage of Oceanside's open beach was surfer, Oliver Dillard of Bay Park. Earlier, he was at Pacific Beach but was told by a police officer to leave."I'm just in the moment. Being here now," Dillard said. But not everyone is thrilled. "My reaction to them keeping open the beaches in even a soft way is horror," Oceanside resident, Frances Pope said. Pope suffers from a rare Autoimmune Disorder. She lives in a senior community in Oceanside. She says if her local beach is the only one that is open, people will flock to it, and you can forget about social distancing. "We're going to have a swarm of people, and it's not just Oceanside that is going to be hit by that," Pope said. "They're going to go back to their homes, inland or down south, and they will infect their families."It is not only beaches. Oceanside's City-run golf courses are also one of the last ones to remain open. According to the Pro-shop, golfers must walk on the course. No golf carts will be rented unless a person has a disability placard from the DMV.Still, Pope says this "halfway measure" is not enough. She wants everyone to take the virus seriously and stay home. "Every single person that can stop one trip out helps to keep everyone else safe," Pope said. The city says in regards to the beaches, they have lifeguards on duty. And they will keep a close eye. "We are constantly reevaluating these processes. Every day, multiple times a day, and if there are problems, we will have to do more," Liston said. 2222

Oceanside may convert two of its elected city positions into City Council appointed ones, leading to concerns that the city is taking key decisions away from voters. The Oceanside City Council will decide Wednesday whether it should have the authority to appoint the City Clerk and City Treasurer. The city says the positions have become “significantly more complex” due to state laws and regulations. “Both positions perform critical City functions, and they require specialized education and experience to property discharge their many duties that likely cannot be properly achieved (or guaranteed) via an elected position.” The City Treasurer position has been a controversial one in Oceanside. In 2016, incumbent Gary Ernst died just weeks before the election, leaving Oceanside resident Nadine Scott as the lone living person on the ballot. However, multiple City Council members campaigned on Ernst’s behalf because they said Scott wasn’t qualified. Ernst won, clearing the way for the council to appoint Rafe Edward Trickey Jr. Scott said Monday she was troubled by the decision before the council. Current treasurer Victor Roy defeated Tricket Jr. in the 2018 election, and currently holds the office. City Clerk Zeb Navarro was recently appointed after Zack Beck stepped down to take a position in Escondido. Oceanside Mayor Peter Weiss said the jobs are part time and pay about ,000 a year. However, that would likely be increased if it became an appointed position in order to attract a more qualified candidate. 1535
